So who is better than Sheens, available and why?

@Chris said:
John Morris was a good buy but used incorrectly. Had he been used as a back rower/ back up hooker he would have been ok. He didn't miss a game for the tigers and when he played anywhere but the halves he did pretty good.

He was bought as a halfback (Sheens' words not mine) and that made him a terrible buy. He was also poor at hooker.

Ha….how long we going to keep bringing up Morris......

Sheens will never admit he was wrong....why would he....

Morris is gone.....as a utility he is great ...as a playmaker he is crap ....yet still Stuart picked him at half not to cover injury...you think the Sharks aren't desperate for a win...Stuart used Morris....

Sheens retention from 05 hampered his recruitment' 06-08 as it tied a lot of youngsters to the ' team ....I mean Gibbs, Fulton, Collis, Halatau, Harrison, Farah, Heighington, Marshall all probably got more than they where worth at the time...and I doubt very many fans at the time felt these extentions and upgrades where not fantastic for the Club....Sheens showed tremendous loyalty and faith in these blokes...geez he kept picking them everyweek.....

As or Halfback I think Sheens did see his error early on....We went after Monaghan but didn't have enough or weren't prepared to fork out the coin he was asking....so he banked on the '05 brigade + Morris to get the job done....

They fell short...he's cleared the deadwood....bought marquee sigings in the past 2 years...assembled another crop of just as talented youngsters that we had in '05....probably more talented

It's his job now to get it done...for all his faults Sheens is not stupid.....no excusses

Well said Geo! You can sugar coat our situation or you can be scathing. Geo just outlined the bottom line on how it is/was. I would love to see anyone argue any differently.

Agree with Geo.

The only coach available with proven NRL experience is clearly Folkes.Im prepared to forgive him for his final days at the Dogs simply because he (& management & several key players)had been there too long.Having said that, his teams were never reknowned for their attacking prowess,so a potential clash in styles may have casualties.
Kearney is interesting, but really hasnt done enough to warrant a 1st grade gig in my opinion.Taylor & Stuart are proven losers at this level,so neither should be genuine contenders.
Nathan Brown seems to have evolved as a coach in ESL,& obviously has learnt from having been thrown into the role way too early, but NRL is another step up.Even so, he is a genuine candidate but no standout.
Royce isnt worth talking about..frankly he is a a liability to Sheens & should have been moved on some time ago.
Think Mathew Elliot & Graham Henry will be available, but ditto re lack of NRL success.I think both have talent, but results are disappointing
The other left field candidate is the home grown product who took our U20s to the GF last year..Gentles??Whoever it was, quite impressive job in getting us to play like a team.
One thing for sure..if we fail again this year, someone will take over,as Sheens will be long gone to Souths where his spin will still work with Rusty..well,for a sesaon or two if the results dont meet expectations.Altho maybe Sheens can stretch that out for another 5 years too? He's very, very good

What else does he need to do???

That 20's bloke is Grant Jones….Yes I rate him highly as well...Gentle is the guy in the blue shirt who runs the water for FG....

Anyone who can get a 20's team to defend for 70mins...can coach.....most teams can't do it for 40...watching them carve Parra up last week it was like watching a carbon copy of First Grade....

Gentle was the Under 20's coach in 2008 wasn't he? Now he is one of the Assistant Coaches along with Royce, I think.

Deliver some results on his own, rather than attach himself to the coat-tails of Bellamy & Bennett, because thats what it will be like coaching 1st grade.
He didnt do so great with NZ last yr by himself.
Not saying hes without talent, but he is quite a significant gamble and not top of my list

I would throw everything possible at him Ink, but I just can't see it happening.

Gus has a dream, relaxing, easy job, talking about the game he loves. He gets paid more than we could ever offer him and it's a much easier job with almost no stress. Why would you get paid less to take on a way more stressful job?

Gould makes almost the same $$ at nine that he wld make as a coach, totally stress-free,with no potential damage to his reputation or ego.Hed but nuts to go back into the cauldron

Thats my thought, although some people thrive on pressure and want to accept challenges. That is why most coaches keep coaching. Quite a few coaches could probably get a good media gig if they wanted it.

He would be nuts and that's why I think he won't ever coach a club side again.

Would love to see him coaching Origin again. If we lose the series again (which we will as the same selectors are there) then they should piss everyone off and let Gould coach, pick his own staff etc.

i take it the coach has the biggest say in what players he wants at his club, so if he hasn't recruited well and the players aren't up to it ,and getting beat most weeks, does that make him a bad coach.? i mean sharkies haven't really got the top shelf players to win most games, so does the blame fall on the coach ? lets just say if Fittler came back tomorrow and took over coach at Melbourne storm ,and they continued winning , would he be regarded as a good coach or would people say it's because he has the talent in his team .sheens in the past 5 years hasn't done that well at the tigers, im just a little confused on who is a good coach and who isn't.anyone?? people are saying Gould is a great coach, would he make a difference at cronulla if he took over tomorrow ??

I judge a coach on how their team is performing 12 months after they join the club. This is why I dont rate Stuart or Hagan despite winning premierships. Both inherited very good squads that soon fell apart under their tenure.

For what it is worth, Sheens did the opposite - he came to a club with a woeful squad (all critical positions were filled by reserve graders) and built a competitive side from top to bottom.

. . . . but what happened thereafter ??
