Tigers Lui eyes Cowboys return

His problem is his speed, he's too slow and has ZERO change in pace and direction. As soon as our defence slides, its over for him. He defends flat footed and is constantly caught of balance when trying to make a tackle… hence the constant arm grabbing..

He has his deficiencies for sure, but the way this forum gives it to him is way over the top. Every year they have their punching bag and this year its Lui.

I think he is worth persevering with and will develop into a very strong no7, but I could be wrong.

No convincing some supercoach. They only see what they want to see. Lui has defensive issues, no doubting it whatsoever, he misses far too many tackles. But he's 21 and the defensive issues are nothing that cannot be fixed with hard work. Far easier to fix someone's defensive issues than making them into a decent ball player which Lui already is.

Fair call. I am not a fan of him obviously, and I would be more than happy if at the end of this year or next he proves me wrong. Signing Utai proved me wrong as I thought it was an absolute complete toss up, but he has been a pretty solid guy. And at the end of the day, who am I anyway? No one important, but just sharing an observation.

Ultimately if he was playing reasonable or his defense sound, people like me would not comment. I am usually very positive to lots of our team but if someone puts themselves in the game which is sport and entertainment, they leave themselves open for criticism if they don't succeed or accolades if they do.

I think it is fair to say that Lui will return to a Qld team soon, either this year or next or maybe even 2 years from now. His family is there, he grew up there, his wife is begging to go home. I just think putting in a lot of work for the next 18 months will be to the benefit of some other team. Lets work on our own product which is at very least capable. If we had nothing locally, I could understand it.

Interesting what joey said on the Sunday footy show about halves coming into grade need to defend well and then work on the rest of the game… contradicts the point of view I often hear and read

Swordy just out of interest how do you know that luis missus is begging to go home to qld?
Not meaning anything by it but I have heard nothing about either lui or his partner not liking Sydney.

and you know all this for a fact?
i think its more that your hoping that thats the case
please don't let your agenda get in the way of the truth
:deadhorse:

Guys. No agenda here, just an opinion. Throwing it out there for discussion.

Just the presumption that would be the case so if it isn't, of course I apologise unreservedly. I guess I'm thinking like most others would in a work situation. You would ideally be closer to family and friends. Rarely do players spend their entire career elsewhere. Growing up in Sydney and playing in any Sydney team is OK, but moving a long way doesn't often work long term. Petero is a good example of that recently. That's my line of thinking anyway.

Anyway, I've had my say on the topic. Best I move onto something else. For the Tigers, I hope he works out fine, he improves with age and gets cracking.

One thing is for sure, I'm a fat 42 year old with no talent so he is already way ahead of anything I could ever hope to be!!

Swordy, you are probably on the money re Lui heading north sooner than latter. Most people like being near friends and family, especially females. To late in the season to be mucking around with the no7 but I think he should be asked what his intention are so we can start working on Miller or who ever for 2012/2013

Mate if rumours up here are true you are on the mark He has been linked to every Qld team . Titans has been the strongest rumour so far I have heard of . Nothing wrong with being 42 champ and having a little bit of cover for the shed in acceptable

