Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I'd take Gordon for 1 year with a one year option in our favour. He is a good goal kicker and the best fullback at our club. Tui would learn his craft under him and would be a utility. Preferably Connor Watson and Tui fight it out as fullback but it sounds like he is going to the knights.

Is Watson going to Knights?

I read it somewhere not sure if it's confirmed.

Would've taken the likes of Lewis, Hoffman or Gordon a month or so ago but I like the direction we're heading in with our recruitment.
A top flight goal kicker is definitely one target, but they're hard to come by and going on Cleary's talk in the Q&A it seems like he'll just be putting plenty of time on Lolohea's boot.
Don't really think we need another backrower with McQueen, Lawrence, the development of Marsters and to a lesser extent the utility of ET. I think we're better off getting a feel more experienced props (not named Tim Grant) to give Packer & Matulino some breathing room and help our kids develop. I'd go hard after Ofahengaue, he's a definite upgrade on any of our benchies, and get him some support in Brenton Lawrence or Tagataese (ideally both). I'd also sign up Idris again, he'd be great fully fit but a relatively no-risk play if he doesn't make it back. As others have said, Taylor can move to an edge to account for a Ofahengaue or Twal coming on at prop, and I'm happy to swap Idris and Marsters if Jamal gets back to what we started to see before he got injured. I love Rowdy but I can't find a place for him in the team below, and we'd be better served with him leading from the front in NSW Cup.

8\. Matulino
9\. McIlwrick
10\. Packer
11\. Marsters
12\. McQueen
13\. Taylor
14\. Ofahengaue
15\. Tagataese
16\. Idris
17\. Twal/Aloiai/B. Lawrence

Need a impact forward that runs really hard like Vete did for the Warriors this week whom is also off contract.

Definitely need impact forward off the bench. Vete a good option.

How can the NRL register new contracts for players at clubs where there is anecdotal evidence to suggest they will not be cap compliant? Is it within the guidelines to stockpile players so you can deny other clubs of a fair chance of signing them? Surely a strong Newcastle is in the best interest of the NRL.

I see this as a big advantage for top teams even if they are 'under the cap' (which is a big if)

They can always sign big stars on big money because if it ever doesn't work out, they know they'll be easy enough to offload. Like say Barba at the Broncos.

Whereas we have a substandard squad and when we were looking to offload someone, nobody was even interested.

The top clubs can therefore always have a better overall squad, even if they have to offload a player every now and then.

Agreed he would be a good pick up and provide a lot more starch to our forwards

After watching yesterday's game it just confirmed my precious sentiment that there is a gaping hole in the hooker position that needs filling. Haven't heard anything about them addressing it either. But it needs to be looked at

Just had a quick scroll through my database and it's pretty slim pickings for off contract hookers. Michael lichaa the pick of the bunch which is pretty horrendous (assuming the peats re-signing is true) outside of that someone like Paul carter is probably the next best. But he's caught up in the SKD cocaine issue.

We were linked to Mitch Rein last year who wanted too much coin but his value has dropped. Our pack is being dominated hardest position to judge is hooker.
I'd take the risk Liddle comes good after a year of first grade. MM is a good backup.

We need another prop and a powerful rep level backrower first. I'm more concerned with Tui as a fullback without any plan B.

Plenty of decent props on the market and I agree signing someone like brenton lawrence or Albert vete would be ideal however the tigers do have 3 pretty well credentialed rookie props on the books for next year as well so maybe Cleary is thinking about blooding them.

As for back up fullback Tyson gamble can cover that position if required though I wouldn't be surprised to see him usurp Luke brooks at some point next year too.

If we wanted another hooker Matt Parcell would be the best option that we would be some prospect of getting.

Reynolds might be an option. If that's the thinking than that would make some sense in the the rumour that Connor Watson is still a WT target.

SG we have signed most of the targets we were linked to. Do you know who the club is looking at we are rumoured to be looking at Lawrence, Rona, Watson, Vete, Gordon.

Posted during the week that the info (while not an internal source) on Rona is that he is a done deal to tigers if force fold. Vete was offered a contract a while ago but he looks set to stay in NZ now or head to GC. Tigers approached Watson when Moses stuff went down. Was shut down by roosters management they won't release him early. Haven't heard anything on Gordon

Who are the 3 rookie props you're referring to?

I imagine it would be Twal, JJ Felise and Tatola.
