Sign Isaako or Rhyse Martin ASAP please Tigers

No chance on either, Isaako was rested not dropped expect him back in first grade next week, if we were chasing anyone from Melbourne, I would hope it would be Drinkwater

@Nelson I understand all that - he wasn't on big money and at the time Tedesco hadn't signed. Our recruitment/retention obviously didn't have the foresight that Melbourne had who signed him despite the drawbacks you mentioned. As for the no great loss - i read that about every player we lose. Its becoming a real pain to develop these young players who when they are within a yr or two of NRL or have started to make their mark at NRL level are poached by the likes of Melbourne and the rorters. I personally don't see any benefit whatsoever in having juniors. We wear the cost of developing not just the ones who make it but also every junior who doesn't go on to elite level. And how many that do make at NRL level either debut here or stay on as one club players.

@Kul 100 percent he was a twig with us always injured he went to storm to become a man

Sounds like Liddle to me, and 70% of the forum seem to want to dump him.

He was behind Teddy here... But he was also behind Slater down there... "behind teddy" therefore is no excuse
Papenhuyzen and Jnr Tatola 2 big losses

Well, Teddy still had probably a ten year career ahead of him, whilst Slater was finishing up, so that comparison doesn't really work.

But yes, it does seem we need someone better at identifying potential as we seem to lose out more than we win.

@TigersBusDriver not much we could do about Papenhuyzen - we were right to do everything we could to keep Tedesco and it just didn't work out for us. I'm glad Matthew Johns was up to speed with the history of things in the Fox commentary and didn't just play the line of the Tigers letting another one get away.

Was never given a chance here. If i remember right everyone used to say he was too small for NRL. Didn't look that small tonight.

Too small at the time, and rightly so, he was still very young.

He’s worked hard and bulked up, kudos to him and our loss indeed!

Let's face it the system at the Melbourne Storm is just far superior to any others at building fringe first graders and young players, enabling them to reach their potential and play like Papenhyuzen played last night. He, Koro, Ado-Carr and Seve are all better players by far than they were playing with us. Seve seemed to be with us for ages, but never played anywhere near as well as he has with Melbourne.

Some of it is timing, they move clubs just at the time they are about to blossom as a player, but mostly I think it's the Storm's system that brings out the best in them. It's happened all throughout their existence, with many other clubs cast offs as well, not just ours, so no surprises it's still happening now. God even Adam Blair played good football during his time there! You wouldn't dare not to with Bellamy as your coach.

@innsaneink Being behind Slater was pretty much perfect for him though because he was 18 looking to come in to first grade over the next year or two which would coincide with Slater retiring.
Melbourne do seem to do a really good job of stockpiling talent though. They don't seem to care too much about being overstocked in positions, they just want talented kids in their system because they can pay off big time on relatively low contracts. Hopefully we start taking a similar approach with the likes of Cini, Talau etc. if they keep showing promise.

They must do more than just have an intimidating coach. Whatever they do, their scouts, their processes, their personnel, I wish we could also do.

Storm do have the players to make you look good, and give you the opportunity to improve your game.

If you were stuck in ISP at the tigers and had the opportunity if on the market to go to the Storm - would you go.

Young blokes the country over don't want to wait if they can help it.

They want it all now.

@TigerTiger yeah I thought of the stages of their respective careers after posting.. Good point... Still as someone else said if storm come knocking hard to say no. Eh

@Nelson I screamed from the highest building about young Papenhuyzen and we got the stock answers from Willow and co that he is too light and a couple of years away from the NRL. That we lost him is a disgrace. Douehi, Papenhyzen, Suli and Seyfarth played in the same SG Ball side for Balmain We kept one and that is a major issue at the club,

It just happens. A decent player on the fringe will go where he gets a run. Wish we could have kept Pappy, but we schnaffled Twal in the same circumstances. I know who'd I prefer.

@Masterton WIth our extreme lack of pace and Korobeite, JAC and Papenhuyzen all having played at our club and the best we can do "oh, we got job blogs?. It doesn't pass the sniff test and there was no reason we couldn't have kept all and signed whomever we wanted., Poor poor and poor,

Honestly I can't blame them. My love for Tigers aside, if I was a player, and someone offered me a position in the Tigers squad or in the Storm squad, as long as the location was not an issue Storm would have to win hands down. Hopefully that will change, or start to change?

@pawsandclaws1 I'm not trying to justify it. I just think it's unavoidable. I would have liked to have kept all 3, but have a look at the talent that Melby has lost in the last 5 years, but nobody cares because they keep winning.

Thats my point exactly - Melbourne and rorters are very good at identifying these players that are developed elsewhere. Costs them nothing - they are nothing more than parasites. They sign them on minimum wage and if they don't work out its no big deal. Whereas clubs like us, Penrith, Parra are spending time, money and resources bringing these players through the ranks only to see the better ones end up playing elsewhere.

I guess that's the problem when only some clubs are developing juniors and others aren't.

If ten clubs only are putting resources into developing juniors, and the juniors of those ten clubs are spread over 16 clubs, then every club developing misses out, receiving less then they put in even accounting for acquiring some juniors from elsewhere.

Look at the Sharks with Bronson Xerri, Dragons with Zac Lomax or Storm with Scott Drinkwater. I described them as franchise players. We don't appear to understand that it is these players who have the "extra" which determine the success of clubs.

@TigerTiger By developing juniors you have first crack at them. First chance to see them, assess them, use them in first grade a re-sign them. The Tigers' problem is they don't take enough advantage of this window. When they "lock up" a player it's often only for a couple of years so, like Tedesco, they can still leave in their prime. Or they wait too long so, like Addo-Carr, the player's talent is widely known and there's no chance to get a favourable deal.

People on here always complain about big signings or the lack thereof, but you don't win premierships with players on full value or overs only. It's all about value - who is delivering more than their contract pays. A couple of pages ago there were people supporting the idea of signing George Burgess. Does anyone think there is any chance that guy is going to deliver more than his next contract pays him? You'll never see a club like Melbourne signing that kind of player unless for some reason they can get him for super cheap. It's dumbarse clubs like the Titans, Parra and Tigers that keep convincing themselves that one or two expensive "big name" players will somehow make all the difference.

To be successful, a club like the Tigers needs to put it's resources into identifying talent (meaning its own juniors and those from elsewhere) getting it when it's cheap and locking it up before the bidding war starts. It won't always work and of course there's no harm at all in complementing what you build with free agents where they really will make a difference. But it's got to be more efficient to find a Twal and sign him long term than to chase a succession of Packers.
