BALMAIN LEAGUES CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT

I welcome today’s agreement between Balmain Leagues Club and developer Heworth, which will provide an immediate cash injection to keep the Club afloat.

Earlier today, I called a meeting of all the parties to discuss the Club’s dire financial state and to try to broker an agreement to keep the Club from going into voluntary administration.

I am very pleased that Balmain Leagues Club and Heworth have found an interim solution that will see the Club remain viable.

Council fought a long and successful battle against a previous owner of the site in the NSW Land and Environment Court to ensure the Tigers would have a home in any redevelopment.

That court ruling means that there is an absolute requirement for a Tigers club to be located in the new development, if it is to be approved – a fact I have restated to Heworth today.

Given the perilous financial position of Balmain Leagues Club I have today contacted Wests Ashfield, the shareholders of Wests Tigers, about their potential involvement in a Balmain Tigers or Wests Tigers leagues club to be established in the proposed development of the former Leagues Club site.

I commend the Balmain Leagues Club’s board members, Heworth and Wests Ashfield for acting in good faith and I will be working closely and transparently with them in the coming days to secure the future of the Tigers.

Mayor of the Inner West

Part private ownership coming do we think?
Mr Jaycar?

That's the rumour gaining momentum.
But Jaycar is about to float so I'm not sure the timing is right.

It might be the reason he IS floating Jaycar. To raise the funds,I assume he would be buying into the club privately.

Can someone clear something up here?
Do the council own the rights to Balmain leagues club now?
Why is Darcy speaking on behalf of Balmain representatives?
I half expected this letter to be penned by the GM of Balmain football club. To scroll down and see it was Darcy I’m completely confused.
Any info will help, thanks.

JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT

BALMAIN LEAGUES CLUB LTD & HEWORTH PTY LTD

12 September, 2018

The financial agreement struck today between Heworth and Balmain Leagues Club Ltd is a demonstration of both parties’ commitment towards bringing the Balmain Tigers back to Rozelle.

Heworth, which has plans to develop the old Balmain Leagues Club site on Victoria Road, Rozelle, has contributed a significant cash injection to the club, in addition to the ongoing financial and business support, and debt relief, it has provided since acquiring the site last year.

Balmain Leagues Club CEO, Michelle Nielsen said the club expected that discussions would immediately begin with stakeholders in good faith, and with their commercial, and member’s interests, in mind.

“We thank Heworth for the support they’ve shown throughout this process and look forward to working with them, with the ultimate aim of shoring up our assets, our member services, our club and our future.” she said.

Heworth Development Director Brian Hood said that helping secure the long-term viability of the Leagues Club, and its local football competition, remains an important objective.

“Heworth is committed to continuing to work with the club, and any other parties, to ensure the Balmain Tigers have a future on the Balmain peninsula,” Heworth Development Director, Brian Hood said.

“The current agreement certainly doesn’t impact our development proposal, which is being considered by Inner West Council, and includes a brand-new clubhouse for the Balmain Leagues Club at its traditional home on Victoria Road, Rozelle.

“Our goal from the outset has been to deliver a well-designed, and activated, mixed-use precinct, and help breathe new life into one of Sydney’s most dilapidated sites. The inclusion of increased public space, more food and beverage options, and the return of the Tigers, is still very much at the heart of these plans.

“Neither the current financial situation of the Leagues Club, nor the conjecture over the Western Harbour Tunnel proposal by the State Government, will deter Heworth from pushing ahead with its plans for the site. We share with Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne an ongoing commitment to bring the Balmain Tigers back home to Rozelle.”

In May 2018, Heworth lodged its Development Application (DA) for the old Balmain Leagues Club Site with Inner West Council. A condition for development is inclusion of space for the Club.

Obviously the west connex or development of the site will require digging a big hole.

Once this stage in complete, they should throw Benny Elias in before the first concrete is poured

One minute the Tigers are going into liquidation …then proceeding with the development...what about the 1.5 million debt they can not pay to remain in business.
Someone is telling porkies this not even taking into account the massive monies owed to the West’s group very puzzling.

I'm guessing Heworth paid some, all or guaranteed the amount that is now due to buy the club more time. Heworth cannot get their development through without the club. Seems the council may be coming to the table now as they would prefer the development to the State Government's plans for the site.

Wests Ashfield should take over the running of the Balmain side of things, and rebrand themselves as Wests Tigers.

One club with one owner moving forward.

They are in Balmain territory anyway these days, it makes sense to me, even as a diehard Balmain tragic.

Maybe you should start a Balmain Tigers forum.
Comments like yours are draconian and not helpful.
And no, I’m not an old magpie, I was a Balmain boy but am now a proud Wests Tiger!

No ….but it also concerns the ability of Balmain to meet their commitments to Wests Tigers so I don't see how funding options in the future for Wests Tigers can't be discussed...which does include both those entities...
