My guess is TPJ has chosen the Bulldogs because they are prepared to pay more

That is the correct answer and when their policy fails again next year they will be in an even deeper hole at the end of 2022 with more years of pain ahead of them.

Or if it pays off, they will be laughing their back into the top 8. Every club has a strategy and its clear what's dogs is. Ours seems like a abit harder to read, other than refusing to pay overs anymore. One day we are going to have to bite the bullet and have fork out some doe or else our only hope is Junior talent which has its risks also.

I don't think we have to change strategy. I also think our recruitment strategy has been pretty good. I also don't think missing out on marquee players at TPJ's level is going to hurt us.

I think the signing that hurt us the most missing out on was Latrell. He is a weapon. That is what we need. We need a top marquee player or we have to play money ball.

The issue with moneyball is it's never actually won anything. The A's have been doing it for 20 years and they've not won the world series, even though they've outperformed relative to their roster spend. It's a good way to bridge some of the gap in a comp without a salary cap, but a sabermetric approach in a defined salary cap comp like the NRL has its limitations imo.

I think it's our only option. You may have to pay marquee dollars every so often to retain or attract talent but the opposite approach will always fail. You get players like Reynolds, Packer and Mbye and they kill your club.

If you waste your marquee dollars as we have you basically lower your chances of success significantly until you can unwind those contracts.

I like the Dogs signings for instance. They could come good. The problem is if some of those top dollar signings don't perform they will be in big trouble.

You are correct, but at this stage we'll be in trouble no matter what. I have no issues paying overs for certain players, we're in a position where we have to. It has to be the right players though. Paying overs for someone like Brandon Smith would be an absolute no brainer. Strengthens a position on the field and adds so much off it.

I have no issue with targeting the best youngsters, but there needs to be other good signings to complement them. They can't do it on their own.

This is not a Latrell or JAC type miss so I'm not that fussed. Would have been good to have him, but we were paying overs for potential and there's off field issues there as well.

If there's any truth to Egan Butcher that would be a decent signing at much lower cap risk. Fairly good defender and can break a tackle. Only real deficiency I have seen in his game is lack of an offload.

A miss is still a miss yet another recruit we went for and got passed over for whether that be for Money culture or whatever.
Now the list is
JAC
Latrell
TPJ

Do not over pay for a broken Dale finucane
Stick to youth
may aswell front load some guys then if we pay some of Mmbye's salary now it may make him more appealing for next year to a club.

You cannot put TPJ with the other two.

Latrell and JAC are premiership and origin winners. Proven performers.

TPJ is commanding big money on potential and sporadic form. I would have liked us to sign him, but not at all costs.

A miss like this only hurts coz its played out in the media. Are we 'Hurting' about missing out on Su'a?

The only lesson I want the club to take away from this is - stick to your guns Re: Valuations and more importantly, tell Lee to keep his mouth shut.

Lee has two lines he should say.

When asked in the media regarding a link to a player: We entertain all possibilities.

When we miss out on said player (once it's confirmed): We were comfortable with the offer made.

Would have liked him at a reasonable price for a reasonable term - also I suppose for the PR side of it (or maybe the anti - PR for NOT getting him) but seriously Im not losing sleep over it.

I think he was / is a gamble and really wouldn't have wanted us to mortgage the place to sign him

Next....... (?)

CB - even better, all he needs to say is;

'We dont publicly discuss recruitment & retention'

Simples :monkey:

Lol, I don’t know about you guys but are we missing something. Why can’t we attract players? What can be the real issue? This is not a good look for our club another high profile player turns us down. It’s a pattern now that player managers use us to up sell to other clubs, maybe from now on head of recruitment offer a big deal and give the player managers 72 hours to sign it or tell them to piss off. I feel the longer the negotiation go for the less chance we are to sign them. Get ready for a panic signing they will hard on a player for example Dale who is washed up in he’s 30s in a team that makes anyone look good just to waste money and keep the media happy

Agree 100%..

Lee’s problem is not so much that he says things.. you need too as a Chairman and leader of an organisation.. it’s that he often speaks in terms of a fan in the media..not a leader.. no more evident in the re-signing of Nofoaluma..

Go back to cliche responses in terms of recruitment.. leave emotion out of it and be professional.. let the recruitment team do their jobs..

I know as fans want transparency, but do you think the roosters fans cry out coz uncle Nick is not in the media.

Early on, I really wanted Lee to be visible. Ive now changed my tune. I want him to be the shrewd business man that he is albeit in the background. Might be hard on his ego - but he might just need to forgo instant gratification for the gratification that will come if he can lead this club to success.

So he really should just park the ego and work even harder behind the scenes.

The reason why this stings is not so much we've missed TPJ but it seems we cant get any player who is above average standard across the line at the club. The issues run deep whether its the coach, the management, the board or all of the above.

Its great to recruit to up and coming players and say we will never pay overs for players but the strategy is not working. We pick up or bring through these juniors and they leave anyway. At some point in time we have to pay overs for a players or players they just need to be the right player not Packer, Mbye, Reynolds or Matulino. For me thats the take away we have all this money to spend with no one to spend it on so we just upgrade players like nofo on way more than they should be because of fan backlash. We need change and it needs to start in the front office and work its way down.

If he is in the cooling of period, id be coming back at him with an increased offer. We can't sign anyone, need to break the bank on someone. We signed Packer for around 700k, what's 900k for TPJ then.

Wayyyyy too much money. Go and raid the best juniors and give them big money.

I have consistently defended the club Management, but this farce is a step too far.
The Chairman needs to back off and leave recruitment to those who know about it. I was not a fan of us getting TPJ, but to tell him we are interested, then we say we are not ,(with the inference that we did a background check and decided he was not for us) and then say, Oh sorry, we've changed our mind, is simply amateur hour.
Then to top it off ,we are outraged that his Manager didn't bother to return our calls!!!! Well I wouldn't have either.

Roosters won't tolerate their current decline. Lock up and upgrade the current good ones before the raping and pillaging starts and buy ourselves a couple of years.

If big Stefano isn't already as good or better than this bloke, he soon will be! If he wants to play under a guy with no head coaching record of any consequence, so be it. He can help Addo-Carr with all that tackling he didn't used to have to do at the Storm.

A tip for the club would be STOP TALKING PUBLICLY ABOUT SIGNING PLAYERS

Makes the club look like idiots if it doesn't work. Don't understand why Lee has to blab his mouth constantly

He probably thinks he’s being cutting edge or something, with all of the transparency.

I agree it’s pretty silly - as you said if a signing doesn’t work out it can be kind of embarrassing, and I can’t remember the last time a club openly admitted to pursuing a player, discussed some of the details around it, and it worked out and they signed.

My god :face_palm: Could we be anymore more of a joke? Just like with JAC, we had him. Then we did something stupid that cost us a potential game breaking player.

Now instead of having JAC and TPJ for 2022, we have Nofa, Talau and Luke Garner. Well done, management. And people on here are trusting them with rebuilding the club?? These are the same people who will be negotiating extensions for Blore, Stefano, Laurie so take a second to think about that.
