Tim Sheens Must be Retained

When will this club do the honourable thing and extend Tims contract beyond the 2011 season. The mere fact we are running third on 24 points and the team is yet to play its best football and have its best team on the field suggests to me the best is still yet to come.

When I compare how Tim handled that issue with Benji being fined for turning up late for training *earler in the year) and how Anderson from Parramatta handled his thoughts (by going public) on how Jarryd Hayne was performing shows the difference between a good coach and a coach who is not only good but knows how to manage potentially damaging situations. Its no coincidence once that problem was resolved we have gone on to win 6 of our next 7 matches.

Stephen Humphreys and his board hopefully have come to the same conclusion.

Oh boy, your pouring petrol on the fire. Just wait, not only are you making bonfire, you are going to start a whole darn bushfire in here.

My thoughts are, yes and no. We have a terrible semis record in his time with us and his bizarre team selections are definite causes for concern, but….......he does have us sitting in third position right now.

Past Vs Present - It could go either way.

Im all for Sheens seeing out his contract till the end of 2011 only if we make the semis this season but beyond the 2011 season i would like to see what someone else can do just to freshen things up.
Sheens has done an extraodinary job to freshen the team up after seasons of looking stale but by 2012 the staleness will more than likely return so personally i would like to see a change.
Anyone but Roycey though

Nope, he should go at the end of this year even if we win the premiership.

I think realistically from the position we are in at the moment if we don't make the preliminary final this year he should step aside, but if we at least make the last 4 teams he should be given another year and then if we dont at least equal that or go better he should step aside.

Those of us that can remember what it was like before Sheens should have no argument with you knuckles.
Before he came along I didn't think I'd ever see a Tigers premiership.
He has turned our club from the jokes of the league to an exciting , marketable and popular team.
Its no coincidence we are on free to air most weeks. We attract one of the biggest ratings.
He should be Tigers coach for however long he wants and we should be grateful for it.

It's all well and good he delivered us a premiership, and the Wests Tigers faithful will always be grateful for that. However, he can't have a mortgage on the position living off achievements five years ago. Folkesy got the bullet four seasons after delievering the Bulldogs last premiership. Browny consistently got St. George into the top four and he got the arse. At the end of the day coaches set a benchmark with the results they get, and five seasons is far too long to wait for just another finals berth. If they win the premiership this year, give him another three years, I'll be happy with that. If they get to the finals honour him with another year to give it one last shot as he will have more or less the same side as this year, and there will be no excuses.

At teh start of the year I wanted Tim gone. After seeing what he has over come and how far he has brought the team despite the team not hitting top form yet and having players constantly out injured it shows to me he's a master.

Good Luck with that…

Tim Sheens should be placed in to a Board Role at the Club. His knowledge and understanding of the game is second to none, plus he can also attract alot of corporate dollars.

As far as coaching goes, I'd like to see a change, but not a new structure...

I would like a new face at the end of 2011\. I wonder if Brown deciding to stay on for one more year at Huddersfield has any connection with Sheens contract expiring at the end of 2011\. I know Brown has some fans in high places at tigertown. Anyway pure speculation and if Sheens wants the gig beyond 2011 Iam sure he will get it but i get the feeling he may want a new challenge by than. I think thats the bottom line its not what the club wants but rather what Sheens wnts to do come the end of 2011

i actually opened this thread and thought you said sheens must be retarded.
i guess after reading so many posts over the years that have said that has warped my brain

at the start of the year i just wanted the club to make a decision.
didn't really care which way they went, just make a decision and commit to it and get on with the job.

is royce gone?
will someone be brought to the club to replace him or will the current staff see new roles?

i like it how it is with sheens at the moment.
i've seen great coaches retire too early, like the great bill walsh in my avatar.
and some have stayed far too long.

for me if the club is going in the right direction i would commit to the coach.
how we finish the year and the squad we have in jan-feb would determine if a new contract was offered.
i wouldn't be giving him an automatic extension just for doing what he is supposed to be doing to deserve the extension we just gave him.

i have alot of faith that our ceo will have a good plan in place.
i get the feeling that since we changed our ceo the football budget has increased so sheens could spend money on the things he feels the team has needed at any given time.
the first being steve folks.
the next being able to take the team out of sydney after the souths loss.since then we have won 6 from 7.
i don't think both those things happen under the former regime.

