The new and improved Lote thread

Hi All,

I have been thinking about this lots since Lote signed. What is our strongest backline?
We have a tonne of talent and for once we have flexibilty which enables alot of position re-shuffles.
Here is the best BACKLINE I can come up with - please take into consideration that I am presuming all players are fit!

1.Tuqiri
2.Tuiaki
3.Ayshford
4.Lawrence
5.Ryan
6.Marshall
7.Moltzen

The only position that I am not confident with is Lawrence's centre pair. Ayshford has shown plenty of promise but
lacks the bulkiness and is a little suspect in defence. Who is an alternative???

Keen to see what you can come up with.

Gotta disagree. Ayshford had alot to do with our late season turn around. Everyone talks up Moltzen during that period but all of a sudden our defefense sured up with him out there. He's not too small, he is going to be a big man. I was highly impressed with is development during that time. He's come along quicker then Lawrence did and is 10 time s better then Collis.
I hope this one position/ player Sheens doesn't toy with. Personally I get the impression Sheens is very content with Ayshford in the centres.

Ryan I though was our weakest position, bar Morris. I just don't rate him all that much but I do concur his back end of the season was much better and I'll give him the benfit of the doubt at the start of 2010\. I've gotta say it would be hard with changing centres inside him and Collis made him look bad in defence many times. No suprise he looked better with Ayshford inside him.

On topic though, yep very excited about Lote. I hadn't thought about the Leichardt games where it will be like a real home game for him. Looking forward to him playing wing in Tuiaki's place, then Ryans when Tui returns.

I agree with that Tooth. Ayshford looks the goods and IMO will end up being one of those deceptive players where they look slow but are surprisingly quick and always gets the job done. That can be a dangerous weapon when u have his size and his natural strength. The only thing i really want him to work on is his passing from left to right. If he fixes that up he has has the complete package to fill the right centre spot.

Hi everyone

While I don't think that more fans will "step up" because Lote is with us, I do think that his presence will boost the crowds significantly. I sure hope so.

Can't wait to see his first game.

Welcome Lote!!

Super Beau I think you were wrong about Nightingale. I am pretty sure he already played for the Kiwis in 2008 (before Big Dell came to St. George Illawarra).

Could be a great back-line but I am just as excited about our forward pack.

Ayshford remids a little of Matt King. Rangy and just unassuming. I think he will be under-rated for a long time but I think his defence was top notch. His just a goood footy player like Moltzen.

I have been silenced!
Hoping Ayshford can produce what he is capable of!
Love the positivity in this forum, sense a Big Buzz around the club and it's fans.
Whether it is Lote, Galloway, OR the everpresents Marshall and Farah we really have alot to look forward too this season. Smoking Backline, Hard Forwards with attacking flair (offloads) and a Krazy fan base.
I love this club!

Round 1 target for Tuqiri

Star Wests Tigers recruit Lote Tuqiri could make his NRL return in the club's season-opener against Manly on March 15, CEO Stephen Humphreys has revealed.

The dual international, who was shown the door by the Australian Rugby Union in June following an undisclosed disciplinary breach, signed a three-year-deal with the joint-venture club last month.

The former Bronco is currently contracted to England-based rugby union club Leicester Tigers until the end of March, meaning he may not be available until Round 4.

But the Tigers remain hopeful of striking a deal that would see the 30-year-old return for the start of the NRL season.

"The situation with Lote is that we're expecting him at the end of March. He's contracted to Leicester Tigers in the UK until the end of March," Humphreys told Sportal on Tuesday.

"We have opened some dialogue with Leicester about the possibility of them letting him a couple of weeks early which would enable Lote to be back here for the beginning of our season."

"Really that ball is in Leicester's court, we expect to hear back from them early this week about the possibility of an early release, but the way we're planning it at the moment is it'll be the end of March and anything else will be a bonus."

Tigers skipper Robbie Farah endorsed the decision to sign Tuqiri and expects the former Queensland and Kangaroos star to make an immediate impact upon his return.

"Hopefully about 30 tries would be nice," Farah said when asked what Tuqiri will add to an already impressive Tigers squad.

"He's going to be a player who will add a great deal to us whether it be on the wing or at full-back."

"Every time he touches the ball he's going to be a player that is going to excite the fans and create headaches for the opposition."

"He's achieved a lot in both codes and is a player we're all excited about having, so I definitely can't wait to get him here."

Meanwhile, Tigers mentor Tim Sheens and Roosters coach Brian Smith both named near full-strength sides for Sunday's Foundation Cup clash at the SFS.

Round 1 sounds like it could be a bit optimistic, but if we could get Lote on the field before round 4, then that would be a bonus.

Channel 10 Sport just re-iterated the above post from Granto87\. Showed some brief footage of Lote playing in the UK and showed Humphreys briefly, along with Farah and Sheens promoting the Foundation Cup.

Yeah, anytime before the end of march would be fantastic. Like Sheens has said, as it stands, he might be AVAILABLE to play in round 4, but he probably wont.. it'll take time for him to settle in, meet the boys, learn the plays etc, etc. So obviously, the earlier the better.
