Tigers players want to stay at Leichhardt

Wests Tigers players have made their intentions clear: We want to stay at Leichhardt.

Sunday afternoon's clash against Canberra will be the first game at the suburban venue since Balmain officially forfeited their lease late last month.

It is just one of two Wests Tigers games to be played there, with the other being their Round 13 clash against the Titans.

Beyond that, their relationship with the historic ground is up in the air. Discussions with the Leichhardt Council are ongoing, and the club's board are due to meet at the end of this month to decide on whether to now take their games elsewhere.

"It'd be very disappointing," skipper Robbie Farah said on Wednesday.

"It's no secret that I love playing there, being a local boy. The other local boys have grown up playing there for many years. It's been a part of our footy career, not only for our first grade career, but growing up as well, through our childhood.

"It would be a shame [to leave], so hopefully the club can do something to ensure we're still there for many years to come."

Five-eighth Mitchell Moses, whose uncle Ben Elias is synonymous with the famed venue, said it was his favourite ground to play at in the competition.

"I grew up playing there and it's the best ground, so close to the crowd. You can hear them when you're on the field. It's my favourite ground and if it's taken away from us it'll be pretty upsetting," he said.

"I pretty much stay out of [the boardroom talks]. But we'll be pretty upset if that's taken away from us. Hopefully it stays.

"It's always packed out… You run out looking out to that hill there, it's packed out every week no matter how the team's going. Win or lose, you know it's going to be packed out. It's just so loud, and you're so close to everything."

The Tigers will be hoping to rebound from last week's defeat in Auckland when they welcome ex-teammate Blake Austin and the Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

Austin departed Concord in search of a permanent halves position in Canberra, where he has since thrived under the coaching of Ricky Stuart.

His improvement in form hasn't reflected on the team's lowly position on the ladder, however Tigers players are certainly aware of the threat the 24-year-old poses.

"He's a good runner of the ball. He showed that in the first couple of rounds. He made a few line breaks. [But] if we stick to our structures this week, we can come away with a win," Moses said.

Farah was also quick to sing the ex-Tiger's praises.

"He's been going really well, Blake. He'd definitely be a big danger for us," Farah said.

"He loves running the ball, so for us, we have to be on our guard against him. He'll be up for a big game too against his old club.

"[They're] very similar to us, they've had some really good wins and a couple of close losses. They would've taken a lot out of the loss that they had on the weekend to Melbourne. I thought they played some good footy.

"As I said, Blake Austin's been a good addition, [Iosia] Soliola I think has been going really good for them coming back over from the Super League. It's going to be a tough game."

Didn't the club and/or the council state that the other 2 games were going ahead at Leichhardt?

The board is apparently meeting on the 30th to make a decision. I'd say they will go ahead.

It would be a slap in the face to the members if they didnt go ahead with the other 2.

Not to mention a logistical nightmare….they will play both there in 2015...after that I can see games being reduced at both Suburban Grounds....

I dare say some will hold that against the Club if the last 2 games don't go ahead at Leichardt when the time comes to renewing there Memberships for next year.

Rightly so, I know I would. Offering refunds wont be good enough.

If so,whats the bet they announce that in the off season in a media release written by a 'spokesman' ?

Unfortunatley Balmain Council has presented WTs with a perfect opportunity to solve an ongoing problem.
Until we all know the FACTS…not Byrnes facts, or Mayers facts...but the REAL facts...we dont know the costs associated with the local grounds, Im sure its not as rosy though as Byrne recently pointed out....going off other quotes over the years about the same situation from other CEOs

The NRL is now on our board, Mayer is safe as houses, me will eventually be loathed and despised by many WTs fans...but he is safe - the NRL has his back.

I just hope when it comes to the crunch later in the year, when we find out the remaining two Leichhardt games are gone....I hope that doesnt de-rail our season

So who do these members support liechardt oval or the Weststigers…. To be honest if the club decided to play the games at ANZ membership would increase.Players should be concerned about playing footy and nothing else.

As much as I love games at Leichhardt, i have always said I'm all about maximising our revenue.
So if ANZ Stadium is the place we turnover the most $$$, well that should be our only home ground.
Maybe even 1 game a year at Leichhardt and 1 game at Campbelltown a year could be the go to keep some happy, but then again it wouldn't be worthwhile there effort for Leichhardt Council to getting that ground to NRL standard ( so much work is required by the sounds of it).

Agree, 10 games at ANZ. Souths/Easts at LO, Manly at CS.

If we keep pandering to sentiment there won't be a club left over to support or bicker over.

