Wests Tigers captain James Tamou on why the Tigers need to hand Adam Doueihi the keys to the team

The Wests Tigers have been hailed Luke Brooks’ team, but Tigers captain James Tamou believes the side would be better served having five-eighth Adam Doueihi as the on-field leader to give Brooks more freedom.

Doueihi produced a stellar performance to help the Tigers snap a four-game losing stretch with a big win over St George Illawarra.

Brooks also excelled against the Dragons, even though he took a back seat in the game management.

Tamou would like to see Doueihi continue his dominant role, declaring it’s the best result for the team moving forward.

“For Adam to do that, maybe it allows Brooksy a chance to take a step back,” Tamou said ahead of Saturday’s clash against the Gold Coast at Campbelltown.

“For the halves to play their best footy, then so be it.

“I feel for Brooksy. He is doing everything he can. We’ve been hyped up and he is always there to cop it.

“He is not doing anything wrong, but for him and Adam to be at their best, it is just the way it has to be with Adam taking on the bigger role.

“Adam adds a lot more than what he looks like.

“You might see Adam walking around and he just keeps to himself, but on the training field and paddock he gives it his all.

“He is a bit more emotional.”

Tamou revealed he had given Doueihi licence to become the team’s vocal on-field leader and blast the players when he felt it was appropriate.

He insists this accountability is what the Tigers need to climb the ladder.

“We’ve had a few conversations and I’ve told him to scream at us, yell at us and blow up at us if you need to get us to where we need to get to,” he said.

“Adam seems to be the type of person to do it at the moment.

“In a few games he has just completely taken over team huddles and told us what to do.

“And I’ve taken a step back and I’ve told him that I’m happy for him to do that because the team reacts well to it.”

Tamou has high hopes for Doueihi’s future in the game as one of the NRL’s finest playmakers.

From experience, he just knows that it takes time, and hard work, to join league’s elite players.

“Nathan Cleary, who I regard as one of the best players in the game right now, it took him a while to get to where he is,” he said.

“For Adam to get to that path, you can’t just springboard him like that.

“He has got to find his own way, and this is him finding his own way.

“He is young, and you can question yourself why you are on the leadership group, but everyone knows why he is there.

“He has got that voice and when he speaks everyone listens, but he backs it up and puts his body on the line.

“He makes himself accountable, and for the team to be successful, he has to make everyone else accountable.”

Tamou nominated Doueihi’s genuine care for the Tigers club as his greatest asset – and now the rest of the team needs to follow their five-eighth’s lead.

“You can tell how much mentally that he is involved in this game and team,” Tamou said.

“He absolutely loves this team, and you can tell when we are not going so well how he walks in with a dark cloud over his head,” he said.

“That is not up to him to take all of that on. That is also up to us that carry that burden.”

Spot on. Brooks just ain't the guy to lead a team around, Doueihi is passionate and a very good player. Still so young as well, I hope we hang into him for a long long time.

I posted recently in another thread that I didn't see anything from AD that jumped out to me as leader material.

After the weekend, I was wrong.

I think he possesses those qualities on the field (don't know about training) and if it takes pressure of others and he can handle it, then so be it.

This is just code for, Brooks can't do it, so let Doueihi take it on, not a glowing endorsement form the skipper, and I agree with him 100%

Brooks' personality isn't suited to be a leader. It's not an aspersion on him. Different players have different personalities.

Doueihi has passion and determination and will make a great captain but he is still very young and has only just made the 5/8 position his own.
He needs to work on his own game first, mix it up a bit more with early ball to the centre or 2nd rower and a chip over the top or grubber in behind. He also has some room to improve in defence.

He will be a great captain in a few years, we shouldn't crush him just yet.

A captain doesn't need to be the best player on the field. His main assest would be to inspire and fire up his players on the field.

Even blind Freddy can see Doueihi is the man .
Does Tamou think he’s Sherlock Holmes now ?
And if Brooks takes anymore step backs he might as well stay home 😂

Finally someone has actually said it...Tamou may be struggling a bit on the field, but it is clear he knows what we need to do / is a leader.

Tamou can see Brooks just does not have the personality / footy IQ to lead a team. AD does...

All off season we heard it would be "Brooks' team with Marshall gone", but anyone who saw Brooksy's interviews when asked about it could tell it would not work out..."umm, yeah, ummm, yeah, I need to, ummm, take control, ummm, yeah, sort of, umm, lead them around. Yeah, ummm...".

Not knocking him, but Brooksy does not have the personality of your typical dominant 7. He is the polar opposite of a Cronk / Johns / Thurstson / most successful 7s.

Brooks is better just playing a role...run, run, run, kick for corners, back up your bigs through the middle...

Doueihi's passion and fire in the guts is plain to see. You need your captain to have that, to drive his teammates to do better and push harder.
Not many players in our team seem to have that obvious passion, if in fact any from an outsider's POV.

Hopefully Daine works on his support play as well, he will be a massive threat once he starts running in support of the big fella's ala Hodgo.

Cini showed more passion than 90% of them on Sunday.

I think he already has enough to worry about.

Yes please, make him 7 and Brooks 6 even just for mental reasons (for one of them).
They can still mix first and second receiver if needed however there is no reason Douehi can't be a 7, he can still take the line on up the middle with tiring forwards, which will engage them leaving bigger holes on the edges, better kicking game, more vocal/passionate as described

I think this is the only way we can unlock Brooks past potential

Tamou takes over from Mbye as captain of the team
Mbye is rumoured to be on the out
Douiehi takes over from Brooks as the leader on the field
And ?

Was at the game and watched AD closely (have always been interested in his development).

What stood out to me most to the point where it was visibly obvious - towards the end of the game he was sucking in the big ones, looked genuinely exhausted - but the very next play would back it up with a big break, good line speed or barking orders to take control of the set.

When we win he is always one of the most animated and when we lose he is always distressed. That is future captains material - leaving it all on the field and playing with passion for the jersey. It contagious and I know if I was a player that's who I would go to war with.
