The Bali 9

The only point I will make on this whole saga is,if Indonesia was so adement about the death penalty for drug traficcing..why not execute them within say twelve months of being found guilty of the said offence…why incarserate them and then shoot them 10 years down the track.....I know people will say,but they have to appeal etc,if Indonesia is so stringent then there is no need to appeal...if your guilty then you are executed....this apparently is their tough stance and their law....BARBARIC in my opinion, but it is their law....

Barbaric is the life lead by heroin addicts. What they go through on a daily basis in order to feed their addiction.

I agree with TrueTiger, the worst thing about the whole issue is the dragging out of the executions.

To give these two blokes the false hope, time for them to legitimately rehabilitate only to pull the trigger ten years down the track is a torture worse than death itself, and inhumane.

i havent followed it from the start but what i know of it so far is: they tried to smuggle drugs into indonesia and indonesia has a death penalty so they're being executed? is that the gist of it?

It really depends on what people think the purpose of gaoling someone is.,

Punishment or
Rehabilitation

I'm in the rehabilitation camp.

Things like the death penalty and life without parole are just copouts by a society that doesn't want to deal with the fundamental underlying issues.

This article puts it all into perspective for me.

It paints a a nasty picture and yes I agree they were mixed up in some really bad stuff, but I just do not believe in the death sentence. It just seems so pointless, although I understand how Indonesia must feel when another country starts to question their laws

This was not the first time these grubs did this ..so plying there trade of death as they did was OK. . For them to murder poor unfortunate souls that were addicted to the drugs they peddled. I believe in the death penalty for these two as they dished out the death penalty for many for PROFIT . Our society has gone soft as , the only candle I would light would be a flame thrower .The drug trade is evil!!

I believe gaoling is a combination of the two. You pay your dues for the wrongs you inflict on the community and make restitution to be a better person while you serve out your time. I have no problem with life without parole. I sure as hell wouldn't like to see Martin Bryant or the Travers brothers out on the street.

Like I said I don't support the death penalty in practice, and the only thing worse than executing these men is the fact they're going to shoot them well after the fact, when they've been given ten years to reflect and try to be better people.

Snake, dont get me wrong I certainly have no time for drug dealers, their acts were wrong and have been found guilty as such….my argument is,if the Indonesian govt are so hellbent on executing these offenders, then why wait ten years..they should have been shot nine years ago if the Indonesians were fair dinkum about their laws...

As has been noted their Lawyer couldnt come up with the money for a lighter sentence at the time...

really says a lot about the laws in their country....money speaks all languages especially in a corrupt Govt...

I have no problem with them getting executed. That's their law, they did the crime now they have to abide by their rules. The thing that I have a problem with is the Indonesian government's holier than thou approach in the media. "We will not be bullied or swayed by Australia" yet when it comes to their own nationals, they have begged, pleaded and paid money for their own not to be executed in various parts of the world. I hate that Tony Abbot and Julie Bishop are kissing their arses so they dont come across as being offensive towards the Indonesian government. Screw them! If I were in Abbott's shoes I'd say, "go ahead and execute them but I'll guarantee you'll never see another dollar in donations, grants or aides from us." I bet then these scum bags will get clemency.

I do not agree about the way Indonesia are prolonging this , these two guys are being used as a political tool to ease tensions and to cement in there general population minds that new President is strong and determined, it is so unfortunate that this is happening don't think for a moment that the average Indonesian are not enjoying this seeing two Australians being executed!
Mr Abbott has no option but to suck up and pander to these people ,when you have 300 million not more than a short boat ride away what can you do but be diplomatic..

These guys have been on death row for 10 yrs. Why is it only now people care? Why is it only now that the Government are supposedly pulling out all the stops? Where has everyone been the last 10 yrs?

Because it is news again now.
It was big news when they were caught, convicted and sentenced but then capital punishment in most countries takes many, many years to eventuate. So it became stale news, only friends and relatives cared.

Now they are close to being executed it is big news again.

And 2 weeks after their executed no one will care again.

Idk who Bishop and Abbott are telling another nation of how they will be perceived by other nations by carrying out their laws. Imagine the response if we were told that.

You think Australian would take to the street? or just call talkback radio and forget it within 2 weeks?

We would all be told to meet at a pub and then everyone would get pissed and forget about it

With Abbott in charge it would be a pub with no beer!

The Mufti of Australia Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, has flown over to Indonesia earlier this month to plea for the Bali 9 duo to be spared from the death penalty.

He is a much better advocate to speak with Muslim officials over there than our laughable Australian politicians who are a joke to the world with how they treat asylum seekers.

I can only assume that most would think life behind bars would be a fair call on the duo, but unfortunately someone needs to pay the bills to keep them locked up.