We're also in a situation where we're paying back a loan to the NRL so I can see why the club is taking the guaranteed dollars from ANZ rather than potentially spending money and making a loss by playing at Leichardt to have it paid back.
Also with the club looking at taking their facilities away from Concord I have no problem with them making the most of their money to use to improve and upgrade their next facility and training bases to bring it up to NRL Standard and if that results in improved on field performance then so be it, hopefully improved on field success generates more income the club can use to cover costs of playing out of LO and CS.
I love going to both LO and CS and hopefully in the future the club finds a way to play out of both as much as possible, until then there's no room for sentiment in business and your P + L.

This part is true. We were getting ripped off in the past and now we have the chance to negotiate a new contract which can cost us less money and even make playing there profitable.

We are in a stronger bargaining position than the council. If the Tigers leave LO, they have no real tenants at all. A couple of junior games here and there. Council is footing the bills for the stadium (and rightly so) so it's in their best interests to secure a tenant and income stream.

They have a real opportunity to take advantage of the offer the council is giving them, it would be a very brave Mayer to walk away from this just to get the $100k guaranteed at ANZ.

Surely they could profit something under the new terms being offered.

Will leaving LO translate into more members? I doubt it very much in the short term, i think member numbers would fall slightly.

I think Mayers position is anything but safe as houses …..... but thats another issue for another thread.
When it comes to making decisions like this about where we play, money shouldnt be the only criteria. However, with the NRL in control of the board following Balmains demise, they may well decide money is the only criteria which is a shame for those that love a particular aspect of the Wests Tigers organisation.

I agree that memberships would probably fall slightly short term but isnt it time we started looking long term? Souths and dogs memberships increased with moving to Homebush, no doubt winning helped aswell, but it shows that moving there doesnt neccessarily mean will lose fans.

A lot of people point to the Canterbury and Souths examples for success at ANZ. Their move was easier, no joint ventures, pretty much one set of fans so to speak.

I think the sensible option is to wean the fans away from the suburban grounds over a planned period of seasons. Currently there are 4 games at each. This should be revised to 3, then 2 but ultimately i think there should **always** be a game at each no matter how much ANZ pay.

To lose these venues purely on costs alone would be criminal. Either way, best to wait end see what comes of council discussions with the club end of this month.

Suburban footy fields are tribal heartlands that delight "no frills" rugby league fans. Spectators crowd together on the hill or in rickety stands, because watching the slow-motion replay on TV just isn't as authentic as being there.

The sound of the old siren and crowds cheering floods into the local neighbourhood. The players are so close you can nearly touch them, a feeling of familiar magic and atmosphere that is lost in the new state of the art stadia.

It is easy to romanticise the old grounds but let's not forget that the "sardine can" licensed areas, standing in mud and rain, dodgy facilities and no parking can be a nightmare. Nonetheless rugby league would lose its charm if we didn't have grounds like Leichhardt, Jubilee or Brookvale Ovals.

Kogarah in particular has a history in this game that simply cannot be matched.

Raper, Gasnier, Langlands, Provan. Men that have been enshrined on trophies, in statues and immortals lists. They all carved out their legacy at the oval on Jubilee Avenue.

As a fan, migrating slowly with the sea of red and white across the Princes Highway is special. If you're a local you know only the away team supporters are silly enough to take on the never ending line at Sizzler. "Saints Leaguies" is far quicker and better for a meal.

On the hill the Dragons Army sing and drop beer on their Penfolds jerseys that are as old as a good bottle of Grange. But whatever you do, just don't mention the Steelers.

While the 'Phantom Siren' is long gone, there are always a couple of poor imitations and if you're lucky you might see the infamous 'Skull' hanging from a tree in the carpark.

But it's the footy you're there to see.

From the 11-straight premierships of the '50s and '60s, to Benji, Nightingale and Big Georgey Rose, the supporters are as unforgiving as they are passionate.

Over the other side of town Leichhardt Oval is an ornament to the history of grassroots rugby league. But the Tigers are at risk of losing a huge piece of their heritage as the Wests Tigers board debates with Leichhardt Council over the conditions of the ground.

The Tigers are expecting around 12,500 to pack into their iconic inner west battlefield when they host the Raiders on Sunday. Captain Robbie Farah thrives on a full house at Leichhardt saying this week: "The fans are so close you can hear every word they say. When you score it feels like they are on top of you".

Yes, the dressing rooms might be daggy and the hot water might run out but for Tiger traditionalists, they don't want to play anywhere else.

These grounds hold so much history, but sadly an uncertain future in rugby league.
