Surprise surprise Buzz on 360 predicting the Sheens signing to be a failure. Kenty and Hoops calling it a good move. Kenty seems to be more reasonable when discussing WT this year. Still gives it to us when it’s deserving which I’m okay with.

Appointing Sheens is wise. The challenge will be listening to him. He was calling the Tigers out for not having a West’s Tigers brand from the ground up. He like many understand that MacArthur - Group 6 area is where the players will come from for the next 20 years. Demographics change and the inner west won’t have many league players in 20 years.

We are always battling this issue due to the nature of the Tigers Magpies merger. Someone at some stage has to throw it all out the window as a footy club it’s obvious where we need to focus. It’s the South Western corridor the place will have a huge population with land subdivisions, new airport etc.

Not sure it can be done without West’s Cambo involvement but it has to be.

Doueihi, Seyfarth and Brooks are three examples of our inner west local juniors in the NRL. Nofoaluma is from the South West. We cannot give up on the inner west as it is a gold mine of talent. We move out, Roosters move right in.

Have to cover all areas. You are highlighting the exact issue. We have to develop players from the south west they aren’t just being lost to the Tigers but rugby league. The fact we have juniors kick on from the inner west probably to a greater proportion than the south west tells you that with a bigger nursery we develop fewer players. Has zero to do with where current players came from just shows little to no effort has been made.

I don't think it follows that because we have more Balmain juniors "kicking on" (for example in first grade (3) vs Macarthur (1)) that we necessarily have a lack of development or loss of footballers in Macarthur. Pretty long bow to draw and you'd need far more data over time.

According to SMH last month, Western Suburbs in 2021 has less registered male tackle league participants (they don't break down by age group) than Penrith, Parramatta, Cronulla and Canterbury districts (currently about 2500 registered). Balmain has ~1800 registered. Penrith has ~7400 registered.

So despite what anyone might say about "boom nurseries", the numbers of actual players in the Wests Suburbs district is Top 5 in Sydney at best, and **very** substantially less than Penrith and Parramatta.

I honestly think, without actually having oversight or direct involvement in top-level Wests Juniors region, it's very hard to speculate about what Tigers and Magpies are / are not doing right, especially compared to Balmain.

I can tell you I asked Pascoe a few months ago how he would respond to a hypothetical argument that Wests Tigers aren't doing enough to engage / support the Macarthur. He proceeded to rattle off a number of initiatives they'd done (I don't recall the list in detail, the conversation moved on, but he had stats e.g. number of schools visited) and asked if I wanted a larger list. I really should have said yes, but I instead I made a point that Tigers and Magpies should probably advertise their activities more aggressively so people were informed about what the club was actually doing.

I wonder what the numbers looked like 10 years ago? We will never know, but i wonder if there is any correlation as to how well the NRL side is going?

After all, it’s the parents who decide these things in the first place.

I know some of the clubs don’t use/have juniors for this effect, but they will be the ones that struggle when there benefactor goes away?

But for sure you need to have the infrastructure in place to make it happen. We seem to be going in the right direction.

‘‘There’s been a lot of focus on young Tedesco, **but I’ll be surprised if I start him first game,**’’ Sheens said. ‘‘If he’s a young prize-fighter, you wouldn’t want to throw him into the deep end to any great degree. We just have to be careful there with him but I am impressed with him.’’

Well Sheens did surprise himself because he in fact did Select Tedesco in that 1st Round 2012...Teddy lasted 20mins so the deep end part is true also..

Haha @Geo....wasn't the only irony that wasn't lost on me either.

I've noticed a few of you have always closely followed the junior divisions and while I personally knew none of this - about the longevity of success, or how Sheens was fundamental to it.
( I remember discussions in the preseason with @cochise @pawsandclaws and a few others about this particular subject).
So it highly fascinates me.
And especially as we're currently seeing Penrith reap the rewards for something we'd similarly shared in vision.
These articles confirm that the club was once the biggest talent hotbed in the NRL and seeing how things are going now, it looks promising we can back there.

We threw the baby out with the bathwater after the "Big 4" debacle.

We couldn't afford a bath or the water to fill it

Gus said on 100% footy, Sheens is a good signing for the club, also said he should be out the south west (Campbelltown/Camden) area which has been neglected, said he would be surprised if he isn't already on to it.
Gus also said Camden asked Gus to become part of Penrith a few years back because they were being neglected.

I don’t know if the obsession with cambo is founded.

What doesn’t make sense to me is no funds are coming from cambo area with most funds coming from inner west area. The leagues club nor counsel do anything for us. Seems a one way street to me.

Not sure about corporate dollar but they keep sprucing cambo up as the next best thing but in reality most Sydney Siders avoid the place.

I’d be more focussing on strengthening our relationship with the footy school in Liverpool

Why can’t we do both? There are more kids in the ctown area as it’s only getting bigger! Make Liverpool affiliated with our club, that’s another massive area! Gus said it the other day aswell, we should be focusing on the south west! So much talent and new And old fans we can attract. You mentioned nofa as a ctown kid, how about chris Lawrence, Brett Hodgson and Tedesco? Or the ones we missed like Hayne or Folau, Eric groathe.

You want to turn into a super power club, we need to focus on making the south west our territory! Recruit players and fans, make it known the south west is affiliated with the West’s tigers. Hopefully in the future we can get our home ground split between ctown and Leichhardt with the odd game at Tamworth.

I agree the Campbelltown and Macarthur area needs investment in junior development, pathways and above all an outstanding scouting system. There is no reason this cannot be done and from what we know Sheens, Kimmorely and one other appointment have been made for pathways. But this cannot detract from the outstanding junior talent in the inner west area. My personal view is the NSWRL and NRL should have provided funding to further development in the South West.

My problem is that's a small number of footballers to mention, if Campbo is such a boom area - population-wise yes, but are those kids playing rugby league? I can easily name 5 or 6 NRL players from any region of Sydney, there's nothing (yet) special about the output from the Macarthur.

In regards to "missed" players, I'm going to say this every time someone drolls out the same old cliches, but Israel Folau moved to Brisbane with his parents when he was 15. You can't find your way into the U18s Tigers feeder teams when you live in Brisbane.

And Eric Grothe Jr, you mean we missed out bringing through the son of an Eels legend?

The point is, they were once aligned with tigers.
I think they have a pathways with the Bulldogs now, yeah?

Either way, yes.
It's in QLD.

So the students/players might make a home there and be more likely to want to stay there and sign with Qld Clubs.

I think you're missing the point mate if the MacArthur region is " a boom population-wise area" and they are not playing rugby league. The challenge is to get them playing, develop them and provide pathways.

Titans i think. Makes sense seeing that's where the school is. Weird that they've never been associated to the hometown, they were always a bit of a mercenary school though

You mentioned nofa as a ctown kid, how about chris Lawrence, Brett Hodgson and Tedesco? Or the ones we missed like Hayne or Folau, Eric groathe.

Keebra Park was pretty good:

You know Keebra Park is in Qld, right?

The point is, they were once aligned with tigers.
I think they have a pathways with the Bulldogs now, yeah?

Either way, yes.
It's in QLD.

So the students/players might make a home there and be more likely to want to stay there and sign with Qld Clubs.

Except that is ***not*** the point at all. The post of @jirskyr that @weststigers responded to simply made a point that Campbo is not a booming nursery based on the number of players coming from it, and @weststigers posts a list of 30 odd players from a school in Qld? How is that relevant?

Produces a lot of talent...
But yeah, a lot of players brought in from Nz and whatnot.

We had some really good players come through there but that partnership is no longer there.
