Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Fullback options for tigers should go roughly in this order

Lolohea
Hopoate (could also play centre)
Dylan Edwards

No need to go for a Dugan or hayne.

Add in Milne who I've been told has actually signed on and the back line suddenly has some pace and skill.

Need one more prop. Someone like Mose masoe is a value buy and 2 edge back towers. I'd be looking at CHN from Penrith and Aiden guerra.

5/8 is tricky. Personally I'd go Tyrone Roberts. But would seriously have a crack at elgy or Shaun Johnson. Outside of that I'd get a stop gap solution for 2018 ie benji. And look to lock up Cleary for 2019.

What about Gagai for fullback? Are we any chance of getting him?

We have $3,000,000 to use now that we were previously offering for Moses, Woods and Tedesco and the savings we made on Brooks' reduced contract.

Use it wisely:

Dugan - $1,000,000
Johnson - $1,200,000
Widdop - $900,000
Matulino - $600,000
Folau - $1,200,000
Packer - $600,000
Cronk - $1,000,000
Watson - $400,000
Milne - $300,000

I would go with:

Johnson, Watson, Matulino, Milne and Packer

Matualino signed for 475k a season I believe. A $150k per season pay rise from warriors. Would pick packer up for cheaper than matualino. Don't forget he's on close to a minimum wage at dragons.

So we have signed Matulino?

Yeah I posted it Tuesday. It's in the COP.

Warriors just bluffing then?

Not sure. I'm sure picture will now become clearer in the next few weeks. As someone who worked here previously
I'd be interested to see where they place their value on players. If the matulino signing is indeed true then that's a good start.

Said it 100 times, losing woods is really not a big deal.
His worth 600k max. Bullet dodged. Trust me.

Milne will be on 180k, Packer 275k…600k for Packer lol

Dunno probably just manager talk. Heard he signed the deal Tuesday just gone so still have to get through the next 2 weeks I guess.

Can we have a moratorium on the term 'moneyball' for this forum, as it's clear no one knows what it means or the origins.

We're going to be linked to everyone under the sun between now and round 1 2018\. Old mate Ali is going to have a field day.

And if and I mean it's a big if that the Tigers try and make a signing statement they might use the Tedesco money on Jarryd Hayne and before anyone asks… yes, his value is actually worth in excess of 1.1 million.

He's shown nothing on his return to NRL to make me think he'll ever get near his pre-NFL form. We also don't need an ego like that around the club.

Well there's Hayne,Dugan,Lolohea. You can't replace Tedesco with Tedesco,I'd happily take any of these 3

Dugan would be my last choice.

I'd try lolohea and hoppa first then edwards.

But if they want to make a statement then Dugan or hayne would be that middle finger salute to Tedesco leaving

I don't want a middle finger. I want Edwards and a Marquee 5/8.

We need to forget Ted/Woods/Moses were ever here and build a tough side. Once we make the finals the rest will sort itself out.

I hope the Eels, Dogs and Chooks don't see another finals series for the next 10 years.

Well what positions are we still short on for 2018?

Fullback - Yep, we need one
Wing - Nofo on one wing, we need another, preferably speedy/tall
Centre - Suli and hopefully Milne
Five eighth - Yep, we need one
Halfback - Brooks
Prop - Matulino, re-sign Ava, Sue as a bench player, need to buy another though
Backrow - Aloiai, Lawrence, McQueen, Taylor. Still need another option here I feel. I'd look at re-signing Idris, he's starting to show potential but isn't in a position where he's playing rep football and can command massive dollars.

If all appears true and there's money to spend, this is what I would go with - it's not all doom and gloom.

Losing Teddy is heartbreaking, however the money freed up will make us a better TEAM across the park without so much money invested in single individuals. The saddest part is the money offered to these players should be reserved for players who can break a game, these 4 haven't collectively delivered, therefore dispersing that cash across a team is smart management IMO.

