The beginning of the end for the Titans??

The Titans are struggling financially.

The dont have a hardcore fan base, and the Gold Coast has transient population, it is unlikely they will ever gain a hard core base.

This bad publicity has to hurt them with the already tough fight to gain sponsorship.

There has always been the attititude that footballers in the Gold coast find themselves on the party strip more than they should.

When they came in they selected a lot of older guys who were past the p[arty stage and very clean cut, they even had a rule that they were allowed past some point of the strip (I think as ridiculous as it sounds a bus stop was the marker) It worked for a while.

But lets face it, young men, with excess time and excess cash flow on the gold coast is perhaps more temptation than you would like!

Losing these guys, from a squad that looked weak to me in the first place, is likely to see them really struggle, which could see the limited fans and sponsors move away to other things.

As said as it is, this saga could be enough to put them past the point of no return.

I wouldnt be surprised to see them relocated within 5 years….

They could be relocated inside Queensland, I was actually thinking maybe central QLD, Rockhampton ish perhaps, seems to be money there, they would probably have a more committed fan base reasonably quickly.

Please no.

Anyway, the NRL won't move them. They have to stay and combat the AFL. It wouldn't surprise me if the NRL actually helped Foran out to get him there as the leagues pinup boy now

I suspect the NRL would tip endless amounts of cash into the Titans before they let them fail

Jeez they've even lent us a few bob and we're a bottom rung Sydney team

Quote Goose "I wouldnt be surprised to see them relocated within 5 years…."
Wasn't Marwan Koukash looking at the possibility of moving Titans to Brissy?

The only way sporting franchises will be successful in the Gold Coast is if the sporting body pours endless amounts of cash propping up the club.

The Coast does not have the commercial clout of a major capital city to sponsor/support a club.

what a well written post Goose. thanks.

it made me think "well, maybe thats why there are no sports teams in las vegas?!"…

its certainly been a dramatic fall from grace for the titans. i remember when they were a really good team. maybe recruiting a tool like Bird wasnt the best strategy for them?! god hes an indiot.... and im guessing dave taylor isnt the brains behind the whole thing!

the brand has been tarnished, but there have been a lot of scandals in the nrl and time does heal all wounds. having said that, the important factor as mentioned is the possible lack of sustainability of a club on the gold coast; there sure have been a lot of sports clubs have fleeting lives there hasnt there?!

i think alexaki hit the nail on the head and the proof is there by the fact that the GC Suns seem to be doing okay. but then factors such as private ownership (if anyone like koukash even wants them?) and whether or not it is really that necessary for the nrl to have a team on the gold coast will come into play.

it will be interesting to see how it plays out, but i would guess they will just weather the storm and in a year or so this will all just be in the past.

I agree , not only that .. Not one club has succeeded on the Gold Coast . Who cares if the AFL get a strong hold on the Gold Coast let them have it .

Tell the Gold Coast Suns that… They are KILLING it up here.

I think that proves alexaki's point. The AFL have propped them and GWS big time !

It may well be the finish or the end of The Gold Coast Titans Franchise like the Chargers Giants an Seagulls before them…...but Smith has been on record numerous times saying how important the area is for the NRL and it's strategic plan.....

They will just reload the deck chairs on the Titanic...

TITANic…excellent!

Maybe keeping them as the titans but pushing them inland to say Ipswich/toowoomba or further north to Sunshine Coast/ rockhampton.

the club cant keep them locked up .this could happen to any club some players are BRAIN DEAD how many chances do they get sorry 2 strikes and your out .you could give 6 chances and it wouldn't be enough and you notice most are great players

Well I know that I was thrilled when that were re-admitted (after 3 false starts) and took 2 of the Tigers best with them.

All the best Titans - You reap what you sow!

I think they should be located to an area that really appreciates our game, there have been too many teams in all forms of sport fail since most games went fully professional, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer even AFL, the Brisbane Bears were based at Cararra before they morphed into the Brisbane Lions with their merger with Fitzroy.
While there have been many Incantations of the Rugby League version on the Gold Coast this should be taken into perspective, the Original Giants version were thrown together at the last moment and failed to recruit well.
The Seagulls club saw something in the franchise and for 5 seasons made a 'sort' of success of it before the debt of the Leagues Club saw them reluctantly relinquish the franchise, with the looming Super League war the ARL circumvented private ownership by some loony named Jeff who wanted to re-name them the Gladiators.
When the ARL stepped in they re-located them to Cararra, re-named them the Chargers and formed a pool of ARL contracted players to form the basis of the Chargers, finally the Gold Coast gained a team worthy of a side and with players like Martin Bella, Wes Patten, Jamie Goddard etc they transformed into a popular and reasonably competitive side.
However at the completion of the Hostilities the Chargers were sacrificed for the peace of the game, along with the Adelaide Rams the Chargers were collaterrol damage and faded into the memory banks, all along they had around a million in the bank set aside for future re-instation and in the intervening 10 years one cash starved club were able to borrow some of that money to win a Premiership.
In hindsight perhaps the NRL didn't follow due diligence in awarding the new Gold Coast franchise to Michael Searle but the first couple of seasons were spectacular with the side having a new Stadium built for them and making the finals for 3 or so years.
So now we have the situation where a small minority of players being arrested on drug charges where the media can't wait to reveal their names while in AFLland their protected players have really have to stuff up big time before they are outed, who did Karmichael play for before being busted and when the offences occurred.
If the ALF franchise in the Suns had to pay their own way how long would they last on the coast, five years ago the 60 Minutes program featured Clive Palmer who had formed a A-League franchise that was going to be the benchmark in Australian sport, well we all know how well that turned out.
Realistically let the Titans move some where that 'wants' them and let the AFL continue to pour wasted money into the Coast, money that could be spent on supporting Grass Roots rather than propping up the contract of SOG!.

Good riddance…
? They have fans ?

Apparently. I remember their first yr in 07 at Cambo, i was sitting next to a guy decked out in Titans gear. While i didn't have a clue who he was, or where he was from, i did take a stab by assuming that it was pretty odd considering that they were less than a yr old at that point.
