That’s the issue isn’t it - we have repeatedly done this stuff out in the open for no reason. As a result the media coverage and speculation jumps up another gear, and the fan expectation is raised as well. Thus the letdown is all the more heartfelt in turn.

The player managers put it out in the media. Clubs don't do it on purpose, none of them do. All clubs would keep it perfectly quiet if they could, but player managers use the media to try and manipulate dealings with clubs, put pressure on clubs.

There will always be stories written, and you're right that the agents will be the ones feeding the majority. But our chairman has commented publicly on all three of these now, when he really didn't need to say anything.

TPJ is a player desperate fans want to have as a talking point ...the minute he stuffs up,its why did we pay so much for a risky player...

just my opinion ...which to many aint much....

Yea I was happy around the 600k range , as guys like josh ALOIAI are getting that type of money . But 750,800k ? For TPJ. Considering all the rumoured attitude issues , bad team mate stuff , and his tight relationships with bikies . I’m disappointed , as he would have added the strike we needed , but I definitely have this feeling that we dodged a bullet on this one .
For me it’s disappointing more that we continue to perpetuate the narrative of being a dud organisation , than the fact we lost out on him . There isn’t too many players out there who really move the needle . And I heard Brandon Smith only has eyes for qld if he’s gonna leave the storm .
I’d be way more comfortable paying him the 750k than TPJ. And he’s not worth that either IMO.

Regardless of anything else TPJ is a player we identified as one we wanted, publicly courted him and ultimately missed out on to the wooden spooners.

It’s another embarrassment for the club to go on top of a growing pile of them.

I don’t think it is an embarrassment at all. We put a value on TPJ of what he was worth to the club and that’s what we offered. Another club thought he was worth more and made their offer and so he went there instead.

I for one am glad we are no longer paying overs just to get someone. Instead we place a value on their worth to the club and that’s what we offer. The player either accepts that offer or goes elsewhere. I am very happy with that process.

You missed the part where we publicly pulled out of the race to sign him and then later made contact again with his agent to renew our interest only to have him turn us down flat for the wooden spooners offering the same money.

If you don’t think thats embarrassing for the club then we’ll agree to differ.

For me shambolic doesn’t even cover it.

I wouldn’t believe anything that written about the Tigers. Clear agenda out there against the club.

This is true but a lot of this stuff was played out in public, just like Latrell and JAC and that’s why it looks so bad for the club.

I don't know what your expectation is - almost all significant signings at are played out in the media, especially if there is more than one suitor.

Even just now - everyone has ready plenty about the potential contract destinations of TPJ, about Dufty, Finucane, Cheese, Vaughan, Milford, Matt Lodge etc. It's the player managers putting the stories in the press to drum up interest and noise for their client.

If the club says "yeah we are interested", that's usually the end of it.

In all those cases though club officials refrain from commenting publicly at least until the deal is more or less done.

Our club officials on the other hand, particularly our chairman and his hat, are more than happy to be a rent a quote for the media. He did this for Latrell and JAC and three of our club officials were happy to be photographed flying up to Brisbane to talk to TPJ.

I hundred percent agree that we have very few friends in the media but we don’t half make it easy for them.

Why even fly back up less than a week after you have every club in the same vicinity! The Broncos played directly after us for Pete’s sake. Surely a talk could of been had during magic round. Getting the head honchos together on a hit and run trip just makes it all to easy for the media.

Brandon Smith would be worth $750k. He competes like a pitbull every game, you'd get your money's worth out of him I reckon. And he's only young.

Don't actually know any of that to be true. Too many folks listen to the papers like gospel.

Lee at one point said something along the lines of "move in another direction". Didn't say anything unequivocal about ceasing all negotiations or re-starting. That was paper talk only.

I welcome anyone to produce a direct quote from the that confirms anything else about negotiations with TPJ.

i can't post the interview from the SEN website
The SEN interview with Andrew Voss on 7 July he mentions
there were discussions with respect to provisions of a contract.

“But there was no formal offer put on the table.”

