If we are 6/2 after our first 8 games, would that validate our recruitment drive?

No, a finals spot would. Tigers have started well last couple years only to be found out later in the season.

Smoke, what does that say about the roster?

Depth. Essentially for 2 years tigers have had 2.5 mil sitting on the sidelines (reynolds,Packer, matulino, mcqueen) + Pascoe fine. Hard to compete when playing 3 mil disadvantage to other teams.

You will get great odds

Seriously dude your rant on Rugby is totally uncalled for

Mate there is only 1 rugby code worth talking about and that's League. Union's been fighting a losing battle in this country ever since they decided to cling onto their amateur origins by refusing to pay players, provide insurance or assist them whilst they also worked FT jobs.

After many many decades, Union eventually realised that professionalism was the way to go. In many respects, they are decades behind League in innovation, player support and crowd engagement.

And since Rugby League has sprung into existence, Union has intentionally and systematically tried to use its influence and deeper foundation history to suppress League. This runs everything from the gamut of head-hunting League players, to extermination of the game in Vichy France.

You are correct that AFL will do everything it can to grind League out of existence, but fundamentally AFL and League do not compete in the same space - different core states, school systems, player body shapes, international game etc.

League and Union are active competitors and I have no interest in supporting or upholding Union. I am sure that there are very very many genuine, decent and hardworking people playing low-tier union all over the country, and I hold nothing against them, only to politely suggest they consider League as a superior alternative.

But at the other end of the spectrum, Union typically remains an upper-class caste-protecting mechanism, desperately clung to by the gentry. There are indeed regular folks plying their trade, but all the influence and decision making in Union is entrenched in elitism. This is especially true in countries like Scotland, England, France and South Africa.

Jirskyr I invite you to come to a training session with the Pirates to see the make up of the club, only then are you able to make such a judgement call.

Also, I believe there has been a number of high profile NRL players seconded to AFL, Hunt and Folau come to mind. I think you will agree that there has been significant movement, player wise, both ways between League and Union.

Having played both League and Union at rep schoolboy levels and I can appreciate the love of both codes to this day.

BTW I went to a very poor public school (Birrong Boys High)

So come on down to a training session, we can always use another person to help out with the teams and you will be warmly welcomed

Hey I left there in 1976

I don’t see how or why Rabbitohs would want to go for jac they have more than enough backs

My theory is to team up as many Koori players as they can. For Redfern locals that would be amazing

Of course if it’s $2.5m x2 years, that’s $5m cap disadvantage.
That’s effectively a 26% cap reduction. If that was issued as a penalty to any team in the nrl, you would doubt they would play finals footy.
I think you’re right about the fading being a symptom of poor depth.

Well when the good clubs see an opportunity to upgrade a position they do it. Roosters did the same thing with Mitchell Pearce when Cronk became available. It's a good strategy.

Because the season is so long yep it is the main reason. However there is a lack of talent in key positions and the stats back it up.

Tigers rank 9th in points but 6th in TIP And 4th in completion % but 9th in all run meters and offloads , 13th in line breaks 11th in line break assists and 10th in kick return meters. The creativity from the ruck and backs is lacking badly.

No way should a team that ranks top 6 in completion and TIP should be mid to bottom half of the field in the rest of the key stats

While people were sad to see matto go, He didn’t bring diversity, I think by seasons end LL will be considered an upgrade

2019: 11th --- 9th

TOP8: 6 -------- 2

Ladder position improved 7 times from mid season VS backwards 6 times.

But interestingly the Tigers never improved to make the 8 if not already there by RD13. Conversely the Tigers faded to miss the 8, 4 out of 6 times after being inside at RD13.

Without factoring in injuries, what the stats tell me is that defensively sound teams are the ones who make the 8 consistently. Primarily attack minded teams (like the tiges have been over the yrs) seem to get figured out pretty quickly by the elite squads, who dry up our attack which then pressures our defence, hence the back end fades.

I mean, we've never really had an issue scoring points but for as long as I can remember we've had the issue of conceding them.
To sum it up I'd much rather see an improved defensive performance this season compared to an improved attack.

2019 was a massive improvement from 2018 where tigers ranked in the bottom 3 of most attracting stats.

Compare last 8 games to first 8 Games I think that’s where you will find the biggest discrepancy. Middle is a bit plodding with byes and origin etc. without looking Id be shocked if tigers have a winning record in the last 8 weeks of the season
