If he can get the mistakes out of his game he could be great. One of our only props to consistently bend the line over the past few years.

I get the Tony Williams' about this guy...contract year will play his guts out, and sign with the dolphins on bigger money than he deserves

Nah. Least Tony Williams had one or two years of being an unstoppable beast. Mikaele isn’t that type.

true....he was massive those two years

I think Tony Williams commanded more money didn't he, something tells me that no matter how well he goes this year his next contract won't be that big will it?
I think if he can shrug off that pillow syndrome he would be a good depth signing who knows WT system.

His mistakes per handle were actually much better then people think last year. Well ahead of a lot of our other forwards. Its just that he has a reputation from previous year.

yeah, but they were memorable... that sticks in people's minds.

Hopefully Stef can pull him up

He could be a great prop partner to Stef but just seems to lack the smarts, as do quite a few of our guys. If he can just focus on the basics for around 40 mins of a game (in two stints) - run really hard, tackle really hard, hold the ball in two hands, no mistakes. I think if he could do that he’s worth another 2 years.

He could be a great prop, but just seems to lack the smarts. ... 🙁

If you don't have the smarts to be a Prop, You might struggle to be a Traffic controller... "green is Go.. Red is.... ??". Bryce Gibbs anyone?

That being said, we knew from Aaron Woods days that when he had a simple task and a simple game plan he did a lot better. That basic focus, that putting effort into the perfect tackle technique to explain:

A friend was cutting lawn with a bushknife. It is easy to tire out quickly doing this. But if you perfect the angle and perfect the timing you can cut your lawn in under 2 hours.

That perfect angle, perfect stroke... Meh give the guy a Bushknife and see if our defense is still soft!

We could use some of Bryce Gibbs 'smarts' in Defence...

Liam Fulton's work ethic definitely. Bryce too put in the hard yards, but far out he made mistakes the last year he was with us. I remember a few games were people were calling for him and sometimes Fifita to leave the field.

Thinking back on it, I think Bryce was tired out. Near the 60 minute mark he would get simple stuff wrong. Sure he always put 110% but when you drop the ball and give away possession you can't stay. I was sad that he ended his rugby league career as a benchwarmer for Cronulla, but you could see why.

Gibbs led our defensive speed and brought the line with him. Worked hard whether as an A defender or from marker and even in cover defence. WT got the best out of him before chronic injury slowed him down.

We desperately need a forward on each side of the field to consistently show some leg speed in defence and drag those alongside with them. Looking second rate to most teams in that area the past few years.

Yeah, won't hear a bad word about Gibbs, always gave the lot for us.

And what a defender with his round the waist tackles bringing guys down. Was it 2010 when he was credited with nearly 400 tackles consecutively without missing one! And what about the try saver on Gasnier in the PF!.

Gee, we could use a forward like that.

Just needs a few extra smarts with his forward play. Never takes a backward step.

It's amazing how a new coach, assistant coach or mentor like sheens or even a training partner can unlock a players ability.
It's been often said in this forum that he's like a teddy bear and I get that.
However Cayless, Sheens or even someone like Peachey, who likes a chat, can get into ear and extract what we want to see, a big forward smashing into the defence.
Sometimes this mentor can be the most unlikeliest person.
A good ball player, hopefully Jackson Hastings, can give players like Thomas more confidence if the passes are crisp and has him running into gaps, bringing him onto the ball properly.
Any hesitation or doubt from the ballplayer or the runner often leads to drop balls or soft results.
Last year our players in motion looked like chooks running around with their heads chooped off.
I hope he unlocks his true potential this year to give the likes of Stefano a hand and lands another contract.

Totally agree with you mate, we seem to just sit back, resting on our heels waiting for the opposition to take the initiative.
Gibbs and Fulton were my two of my fav players.
They had so much energy both on and off the field.
Their pranks were hilarious and you could feel the positive vibes surrounding the joint when they were around.
We need to bond and back each other in D, support play, kick and chase, line speed etc
When you refer to the team playing as one it usually means the way the team reacts together, going up in a straight line, reacting to a break or a shift etc.
'You snooze you lose' as they say.
Since Papas signing, Ive been digging up his highlights and I've noticed how much energy
the guy has on the field.
I'm sure the team will feed off that next year.
For this year I think we'll be
pleasantly surprised by the energy, talk and direction that Peach and Jackson will provide.

Gibbs was a mistake ridden penalty machine basically his whole career...
Loved him.
Squeezed absolutely every drop out of himself for us...
Was never going to be the worlds best player - But was my favourite all the same.
