I’ll start of first by saying it’s awesome to see Nofoaluma finally take out the players player and the best player for 2020 award! Absolutely well deserved! ? ? One of the best winger seasons in WT history! Been UNDERRATED for the last 8 years! Harry Grant could have easily won the award and there would have been no complaints!
BUT I can’t understand for the life of me how Luciano Leilua is NOT recognised, NOT even in the Top 5 is dropdead ridiculous! People will say it’s only awards, but I say great seasons deserve to be recognised and celebrated! You don’t see the Melbourne Storm making this mistake!
How on earth is Twal even 3rd in the voting! The bloke missed half a season with an injury and was pretty average the whole season if I was being generous! Then they’ve got Brooks in the Top 5 when he’s only had 3 try assists for a out and out halfback! Nofa plays on the wing and has 7 try assists this season! If that’s not saying something I don’t know what is! It just mindboggling to see players that should be getting recognised never do, especially Luciano Leilua and Sam McIntyre for their incredible performances all year! No wonder players start leaving this club, when the playing group/staff don’t even know who’s had a great season and who hasn’t! It’s not rocket science
Mate ,try assists are a stat that means your the last person to touch the ball prior to someone scoring a try . If you don’t grow a sweet cutout ball to your centre , and he draws and passes to your winger to walk over , that’s the centre’s try assist. But who really assisted the try ? Ice hockey has this sorted , if you’re the bloke who set it up you get an assist doesn’t matter if it needed a link man to get the score . No one gave a crap about try assists until like 5 years ago . It’s hardly an advanced metric stat.
I have to correct you on that one. Try assists in the NRL are actually given to the person who most contributed to the try being scored. This change occurred at least 5 years ago. In your example above the halfback would receive the “try assist” today, but separately the centre is awarded a “last pass assist”...The “last pass assist” isn’t mentioned or listed in tv coverage stats, but it’s provided to NRL coaches and I think it may even be a seperate stat that contributes to super coach scores (worth less than a try assist).
