Tim Sheens Returns to Tigers

Regarding the appointment, I think Sheens has some of the highest highs and lowest lows in NRL history.

I loved him for 5 years (2004, 5, 6 for the high of being premiers, 10 and 11). Outside of WT he created the green machine and was too awful for the last placed Cowboys.

I wanted him gone at the end, and also for a couple of years before 2010. I have to let hindsight judge this one a few years from now, and I hope the job descriptions are very clear.

Great News. Im thinking one Benji Quinton Marshall will be the only ex tiger not having a gig here. Talk about burning your bridges.

How much was Robbie enjoying his role last night lol

The grin on his face when the chant went up made my night.

Robbie farah is LO through and through

Benji’s gone, but wonder what Robbie’s thinking about the Sheens role. Any looking over the shoulder of the blue shirt going on....

Welcome back Tiger Tim looking forward to having you back at the club.
Well done to Justin, Lee and the organisation!!

It's no secret that the club has struggled(over the past decade or so) to change with the times or create a strong performance culture and team identity, so this to me signifies another trailblazing moment from the club.
Ironically it's by appointing someone who helped bring our only success and reuniting him with one of his pupils - and the person currently tasked with taking the team to its pinnacle.

As long as everyone's role/purpose is clearly defined and they can work collaboratively toward a common goal, there should be no issues. Our biggest problem is (re) shaping our identity and culture and I only see that we're bringing some great minds together, to achieve this.

I think the Club for a long time now has been struggling with this position and trying to find a way to make it work and havent been able to. In the end the perfect answer is to say to someone like Sheens..."here you go, you make it work".

The evidence of this has been job titles in the club. Brett Hodgson - "pathways", then he leaves for better pastures. Ronnie Palmer, moved into "pathways", then back on the magic sponge and fairy dust, Brett Kimmorley "pathways". It has seemed a dogs breakfast of half baked efforts from the outside, Im encouraged by this move.

Our Flegg and reserves are doing very well, if we can streamline the process of getting them into our top grade in the most effective way it's a massive win

This is how majority of Penrith's current team started... all playing juniors together and killing it.

Im repeating myself here a bit, but the majority of Penriths current team started by Pamfers forming pathways with regional areas and dragging them into their system. This is what I can see Sheens doing.

What is it about 2021 professional rugby league, that the return of a soon-to-be 71yo former NRL coach is greeted with such entusiasm?

What does he have to offer a more contemporary (with players and many fans) coaching team other than extended experience in the game?

So, the answer to building a future powerhouse club of the NRL is to seek the input of a relic of the past?

Huh?? I wonder what he is being paid??

If the topic was about signing Ben Gardiner (he's the Magpies' NSW Cup coach) to a senior role of "football performance", I'd be much more enthused.

But, good on Sheensy for adding to his superannuation portfolio. Let's hope that his impact is as significant in the immediate future of the Wests Tigers.

Bit ageist isn't it? He's kept involved in the game.

and has always been an innovator

A Sheenius you might say.

A good role for Sheens.

Good to see 2012 didn't completely burn the bridges and Tim was happy to entertain coming back.

Some decent appointments being made of late. Expanding the football department in a big way.

As someone once said on here ...we are getting the band back together ...well the band leader is back ....Sheenius returns ....the Fonz ...the Ayatollah of Tigers football

He tended to build us up in waves, we had the 1st one in 2004,05. he built us up again for that 09-11 tilt that collapsed in a heap in 2012. I don't think it is impossible to believe that he wouldn't have got us to another peak around 2015 mark with the young players he had coming through the lower grades.

I like the move he has always been able to attract talent so will excited to see what comes of things in his recruiting type role

Maybe you should watch the Clint Eastwood movie "Trouble with the Curve" - it may give you an insight into the reasoning behind the appointment.

You may be right but 2012.... imagine WT as premiership favourites.

I think in the end it was recruitment and retention that lost me, not necessarily just the on-field performance.

Funny thing is it was the squandered recruitment of the players he had coming thru that are now starring at other clubs that put us on the path to where we are now.

Well the movie you referenced is basically an anti moneyball film. We will continue to use data in recruitment so I don't see that as an insight into the reasoning.

I'm talking about spotting young talent (even though the spotter could be in their 70's. Just because you are young doesn't mean you know more or because you are old - it has passed you. (basic under lying theme of the movie). Tiger-Tragic was saying that he thought Sheens was too old. Quote - "So, the answer to building a future powerhouse club of the NRL is to seek the input of a relic of the past?"

Cochise the point I was trying to make, was age doesn't matter if you have the right experience and talent for the task.

What is the drama and disharmony after he left refer to?

Tim gave too much power to a few players and then couldn't wrestle that power back
