With the sad passing of Gary Leo, I though that a story I heard surrounding the famous 1969 GF win by Balmain against a short 'odds-on' favourite in South Sydney, was probably worthy of a re-telling. As many of you probably know, the Balmain coach - Leo Nosworthy - had a plan to disrupt the Souths game by having his players go down 'injured' whenever Souths threatened to get on a roll. (Back in those days, and injury automatically resulted in a time off being blown).
The game plan worked to perfection for the first half. Whenever Souths started to build momentum, a Balmain player would cop an 'injury' and the momentum was halted.
As the players were returning to the field for the second half, and before the ball was kicked off, one of the Balmain youngsters, I think it may have been Keith Outten went down with a cramp. As one of the more senior players ran passed him, he looked down and yelled "not yet you idiot".
Classic!