I will say this. This is a results driven business largely. In my opinion Sheens's situation has always revolved around weather or not he gets us to the finals. At this stage that looks good but it shouldn't be the be all and end all here. I think it's best we reassess the situation at the end of our season. Am i against the idea of extending his deal here? No i'm not to be honest. He's built this squad to tailor to his style. You don't just let that all go and expect positive change. Sheens has us in a positive place at the moment and largely it's come to getting the right players in the right positions.

The fact of the matter is you only change what is broken and unrepairable. At the moment we're neither and as it stands, unless Sheens walks away, he is likely to re-sign here.

I'm happy for Sheens to stay as long as it's on 12 month deals. If the Tigers are cruising making the finals, give him another 12 months, if they fail to make the 8, then bye bye.

Don't forget, we were a rabble before Tim came along. No-one wanted to coach us! We had had Lamb and Langmack, we were rejected by Bellamy and others. Tim got the job by default - and he was OK with that.

He gave us structure and he has significantly improved our juniors. I also think he did the same for Nth Queensland and that is why they were so good in the years after he left.

However, I do believe Tim has been our firstgrade coach for too long. His results aren't impressive - and I am only looking for some consistency. We did win the comp and there is no way we could have without him. Prince would never have come to us, and we had strong youngsters due to our cubs program.

I am worried that f Tim goes we lose our structure and stability. I would love to see him as coaching director or coach of the under 20's. We would become so strong. But that would probably be seen by him as a demotion and he does not deserve that.

He instigated my biggest heartbreak in 1989, and one of my biggest highs in 2005\. He deserves his own terms - I just hope he knows when that is as he should never be sacked like he was at the Cowboys! How ironic that he then beat them in a GF!!

Must admit when I put this thread up, I expected to be in the minority in wanting Tim retained. Unless of course someone can give us a credible alternative then obviously its worth considering a successor to the role.

But it appears there are some thinking fans who do want him to stay on. I think its important to look back to where we have come from as Lards points out and where we are now …... its all largely attributed to Tim Sheens.

A happy club is more often than not a winning club and I think the players like playing under Tim ..... apart from Daine Laurie, I have never heard a bad word said by any of the players .... and that includes the ones now playing for other clubs.

I'm not saying Tim has been perfect in his time with the Wests Tigers ........ but by golly we could have done a lot worse.

Geeze Beji, Robbie, Heighno etc. think of him as a father figure and don't think they would welcome a new coach either. As someone said before, he has tailored the team to suit his style and the players mentioned above only play to his style. It would take a hell lot of a time for any other coach to get set to our team or even worse the other players to get set to his way of coaching.

This is the EXACT problem with the WT right now!! And this is why Sheens SHOULD go!! The players hold power over the coach. This should NEVER happen at any club. Unless Sheens get fair dinkum and reasserts his authority over the players, then it is time to give it away..
This same principle applies to life in general, kids cheat their parents, teachers and any figures of authority. Why?? Because they have gotten away with it in the past and will continue to do so because they know they can.

Next time you watch a replay of any game, just have a look at both teams in the sheds at half time. EVERY single week the opposition are all sitting around like a bunch of obedient school kids listening and hanging on every word their coach is telling them. In the WT sheds, its always the guys having a yarn to each other, walking around the room, not even listening to Sheens blast them.

I personally think Sheens should stay and and more than happy to have the guy around for as long as he wants to be around. But he needs to put a massive rocket up the players' backsides, put the fear back into them and let them know who is in charge of this sideshow!!

Oh my god, are you kidding me!!

In his 8 year reign we have made the finals once, once, once!!! Yes its great they are currently third but the season isnt over and the guy already has another year left on his contract.

If come the end of next year we are playing better than we are now and make at least the semi finals this year, then yes extend his contract. Any talk of extending his contract now for 2012 is absolutely laughable and shows the mediocrity whish has developed amongst our supporters.

I want the best, I want a consistent team which is in the finals at least every second year.

Lastly for the people that say look at how we were back in 2000-2002 that was over 8 years ago! There are plenty of coaches as good if not better out there than Mr Sheens. Change is needed and now.

I agree with this, especially if we don't make the finals this year.
