It's sad but it happens.

Last night confirms that this cleanout cant come soon enough. I would be shopping Lui around to the three QLD franchises quick smart, he just hasn't developed and is now becoming a major liability in defence. Sterlo picked up on it within the first ten minutes

Excellent post and making a lot of sense.

The only thing that I would remind people about is the current salary cap. The clean-out will be much needed and I think it is not too far overdue. Last year was the nadir year for this current group of players. Sheens knows that, as a group, they aren't going any further. This year is proof of that - yeah, I know there have been a lot of injuries but this team doesn't look like winning too many anymore.

Back to the salary cap - we have all heard that Blair has been demanding $500K a season but most on here would realise that most of this will be from third party agreements. My guess he will be on ~$350K from the club. Now add Blair to the list of other star performers (Benji, Farah, Ellis, Lote, Lawrence et al) and you get some idea that mid-range players need to be off loaded. Logically, for each of the star performers in the team there must be an equal amount or better of low salary cappers. That's where the juniors coming through play their part - up until they really show their stuff then we have giant salary cap problems again to keep them.

Wayne Bennett, if he was Tigers coach, would get rid of many more than have been publicised. He does not tolerate poor attitude and wants players that will "bust a gut" for him. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of those either.

Tim Simona needs to bulk up IMO, after watching the recent efforts of Paul Gallen I wonder if there has ever been an approach to him, he hasn't always been happy at the Sharks and you know their prospects!.

Totally agree Alf, good to hear a realistic voice on the forum with a common sense approach. The time has come, the team is comfortable and stale and the performances are just not there. Our juniors coming through at the moment are better then that of our last crop and i'm sure we will see their names popping up consistently in first grade in the coming years. Coupled with the signing of Blair and the possibility of a fresh fullback from up North and things aren't as bad at people are making out on here. Sure we are losing but that is with the squad we have had for years, shake it up with some new faces and watch how quickly performances will change.

I have a mate who grew up in griffith who knows the fifita brothers and a few others and told me last night that lui is going to the broncos, all I said was yeee haaa

Looks like a few of our forum members better dust the boots off 😱pen_mouth: Who is actually signed for next season that will remain signed

My view of Mr Sheen runs along the same lines as that of Balmain Bug, but one thing I won't knock him for is trying to clear the decks to build a stronger squad.
Sure opinions vary as to the relative strengths and weaknesses of those let go and potentially bought, and he may get the mix wrong (Hodgo, Prince, Lote, Ellis Vs Morris, Cayless, etc),and it may disrupt the current season. But at the end of the day, even if only one or two players are marched, the way social media (and traditional media for that matter) is today, stories and rumours of disharmony will abound.
I would of thought players leaving next season or looking for a club would be busting a gut to make the most of this year, it could be their best shot at a title with their mates.

that's what I would have thought too, that they'd be going out of their way to try to prove the club was making the wrong decisions about moving players on and the best way to do that was to actually make a go of the remaining year.

I have a feeling that the clean out is a result of the injuries we have/had this year and the staff have thought well were gone this year so the time is now for changes for next year and beyond

Happy, I was a handy utility in my time a la beau ryan but I won't be dusting off the boots just yet. I am happy to sit behind my keyboard and critque from the safety of my lounge room

Could be

1\. Mullaney/Tedesco/Moltzen IDK
2\. Lote
3\. Aysh
4\. Lawrence
5\. Ryan/Koriboete(sorry), Tagive
6\. Benj
7\. Miller/Lui
8\. Gal
9\. Farah
10\. Woods
11\. Blair
12\. Ellis
13\. Fulton (ball playing lock)

14\. Heighno
15\. Dwyer
16\. Begovich/ Roqica/ Groat/ BMM
17\. some back

I like the 1-17 and with the inclusion of Blair, we will have one of the best 1-17, I'm sure
BUTTTTTT
depth. big big big problem. esp. injuries this year…

I have stayed pretty up beat during the season. I thought the win against the Warriors was the one that turned our season. However we continue to look a disjointed rabble for the most part with senior players playing below standard.

The next 9 games will determine whether the clean out is justified or not. I still think there is some life there somewhere, although we are running out of games fast to get it together. Against Parramatta we might have Tuqiri, Lawrence, Utai, Marshall and Payten back. Problem is these guys might need 2-3 weeks to find their feet. If we keep trading wins and losses our season is as good as over.

If they play for each other - they are capable of beating ANY team in the comp.
However, if they play like they are playing for individual contracts for next year - forget it start planning for 2012\. These guys have to be mature enough to think longer term not short term and do the best for EACH other this year !

The team that was just edged out by St George in what turned out to be the real grand final last year is capable of beating anybody. If the refs had had the guts to blow the two obvious penalties we should have received in the last ten minutes of that game we probably would have won.

That team has not taken the field yet this year due to injuries. A simple fact. That's the main reason why we sit where we do on the table.

If this is the great planned 'clean-out' can someone explain why management extended the contracts of Gibbs, Fulton and Heighington earlier this year? What has changed since then?

I think Robbie isn't playin well is because he is carrying that injury let him have surgery in the off season and I'm sure next year he will be a brand new player

Good post Alf. And some good replies. These guys we are letting go have had an opportunity (some 5+ years). Yes we won the GF, but we had players like O'neill, skando and hodgo who need to be paid alot of cred for that year. Since then we've made the finals once. The players have no one else to blame but themselves. Win more games and theirs no need for a mass clean out. Perform the way we have and it's justified IMO.

What sheens is doing I hope will make the team better in the years to come. He has signed the core of the team that is hard to replace (centers, 5/8, dummy half, and 2 quality forwards in Ellis and Galloway and wingers in utai and tuqiri). Add a Blair and some junior forwards that we have coming through and we have a good team if we can find a quality FB and half back.

Some fresh faces is what we need.

I would just like to see our full strength team on the paddock and soon. I feel sorry for the injured players and the kids being thrown into first grade. Maybe, as others have stated previously, there is other problems in the camp or factions, disharmony, something like that.
