Does anyone have one?
What are they like?
Pros…cons?
Any info appreciated.

My g/f has just bought one, will arrive tomorrow.

Im not very UTD on the latest techno stuff, but Im pretty sure smart TVs are much more useful and popular than the 3D tv fad a few years back.

As soon as she agreed to a TV , the sales bloke immediately says "You need one of these" high quality outdoor antenna cable....they were $70 odd for 20 metres...we didnt get one

I got a filter from Jaycar for an existing antenna cable...hopefully this helps...not sure, it was 14 bucks

All depends what you plan to do with the Smart function, basically if you want to use the internet and have your screen as a big monitor its fine. It was a novelty having my facebook page in full screen, but then you need a wireless keyboard to type on it as well. There are the usual array of games that you can access via their built in Android store and the music streaming function is good. Also there are some TV providers offering secondary repeat screenings on their Apps similar to what you have on an Android Tablet. It basically becomes a big screen tablet, but novelty effect like the 3D option which was also on mine soon wears off. If this helps.

I got a Kogan a month or two ago.

I didn't need anything fancy so a lot of my friends recommended and said they are reliable and cheap. I haven't had any issues with it so far. you can check them out here: https://www.kogan.com/au/

tbh i have never really seen the point of internet through your tv. personally, i often like to have both at the same time, and will often be looking at my ipad while watching tv. i even rarely use picture in picture (or side by side on my tv) or any functions other than watching what is on it.

also, i have had a couple of goes at internet through my apple tv or playstation and its just annoying. a tablet you have a stylus or finger and can type and navigate really easily and i am under the impression that navigating through a tv is cumbersome. also, as nice as my little mac keyboard is, its a pain when youre on the lounge.

if you have an apple tv and an ipad you can mirror it to use the tv as a monitor and i dont even bother with that.

personally, i would spend what you would on a smart tv on a better quality one and get it calibrated or look on the net for the best picture settings for realism rather than bright colours, etc.

btw, dont be fooled by the good ol' "lets make this tv we need to get rid of much brighter and crisper than the one next to it" trick like i did once. id recommend reading online reviews. there are billions of them!

fwiw, the last two i have bought have been Sony Bravias and both are still fantastic.

Only smart functions I use on my Sony Bravia are Netflix and YouTube, other than that you wouldn't really use it for much else

Streaming. Netflix and catch up on free to air TV. Good to bribe the SO with to let you watch the footy/cricket.

I was given a 4K TV (Cant tell the difference with regular programming) as a Gift a month or so back.

The On demand functionality is great in general for doing the Masterchef thing after the kids are asleep on our tablets or laptops upstairs.

We dont utilise Internet on it in the family room.

Got a couple of Sony Bravias. Enjoy using the apps on the SEN. The only thing I don't like doing with it is browsing the internet with a remote. Sucks arse.

What kind ink?

We also have a couple of Sony Bravias.
Watch Youtube on them often.
Also stream music whilst cleaning / completing tasks around the house.

Netflix and the on demand stuff is real good but chews up your internet downloads if you don't have unlimited or a big cap

We have an LG smart TV in the main lounge room.

One of the best purchases we've ever made.

Can stream media from the main PC straight to the TV. Picture Quality is fantastic. The "App" selection is brilliant as well. Fantastic for Foxtel.

I used to have a media PC I built from the ground up sitting next behind the old TV which was utilised via a wireless keyboard and mouse combo to send my movies, tv shows, downloads to the TV- and this just simply blows it out of the water. It's in the garage now gathering dust.

the rubbish regarding expensive cables is just that - rubbish. buy all your cabling from Jaycar, and don't spend a heap.

I'm pretty sure she got a sony bravia 48 inch

She has a smaller Kogan and was considering a Kogan smart but the Sony was a great deal.

I've had a Bravia for 8 years…I agree good.tvs

I.was.concerned about the data usage of course.the salesman brushed that off...made me suss.

Also her wifi in her unit isn't real good I guess this will affect it too?

Bravia are safe as…
Bought one in '06 and it still works perfect.
Recently got the 70" one for the living room.

Never trust the salesman, they tried to sell us a powerboard worth 300 bucks claiming it's for media and if anything happens we'll be covered.

Got a belkin media power board for like 30 bucks elsewhere.

Gotta have decent Wi-Fi.
A friend of mine watches net flix but if any one uses a device on the network during it'll kill the movie and make it freeze / lag.

Have five LG ones, web browser is okay, youtube is good and the rest is useless.

One for every wall and one on the roof. Looking forward while you're laying in bed?

cant say i have been looking at tvs for some time now (or anything for that matter! ) but i have in the past overheard sales assistants coming out with the biggest load of crap trying to sell tvs. once i was in harvey norman and overheard this guy spruiking on about the same samsung i had replaced (ONE burnt pixel - SO annoying!!) with a bravia to a young couple.

when he walked away, i went up to them and told them what he had said was utter crap. told them my experience with that tv (the burnt pixel one was even a replacement!) and they didnt get it.

more thumbs up from here for sony: havent bought one for years because i havent had to!

Ink, we got a 55" Panasonic smart TV, 3D as well. Had no probs at all. Used to have Austar but got Netflix now.

I use the wifi all the time with media server. We watch the occasional 3D movie but there aren't many good ones about. We also use the inbuilt apps at times.

Smart TVs are good especially if you optimise the wifi features.
