What a bummer: Skandalis battling to play part in finals Glenn Jackson
August 30, 2010

SHOULD Wests Tigers front-rower John Skandalis's career end on what has been somewhat crassly termed a torn arse, it would be an ignominious end for the last of the surviving Western Suburbs Magpies. Quite besides the nature of the injury, it would rob the prop of a 250th appearance for the Magpies and their reincarnation, the Tigers.

Anchored on 249 matches, Skandalis will certainly miss Friday night's clash with Gold Coast and his immediate playing future beyond that is also in doubt, due to the injury which is, officially, a torn glute. But given Skandalis wasn't supposed to play this season, having retired for the second time after a comeback last year, he wasn't too fazed about his predicament last night.

''Day by day,'' Skandalis offered. ''I can't really tell you. If that's the end, that's the way it goes. I wasn't even supposed to play this year. I was only filling in for a few guys that were injured. That's the way it is.

''I'm not really sure how serious it is. They haven't really given me a time frame - I don't think many people do them.

''But I'll be trying to do my best to try and get back, not only for the 250, but to support the team.''

The feeling was hardly mutual after the game. His teammates and even coach Tim Sheens were hardly in the supportive category, leaving the 34-year-old the, ahem, butt of all jokes in the aftermath of yesterday's victory against Melbourne. ''It's a buttock [injury],'' Sheens mused. ''A nice way to say he tore his arse.''

But there was a serious side amid the good humour. Skandalis had only dusted off his boots to help the Tigers through an injury crisis and now the hired help is falling. Yesterday's result might have secured Wests Tigers a home final, but it might also have dented their chances of progressing much further than that.

Centre Chris Lawrence, the side's equal leading try scorer, suffered a broken jaw - his was the worst of a long injury toll that left the Tigers with no players on the interchange bench by the end of the match.

''If we're still there in a month, he'll be back,'' Sheens said. ''I'd like to hope the boys play well enough to give him another opportunity.''

''He's a quality player and we feel for him,'' hooker Robbie Farah said. ''But second spot's there for us if we want it and if we win our first semi we get a week off. I'm sure he'll be back by then. It's just up to us to be there long enough to get back.''

Lawrence, who was struck by Melbourne prop Jeff Lima in the first half, faces a month on the sidelines, while Skandalis may be forced out for up to three weeks. Fullback Wade McKinnon suffered a recurrence of his hamstring problems, although the coaching staff were hopeful that, given he had a twinge rather than a strain or a tear, will be back for the first weekend of the finals.

English second-rower Gareth Ellis suffered a calf injury and is in doubt for Friday's match. Knowing the club was already without prop Bryce Gibbs (knee) and back-rower Liam Fulton (calf), Sheens said: ''That's a pretty fair injury list.''

What the Tigers do have is a fair reserves list as well. Mitch Brown and Geoff Daniela, both of whom have significant first-grade experience from this season, will vie for Lawrence's centre spot. ''It's amazing how if you keep your head down and you're going well, sometimes you find yourself in a semi-final team,'' Sheens said. ''That's what's probably going to happen.''

I hope the team is still alive in a month so we can have our best team back on the paddock. Chris' injury is a concern hopefully he is a quick healer. Skando is another loss as are the rest of the injury list. I'm sure we will still put a strong team on the field on Friday night as we have good depth this year. The Titans won't be easy though they will be out for revenge from the game a few rounds ago when we beat them.

and that's one things I was afraid of when the whole Storm cheating the cap came out, that we end up losing players through injury playing against them….obviously there's a fair chance they may have still been injured, but who knows how different the game would have been if they had been forced to shed players when the scandal hit.

Anyway, we have some good replacements for Chris at least and hopefully we have the right people to come up into the forwards.

ouch… Never known of a player to tear one of these?!

I suppose now he will have to make sure he does his Butt Flex's before every game...

There is no update on the tigers website on Junior Moors injury. Does anyone know what the story is?

hopefully if ellis is out it gives dwyer the opportunity to take on an ellis type role of dominating in attack and defence.

The exact nature of the injury is still a bit of a mystery. It looked like a leg injury of some sort, but no official word from the club has been a bit puzzling. He is part of the top 25 so I don't know what's happened for the club to go "dark" on Moors all of a sudden.

Maybe that weird device Mad Dog uses would have helped!