It's also important to remember that a lot of cubs will be in trouble next year due to the NRL advising of a lower salary cap then expected - players will likely be moved to create space where possible and will allow for cheaper pickups. The Tigers seem to have anticipated this better than others and not overcapitalised:

1\. Connor Watson (played fullback for Wyong over the weekend and scored 2 tries - will only be a utility now at the Roosters with Tedesco certain for fullback. Livewire of a player and future gun.)
2\. David Nofoaluma
3\. Dane Gagai/Tyrone Peachey
4\. Latrell Mitchell
5\. Gideon Gela-Mosby (stuck behind a wealth of depth at the Cowboys)
6\. Shaun Johnson/Gareth Widdop (experience and solid goal kickers)
7\. Luke Brooks
8\. Ben Matulino
9\. Matt McIlwrick
10\. James Graham © (a true leader and cheaper than Woods)
11\. Chris McQueen
12\. Chris Lawrence
13\. Elijah Taylor (c)

14\. Ava Seumanufagai
15\. Sauoso Sue
16\. Nelson Asofa-Solomona
17\. Jamal Idris/Josh Aloiai/Jacob Liddle

I'd also have a look at these established players pending money leftover or if we missed out on the above:

Agnatius Paasi
Charlie Gubb
Albert Vete
Russell Packer
Nathan Brown
Taane Milne (rumours have it we've already got him)
James Roberts
Blake Ferguson
Daniel Tupou
Alex Glenn
Luke Lewis (1 yr)
Ryan Hoffman (1yr)
Bodene Thompson
Felise Kaufusi
Aiden Guerra
Tyrone Roberts
Tuimoala Lolohea
Chad Townsend
Clint Gutherson
Aaron Gray

Out of our current crop for depth:

Moses Suli (needs time to develop)
Josh Aloiai
Michael Chee-Kam
JJ Felise
Junior Tatola
Tim Grant (may go 1 more year)
Jack Littlejohn
Esan Marsters
Kevin Naiqama (good for depth only)

We've lacked depth for years, we can finally set ourselves up to be competitive across the park and when injuries strike:

Jordan Drew
Chanze Nicole-Klokstad
Kato Ottio
Kurt Mann
Sandor Earl
Dylan Edwards

Who I'd love to sign:

Coen Hess - but dreaming is dreaming

I found this portion of an article written by Steve Mascord (SMH) interesting in relation to the constant speculation in the media…

"In the short time he has been out of first grade coaching Ivan Cleary says "more speculation" is the biggest thing that has changed.

It's true.

For most of my career, the aim in a news story was to have a quote in the third paragraph. That has changed for two major reasons: one, you can't just get a player on the phone when you feel like it anymore.

And two, a story with a quote is easy to "lift" by a rival. On the other hand, if you hang an unsourced story on a byline or a reporter's name, the reader or viewer has to keep coming to your website, station or channel.

Commercially, it is actually in a media outlet's interests not to quote people or confirm rumours because they lose control of their content as soon as they do.

The personal relationships between the media professionals and coaches, players and officials have eroded to such an extent that a reporter is far more willing to call for a coach to be sacked or a player to be dropped than before. He's got nothing to lose, the coach or player doesn't talk to him anyway.

Wayne Bennett has seen the process first-hand.

The rugby league media is being taken over by rights holders and the governing body itself, which will run its own website from next year.

Mainstream media is losing resources, relevance and access while television reporters, retired players and current stars sit around in the rarefied air of TV studio green rooms, where the old paradigm is recreated with the help of healthy appearance fees."

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/the-two-really-crazy-things-about-rugby-league-in-australia-right-now-20170420-gvocgl.html

Really good article. Cleary says something about this in the presser today, paraphrasing him, that some people believe the off-field coverage is as important as the on-field games. I suppose it's like fantasy footy, Dally Ms, player trades, drafts etc., all the speculation and discussion becomes its own beast, separate from the actual matches and form of the teams; fills in the mid-week gaps, so to speak.

One of the journos then asked Cleary if he had a suggestion for how player transfers could be better handled, he declined to comment further.