**Wests Tigers halfback Robert Lui latest Tiger to look for the exit**
>
James Hooper
From: The Sunday Telegraph
August 21, 2011 12:00AM
>
WESTS Tigers halfback Robert Lui is in line to become the latest player squeezed out of Concord after being linked to a return home to North Queensland.
>
Despite being on a contract worth $200,000 for next season, The Sunday Telegraph has learned the Tigers are considering releasing Lui as they continue to restructure their playing roster.
>
The Lui development comes two months after the Tigers were forced to confront major internal issues when a number of senior players were told they were free to look for alternative clubs for 2012.
>
Senior stars Chris Heighington, Beau Ryan and Liam Fulton were all tapped on the shoulder before sorting things out to remain at the Tigers, while utility back Tim Moltzen (St George Illawarra), props Andrew Fifita and Bryce Gibbs (Cronulla) and fullback Wade McKinnon (Hull) were allowed to leave.
>
At one point, the situation looked to have the potential to destabilise their season with talk of player unrest.
>
However, the Tigers have re-grouped after some mid-season ructions and are even pressing for a top-four spot with a favourable run home.
>
They will be looking for their sixth straight win today when they host Parramatta at the SFS.
>
Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys tried to hose down talk of Lui leaving, but The Sunday Telegraph has been assured the move has been discussed.
>
"He's under contract for next year and that's what we expect to be honoured," Humphreys said.
>
"There's been no official conversations and I don't think it's going to happen."
>
Born in Townsville, Lui and his partner Taleah Backo both have family in the region and the possibility of moving back home has been on the halfback's radar since the Tigers and Cowboys clashed in Townsville in round 19.
>
If Lui does leave, the halfback would become the fifth high-profile Tiger to be granted an early release in the past three months.
>
In the same time frame, the Tigers have signed Melbourne Storm forward Adam Blair, Eels centre Joel Reddy and Penrith prop Matthew Bell as part of a major overhaul.
>
Lui's exit would open up a pathway to the NRL for talented Toyota Cup players Jacob Miller and Curtis Sironen.
>
Cowboys chief executive Peter Jourdain and football manager Peter Parr both said they had heard the Lui rumours but at this point the halfback was under contract with the Tigers.
>
"I'm not aware of the Tigers being willing to release him or anything like that, but if they were willing to release him then I would have the appropriate conversations with Neil Henry and other people in our footy department," Parr said.
>
"I've heard the rumours.
>
"If he was to become available, or wanted to explore the options of getting back up north, then I would suggest we'd have a look at it.
>
"But as it stands at the moment, that's a hypothetical because he's under contract with the Tigers."

Shame it's happening now. If this had have happened earlier in the year we could have blooded Miller. Lui wont be here next year.

I highly doubt Lui will be gone next year.

However, why would it have affected Miller's development if it happened earlier? Miller was blooded this year and should be ready to go next year. Lui is still clearly the better option this year. Blokes like Cherry-Evans and Hodkinson did alright in the seasons they had their debut in round 1.

I don't see believe what you say regarding not being here next year.
Nothing in that article makes me feel that way either.

Sounds to me like the Telegraph has got hold of an old rumour and thinks it's current. It still amazes me that people don't grasp how that process worked earlier this season: we needed to clear $X to get Blair etc under the cap, and to do so the club identified six or seven players it would countenance releasing. They were never going to release them all. Presumably the books balance for 2012 at the moment so if anyone else goes it will be to bring in more players.

I've said this several times before, but it's not as if the club can just pick three players it wants rid of, give them bus fare to Parramatta and tie a note round their necks saying "please give me a good home (but not that good)". I'm sure there was a period where they were listening on Lui, Fulton, Heighington, Ryan and who knows how many others. But they were never going to lose all of them.

Would be a shame if he left. 2 years in a row we will make the finals with him at halfback. Success is built around strong combinations and everyone playing their role.
Miller may be our future halfback but from what i've seen this year in the top grade he is a little overwhelmed and not ready.
Hopefully this turns out to be another telegraph rumour, although the quote from Humphry's made me laugh, I remember him saying something similar about Gibbs when those "rumours" first surfaced.

Here we go again…...the rumours from the worst paper in Australia. They must be parra supporters trying to stir up something so they don't get the spoon!
Come on Tigers smash those eels a new one, especially Hindmarsh I can't stand him.
Wooden Spoon for the Eels!

'ol wishy washy humpty…..comes across as solid as a rock in this eh?

"There's been no official conversations _and I don't think_ it's going to happen."

where there's smoke there's fire…..The Adam Blair rumour circulated for months before it became official...I'd like Lui to come out with an official statement to the club and us fans!
