Rugby is miles bigger than league on a world scale i’m afraid. The rate the NRL is going at the moment league will be dead well before Rugby

Is that actually borne out in the data though? Global and domestic rugby vs global and domestic league? They are lightyears apart in Australia and I am not sure that the IRB would run to the rescue if Rugby Australia went belly-up.

Pm If ya want some stats, won’t clog this thread up. 🙂

Absolutely mate, 7 countries have professional rugby league teams, and about 18 have professional rugby teams, mind you rugby has only been professional since 1995 due to restrictions on payments etc. rugby has over 3,500,000 registered participants (i believe incl. professionals) Cant find figured worldwide for league but Australia has 350,000 and is leagues biggest market, with the UK only adding a further 45,000. Mind you domestically Rugby League does have a higher average attendance.

You guys still going on about rugby....please do us all a favour and start a new thread and discuss in there...stop filling this thread up with irrelevant jargon

Im with you on this (at this stage). Matto was head and shoulders our best forward and a very good player but what was he? He wasnt really an impact player, he wasnt a workhorse, had pretty good hands but rarely used it.

Im glad LL is an out and out impact player. IMO this team needs more specialists and less beige jack of all trades.

2006 really stands out for me premier's to 11th,

2005 was also last time the Tigers improved from outside the 8 at the halfway mark.
RD13 - 11th, RD26 - 4th

Recipe for a premiership right there LOL

Could be wrong as my memory is questionable going back that far but I believe there was a period around that time where 4 years in a row the premiers missed the finals the following year

Dogs won 04 then missed 8 in 05. Same with the Tigers 05 - 06.

Not sure about other ones

I just posted this in the Preseason thread, but it seems to me this is a better place for it.

What is the story with Rapana? I thought he had gone to RU but I saw in the Raiders foum that he wanted to go back to Raiders but the NRL wouldnt let him on a discounted salary to get under the cap?

Seriously dude your rant on Rugby is totally uncalled for

Mate there is only 1 rugby code worth talking about and that's League. Union's been fighting a losing battle in this country ever since they decided to cling onto their amateur origins by refusing to pay players, provide insurance or assist them whilst they also worked FT jobs.

After many many decades, Union eventually realised that professionalism was the way to go. In many respects, they are decades behind League in innovation, player support and crowd engagement.

And since Rugby League has sprung into existence, Union has intentionally and systematically tried to use its influence and deeper foundation history to suppress League. This runs everything from the gamut of head-hunting League players, to extermination of the game in Vichy France.

You are correct that AFL will do everything it can to grind League out of existence, but fundamentally AFL and League do not compete in the same space - different core states, school systems, player body shapes, international game etc.

League and Union are active competitors and I have no interest in supporting or upholding Union. I am sure that there are very very many genuine, decent and hardworking people playing low-tier union all over the country, and I hold nothing against them, only to politely suggest they consider League as a superior alternative.

But at the other end of the spectrum, Union typically remains an upper-class caste-protecting mechanism, desperately clung to by the gentry. There are indeed regular folks plying their trade, but all the influence and decision making in Union is entrenched in elitism. This is especially true in countries like Scotland, England, France and South Africa.

Jirskyr I invite you to come to a training session with the Pirates to see the make up of the club, only then are you able to make such a judgement call.

Also, I believe there has been a number of high profile NRL players seconded to AFL, Hunt and Folau come to mind. I think you will agree that there has been significant movement, player wise, both ways between League and Union.

Having played both League and Union at rep schoolboy levels and I can appreciate the love of both codes to this day.

BTW I went to a very poor public school (Birrong Boys High)

So come on down to a training session, we can always use another person to help out with the teams and you will be warmly welcomed

Hey I left there in 1976

Just googled what is going on with Rapana. Earliest he could play is round 10. He is 30 and after six months bludging in Japan.....its a no from me.

So much for JAC declaring when he left the Tigers that he wanted to return one day. If Souths don't get Arrow then their forward depth is very thin (even with him hard to make up for losing the 2 Burgess boys & Sutton, not to mention back ups in Britt & Turner), no use having a great backline with no go forward particularly if they get a few injuries to their starting pack!!

As WT fans we know quite well what happens if you have a powder puff forward pack.

I don’t see how or why Rabbitohs would want to go for jac they have more than enough backs

My theory is to team up as many Koori players as they can. For Redfern locals that would be amazing

Except they no longer play at Redfern so don’t see how it would benefit the local area

I think you'll find an extremely large population of Indigenous people living in the local Redfern/South Sydney area would be hugely ecstatic that their team are recruiting Indigenous players. Why wouldn't it benefit them to have more Indigenous players? They train out of there and do lots of community work in the local Redfern area........

Some players make those around them better players while some can have a negative influence on the performance of those around them. Teamwork is an interesting phenomenon.

Wests Tigers target Joey Leilua after missing out on Latrell Mitchell

Canberra Raiders caught in heavy hailstorm

Wests Tigers have made some poor recruitment decisions in recent years. Now they are ready to gamble on one of the NRL’s most volatile players.

But while the anticipated signing of Joey Leilua is another decision that could easily backfire, it also has the makings of a terrific partnership.

That is providing Leilua also agrees to make a change to his game that many have been calling for from him for years.

Leilua is ready to make the move from Canberra to Concord after a meeting with Michael Maguire on Monday.

There is no denying some people around the game are privately wondering how Leilua will fit in with Maguire’s hard-edged coaching style, fearing this could be another deal that ends in tears for the Tigers.

But it’s important to acknowledge it is not Maguire who has to change his ways, it’s Leilua.

At 28, Leilua has been basically forced out of Canberra following Curtis Scott’s arrival from Melbourne and he has no one to blame for that bar himself.

Ricky Stuart gave him plenty of chances over the years but in the end the Raiders said all they needed to say when they went and signed Scott, regardless of the fact Leilua still had a year to run on his contract.

The Tigers have their own concerns given they had previously put an offer on the table but it fell well short of what Leilua was asking for.

But it is now expected a deal could be finalised in the coming days following Monday’s catch up.

The Tigers are becoming increasingly desperate to land a significant signing after missing out on Latrell Mitchell among others this off-season.

It is no use having more than $1 million available in their salary cap for this season if it means finishing out of the top-eight again.

The fact is the Tigers boast the longest finals drought of any NRL club having not made the play offs since Tim Sheens was in charge in 2012.

The last significant spending spree the club went on was before Maguire arrived when Ivan Cleary was in charge and they signed the likes of Russell Packer, Josh Reynolds, Ben Matulino and Chris McQueen, none of which exactly set the world on fire.

But while they have a squad of players that rarely give anything but their best, it can’t be ignored that they just don’t have the strike power to consistently match it with the best rosters.

No one can argue when he is on his game Leilua is as good as any centre in the comp, which is why he can be a great signing for the Tigers.

All he has to do is commit to getting rid of some of the mug tactics that he should have dumped years ago.

Just had a chat with my brother, his neighbour is on the coaching staff at parra,we were talking about this Stefano bloke....the reason parra aren't releasing him is they are doing everything to get him to pull out of the deal with us.....even using Moses and Matterson to badmouth this club
