Taylor thinking long-term for Tigers

Thu 11 Jun, 2015, 1:42pm
By Jack Brady, National Correspondent, NRL.com

Despite his team failing to win their past four games, Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor says he is chasing overall improvement from his team and not necessarily results.

Unconcerned with the Tigers sitting at 13th at the halfway point of the season, Taylor is confident his team will grow in stature in due time.

The coach refused to label Friday's clash with the Rabbitohs a must-win game despite Wests' last victory coming in Round 8 against the Bulldogs.

"It's not about the result. It's about our performances. We're working really hard to improve our performances," Taylor said prior to the Tigers' Captain's run on Thursday.

"It's about what we're developing here and we're not overly concerned about where we are right now on the ladder because we know we're heading in the right direction in general.

"We're on a path to improvement, on a path to playing a tougher style of footy. A style of footy that will be more successful for us down the track."

Another sign of Taylor's performance-first mindset is the importance he places on only naming players who are at 100 per cent and fighting fit.

Asked about the return of centres David Nofoaluma and Tim Simona this week, Taylor said the club prided itself on playing injury-free – while also building up the team's depth as seen by the recent debuts of Nathan Milone, Delouise Hoeter, Lamar Liolevave and Manaia Cherrington.

"It's really big for us to have [Nofoaluma and Simona] back in the team. David was just a couple of per cent off playing last week but we talked at the start of the year about not pushing guys out there before they were ready to play," Taylor said.

"Even though we do need a win, it's more important we make sure the guys are right. Just from talking to them, a little bit of that has been done in the past.

"As a player [when playing injured] you perform poorly and you're getting a bad reputation when really you're doing a great thing for your club by getting out there and playing in an NRL game when you're not fit to play."

While it's no secret the Tigers have made defence their main focus this season, the fact they have only scored an average of eight points per match in their past four games is of concern.

"We work on our attack every week and have done since the start of the year but there's no doubt it's taken a bit of a downturn in recent weeks," Taylor said.

"We did step up what we wanted to defensively because we had some weeks which were really poor. It probably dulled our attack a little bit. Not consciously, it wasn't like we practised that way.

"We're working hard on our defence, we want to improve and it's number one for us but it doesn't mean we aren't practising our attack. It's just a matter of getting the two things to work well in tandem."

JT trying to reinvent the wheel..?

1) most of these blokes have been playing footy since 6 and are full time pros.
2) most of these players have played together for a few years, if not since November 2014 and every other day

How about a bit of innovation? A bit of tactics? A bit of originality?

Worse coach/fit ever, these days are more depressing than supporting Balmain in the 90s

If the result is irrelevant then please at least entertain us, not bore us whilst loosing . God help us from this player fighting urine sprayer.. Someone sign Toovey. At least tooveys post match rants are spectacular

Hahaha funny but totally agree

He has been the worst I have ever seen.

All I can hope is that he somehow wakes up to himself or the board fixes the issue. I've never watched such low quality footy.

Was talking to a south Sydney legend tonight told him I was upset with club and I was not shaw if I wanted to go to another game this season . I said it was not that we lost a few games its just the way the team is playing I don't see the effort …he said I was very wrong with the way I am thinking stick by them to much talent in the team and that Taylor is a bad fit and is on thin ice

If the truth be known Taylor is really thinking long term low quality negative football. He seems to be talking a lot of nonsense and needs to fess up for everybody's sake.

JT seems to think contracts actually mean something nowadays, and that no matter what he'll see his out. Our financial situation may make that a reality, but I hope to god either he changes his philosophy and we see some real football or we explore other options.

Would not surprise me one bit if the ice opened up, as the cracks are lengthening and becoming more numerous for mine. But hey, I might be wrong and the players are loving him and his tactics

After watching the latest addition of a Taylor talk feast it is OFFICIAL the Weststigers do not care about results , as one above has posted I wish this was expressed before we renewed our membership.
The CEO and board have to address this problem before it becomes chronic… Taylor has to be put in his place with his obsession with protecting his own reputation at the cost of the club / players and stake holders .
I just could not believe that a head coach of an organisation could publicly announce he does not care about results HELLO you are in a results driven business GOOSE!

So why has Sironen been playing with a bulging discuss and no strength in his arm?

Performance is more important then results ay, we'll sadly that spin doesn't work cos our performances are actually worse than the actual results

It is all about results.

You just cant burn a year or two, not in this reality.

Yeah …Terry Lamb has been blotted from my memory too...

Lamb was actually better. We played some good footy at times. Alan Jones was better - again we actually played some good footy.

Another example of spin. Honesty works so much better.

The marketing department must go into melt down every time Taylor talks to the press,he is a bit like Joe Hockey and the Libs.

We all know what he is trying to achieve, but come out and say results do not matter and basically defend the dour boring style of football we play is very hard to take as a long time member of the club.

Anyway the heat is now on,up to now the media have embraced him,but after each loss the pressure is building and I get the feeling their will be plenty more losses.

I'm sure he would know exactly what is going on with us.

Give yourself an uppercut for talking to any Souffs person to start with.

I for one am with him.

Do your thing JT - I'll look at results next year but for this season get the young guys and the older guys on the same page.

Those that bought memberships expecting results were delirious.
Those that bought memberships expecting a quick fix and bright entertaining football were delusional.

It will take time and I am waiting patiently. Whinging gets you nowhere except putting your own headspace in a better place. Doesn't help the team though and hopefully they are not reading it.

There I go - on my "High Horse" again Stryker

Normally Russell i am very positive and rarely speak badly of the players. If they have a go i am happy.

But its this negative style of play that has me depressed…..its funny they say you dont know what you've lost till its gone....and i really liked the idea of no nonsense, olskool tough type team. A bit like that grand ol Balmain side of the 80's or the Wests one of the 70's.

But now we are doing it im SOOOOOO BORED with it.

Ive actually been going back and looking at ol footage of the 2005-11 tigers and what a joy it was.Im really missing the free flowing style and high scoring games.....i hadnt realized how used to it i had become.

This style reminds me of that 03-04 time when we would grind out the occasional win...man that was depressing to be a tiger then,as it is now.

I would like to temper the fact that we seem to have lost the agro we had at the start of this year, same as last year,we bashed Souffs and Manly and then lost that spark.

I guess i could handle the losing so much better with this supposed defense if we were actually BASHING sides but we dont seem to be doing that either.

Still love the boys and hoping they turn it around.....