So we "moved in another direction" and "no formal offer was put on the table". Is that the sum total of public Tigers commentary about TPJ?

so we moved in another direction then a week later we make him another offer, we look like amateur hour

No no no... where is the confirmation from the club that we made him another offer? I am being told this was all apparently played out in public, I want the combined might of the WT Forum to post everything the Tigers said on record about the TPJ discussions.

Why would TPJ ring Michael Maguire to advise him of his decision if we never presented another offer?

There’s one guy who makes us look amateurish. He’s got to stop talking to the press.

Unfortunately he cares more about his role of his business as a sponsor then he does in his role of chairman.

just like we didn't make an offer to Latrell or JAC

I'll take that as confirmation that you don't have further quotes from Tigers.

I'll take it by your comment you have no idea

Here are the quotes:
>“There were discussions between the club Tevita’s representatives,” the Chairman said.
>
>“There was no formal offer.
>
>“But there were discussions with respect to provisions of a contract.
>
>“But there was no formal offer put on the table.”
>
>“The club, as it does with all potential opportunities on the market, considered Tevita and decided to move in a different direction.

The whole point of the discussion is people getting embarrassed by reports that Tigers abandoned negotiations, then were drawn back in to make counter-offers. I haven't seen this confirmed by anyone at the club.

You jump in to say that Lee said something, I've now gone the trouble of pulling the quotes, and all he says is they spoke to the manager. Doesn't explain why Tigers "moved on". In fact he says, verbatim, they did not make a formal offer.

That's the only thing I am aware of Tigers making public about the negotiations with Tevita Pangai.

so the three wise men flew to Brisbane for nothing then a few weeks back

??‍♂️

Further to that Madge was quoted in the Sunday Telegraph article on him saying:

“I have no idea if Tevita is coming but I am certainly interested,” he said.

“I don‘t know where it’s at but I would definitely have a player of his calibre.

“I think I can help Tevita become the best he can be and that‘s the environment I want at the club, I want players to be their best and have the right training ethic because that reflects the way you play".

Sounds like Madge thought there was an offer there.

some on hear have blinkers on and only cheer lead for the club and don't look at reality

A couple of questions for you mate, you continually critique the club.

How much would you be willing to pay for TPJ? Why would you pay that amount?

Why do you believe players are refusing to come to the Wests Tigers?

What would you do to rectify the above issues? i.e what needs to change?

Dumb question ....he has signed with the Dogs ...why is this thread still open

He has apparently been linked to Panthers for this year on a short term deal...I dont think the Dogs have announced his signing yet...I could be wrong...
source ninensm..

Panthers link was refuted yesterday - by the Panthers.

More quality rugby league ‘journalism’; it was made up.

TPJ 700k to 750k would have been a fair amount
why are they not coming to wests tigers I believe it is the coach and the fact we have an ordinary team we need to pay overs for some marquee players. Once we have one then more will follow. Dogs have recruited big name players
that helps.
Plus we need to stop playing it out in the media Lee should not comment leave it to Hartigan Sheens Madge. Let Pascoe run the club and not get involved in negotiations either we need to try something different with our approach
Signing Sheens will help with negotiations as I think players do not want to play under Madge so maybe a change of coach at some point but we have tried that in the past.
Sheens is a good start buy we need to pay overs for the right player, get one like Brandon Smith and others will come

Once you are pushing past that $700k level you really need the expectation that the player is at least an origin level player, TPJ isn't at that level consistently enough to warrant that money.

The dogs have recruited some big name players but they have left some major holes in their roster. They spent big on a winger when they don't have a hooker, a half or a fullback. Burton is a great player but I think we saw how he goes when he doesn't have the quality support around him.

The rest of you post is pretty spot on and the club would probably agree with it. I can tell you that TPJ did want to play under Madge, that is why we almost landed him despite offering less.

If TPJ thought there was a lot of pressure at the broncos wait until he starts at the Dogs ..in a relatively weak pack good luck Pangai ! every week you will be expected to perform as the doggie supporters are not kind .
With the links of the past that TPJ has Sydney is going to be a dangerous place for him to keep it together .
