I think the NRL involvement in the future of the ESL is to poach as many top players from that comp as possible , thus trying to fix the very apparent shortfall of 20 sides
Why would they want that , when it’s clear as day the new money is in international football ?
The nrl wants SL because it expands the nrl brand , gives it a footprint into Europe , and opens up new pathways for revenue .
A strong NRL Europe means next time at the negotiating table the options for diversifying revenue become exponential.
The nrl has maximised Australia . Hobart and Adelaide are the last 2 Aus cities , and no one gives a shit about nrl in Hobart , nor does the nrl care about Hobart , and Adelaide could be argued , but not more than things like a second nz team and a Ipswich corridor Brisbane team. Or even the crazy idea of a Hawaii team .
The players to fill out the nrl ,will come from Europe . But not the SL. As the nrl gains traction players will be tempted to test themselves in the “real” premier rugby competition in the world .
As it stands NRL is popular and quietly known as this , but there’s no marketing in Europe , so therefore there’s no market place share . And therefore no spot in the European zeitgeist . Buy SL, change the name , get a better broadcast deal , more interest from sponsors and investors , promote the hell out of it … and now people in France and Italy and Ireland are talking about it .so when a gun Irish or French fly half comes off contract it will be “what about the nrl … nah not the one in England the real one in Aus” .
South Africa as well . Especially with Perth .
The nrl doesn’t want to cannibalise SL. It wants to eat into rugby . And in some places like France , well especially France , return RL to its rightful place at the top.
Not sure many people know this , but English aristocracy during ww2 petitioned Hittler to outlaw RL , when they took over France , because of the rising power of RL in England , and a strong French league would be disastrous for English rugby .
Unbelievable but 💯 true story.
