Its doom and gloom just looking at that squad.Would appear to be one of the weakest squads in the comp.We are going to need a massive amount of luck with injuries and more than a few to really lift a notch or two.We have not improved our 2nd row and that is very concerning.
As always hope springs eternal

Of course that's it. We have no money.
Next year we have some really hard choices to make because the young guys all come off contract. I guess that's why we kept littlejohn.

Yes - I think keeping Littlejohn was a good move -regardless if Brooks goes or not.

When they say the full time extended NRL squad, is that the 25 man squad proper, and we won't have to use the second tier cap to play them?

Top 25 is for salary cap purposes ..it is genually the top 25 paid players in your squad and what needs to be lodged with the NRL at the beginning of a season early Feb…it is also fluid throught the season like Taylor signing mid-year comes into the 25 and Fine goes out as an example...the 2nd tier cap is used up when you play players outside your Top 25 nominated Sqaud in a season..

All Clubs have extended NRL training Squads...just as Most Clubs use more than 25 players in a season...

I thought it WAS simply the players the Club had on contract under the NRL, who were to receive the highest 25 salaries for the year.

Good-o, this puts a line through most of the outstanding "what's happening with X" questions.

I'm happy with the choices, they are keeping decent quality backups and letting the not-quites move on.

There are quite a few comments about the quality of the signings/extensions and thus overall squad being weak, but honestly I think we have a roster that can become a good side. Right now it's not a good side, but any given match it can be, it's just about getting consistent output from all players, then turning a few average first-graders into quality first-graders.

I feel the management are doing the right things without rushing it, to develop an increasingly competitive team. We are weak in a few positions, but frankly when you have money tied up in a guy like Tedesco, you are going to have to have a Justin Hunt-type as backup. He's got plenty of experience and for a backup is not bad - better I think when compared with previous options like Kurtis Rowe, Sean Meaney, Mighty Mouse.

Same with Littlejohn, he's obviously happy enough to toil away as a backup, and because he's fairly big, he's not a really weak link to play in firsts, just lacks some of that flair and I wouldn't say much of a tactical kicker.

So I see this pattern of having quite seasoned, fairly strong / sizeable backups to call on in NSW Cup, not just has-beens and kids. Even the likes of Eisenhuth and Lolo - I've not seen a lot of them, people say they are doing alright in ISP, so cool, let's keep them on a little while longer, whereas guys like Graham and Peni who have had a few years in the system, we know what they were capable of and clearly weren't in the plans, so let them go.

Good points and post..

Still too many names in the squad that we should be cutting loose (hopefully this is happening behind the scenes).
I appreciate that rebuilds take time, but with the way the NRL CBA is set up, we can't really afford to take 3-4 years to turn things around and hope to keep all the players we want to.

that's a pretty average squad IMO.

apart from a spine full of "potential" and woods + tedesco- nothing to fill me with confidence

first pre season in a long time that I don't feel positive.

Maybe a Reggie player or two…. No names

Its a bit concerning tbh, not much changing personnel wise... Oh well, not surprising

Hope I'm wrong , but no new backrowers means no new expectations

Bottom 8 side

Now ET is signed and the squad looks finalized, hopefully full attention can be getting the roster sorted for 2018.

We will be good to watch this year. Plenty of strike with Ted, Moses, Brooks, Nofo, Simona, Idris, Kev.
Its pretty obvious our defence will determine where we end up.

I think with Taylor at the club full time, including the offseason, this could be a breakout year for Lovett.

Player with lots of heart, maybe just needed some guidance in the finer details of the game.

I hope so. He does have heart but doesn't make the metres, not known for his offload. He is reliable in defence. IMO not a regular FG player

Lovett is a developing FG player,he may get better as the season goes on,however,he may not…it reminds me of J.Thurston, not wanted at the dogs, wasn't considered the main playmaker at the time...look how much better he did get...it all depends on the attitude of wanting to play NRL and working hard, you also need ability, hopefully Lovett can become a much better player for us...everyone deserves a chance at trying,Lovett does have heart...

Yeah TT, he was rewarded for his effort with a city guernsey this year and repaid the selectors by producing the goods on the day. The guy is not a star, but puts his head down and tries to do that which is asked of him, each and every week.

I totally agree with this, I thought Lovett performed very well in the C/C game last year, shame for him there won't be another opportunity now, but actually I thought he stepped up to another level which is what you want in a rep game.

Someone like Siro Jr, picked for about 3 (?) C/Cs in a row and did not much at all, not specifically anything wrong, but just nothing standout, whereas I thought Lovett was somewhat of a standout, not just because I have low expectations, but because he outplayed players who I feel are much more talented.

Lovett might be one of those guys who can excel in a good side, that the overall quality of the team can take him to a higher level, because he does try so hard and that level of competitiveness really shines when the rest of the team are doing their job.

Lovett could truly go from one of those Nathan Milone (the new Fitzhenry) types, where you say "what on Earth does the club see in this guy?", to "I see it now, I see what they see". Then he would become a real legend of the club, someone with average skill, average size, but with the work ethic to make an impact. People really respect those kinds of footballers.

I always like to remember how Wayne Pearce, my all-time favourite footballer, truly did not have stand-out skills, wasn't flashy, wasn't that fast, was not blessed with large chunks of injury-free time, wasn't an attacking tyro. But he was the first of a new type of professional footballer, equally dedicated on and off field, more or less cleanskin, emphasised diet and application… his professionalism, toughness and competitiveness led him to becoming Australian captain.

Now for all that gushing, Lovett isn't anywhere on that plane of existence, but he is an unashamed trier and I respect that. And don't get me wrong, I used to loathe the guy, I would have torn up his contract a few seasons ago if I was in charge.

Bottom 8 side

Agree with the 'bottom 8' statement but I don't think we will be a bottom 4 side - unless we have injuries to key players.

I think we will be mid-table.

I was impressed with Moses this year. Tedesco gets better every year. ET did make a difference when he joined. Idris may surprise but we needed a big body out there. All this and if Brooks can be better and the injury gods look upon us favourably we will surprise a lot of people.

I always look forward to a new year.

I rejoined again because I can see things are getting better off field. Wifey didn't want to join again though.
