Time to give Woodsy and Teddy a break

The real story behind Aaron Woods' catch-up with David Klemmer

Aaron Woods copped plenty of grief for meeting with David Klemmer and other Bulldogs players last week, but perhaps those who booed him for doing so would feel differently if they knew the full story.

It's no secret Woods and Klemmer are close friends. Which is why, when Klemmer's newborn son was admitted to intensive care more than a fortnight ago, one of the first people he rang was Woods.

Klemmer was a mess. He was concerned about the health of his third child – and he went to Woods for support.

You can say what you like about the timing of the meeting, but regardless of the team you play for or where you might end up next year, that all gets put aside when a friend goes through the ordeal Klemmer went through with his son.

His child was suffering from a torn lung, which later became infected, and spent almost a week in an intensive care unit. Thankfully he is now on the mend and fighting fit.

When he was released from hospital, it was irrelevant the Tigers were playing the Bulldogs that weekend, because Woods was always going to check up on his friend.

Instead of justifying his catch-up, Woods chose to accept the brunt of Tigers' fans frustrations.

Josh Reynolds was also there. He and Woods will be groomsmen for Klemmer at his wedding at the end of the year.

They regularly meet for coffee, often in Belmore, but given the headlines surrounding Woods' future they opted to go elsewhere.

So when a few other Bulldogs players popped in by chance, suddenly the conspiracy theories went into overdrive when they were photographed together at a Rosedale cafe.

You might not agree with the way Woods has handled his protracted contract negotiations, but those fans who booed him for meeting Klemmer now have an understanding of his bond with the Bulldogs prop.

This time last year Woods was close to convincing Klemmer to jump ship and join the Tigers, only for the NSW and Australian prop to recommit to the Bulldogs.

Woods hasn't signed with the Bulldogs. He will most likely end up in Belmore, but a week ago was still undecided about whether he would stay at the Tigers or commit to the Bulldogs.

Then the club imposed its deadline. Some believe the club had no choice in order to plan for the future. Woods saw it as a slap in the face.

It's a sad predicament given Woods likes new coach Ivan Cleary and believes in the vision he has for the club.

Unfortunately he might not be around to see it come to fruition. If he wants to stay a Tiger for life, all he has to do is ask and the contract will be put back on the table.

But he's been hurt by the club's ultimatum, so much so he chose to ignore some of the Tigers' hierarchy in the sheds after their win against the Bulldogs on Sunday.

and the fans saw his not signing for months as what then?

If this is accurate, the club had to move on, he had ample opportunity to sign or not sign, if it meant so much to him to stay, then I do not understand the months of "will I or won't I"

You've let your manager drag things out Aaron, you've got no one to blame but yourself in regards to fans and the club's reaction. The player market (stupidly on the NRL's part) is open now, you've made it abundantly clear you weren't keen to be here, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive, you've done nothing to allay that. You've done this and you've damaged your own brand in the process.

Storm in a tea cup. Much easier to judge from afar and speculate; like the article said, he's been friends with Klemmer for years. At some point there were whispers that maybe Klemmer would come here or Woods would go there; pretty sure it was around last years SOO.

I agree completely. Let's say you're in Woods position and still genuinely undecided as to what club you want to sign with. If you have every intention of playing for a team except the Tigers, fine, ignore the deadline, but if you're thinking there's every chance you may stay for the right price or whatever…well ask for more time to consider. Simple. Having a sook in the sheds after the game is not going to look good either, and make no mistake, whilst Woods said the fans booing didn't bother him, it did.

The way I see it, and this is my opinion so others can choose whether or not they agree, but if the club has to come out with a statement in regards to fans booing and requests that it stops immediately, then as a passionate supporter I will abide by my club and it's statements whether I like it or not.

When it comes to criticism he's definitely no Shane Warne

Suck it up Woods and clear out your locker

I think given today's signing news it is very clear to me we owe Woods an apology.

Obviously Woods was at a recruitment meeting on behalf of the Tigers and convincing Josh Reynolds to sign.

Well played Woodsie, well played !

He could have went to see him and his son at home.
"When a few other Bulldogs players popped in by chance" hahaaaaaaaa yeah sure, I can just see it "oh what a suprise seeing you guys here"

If it's true that the club will put the contract back on the table if he asks, what was the point of the deadline?

This article sounds like a bunch of you know what.

jack gibson is credited with the most famous quote about booing.
he was a guest commentator at a state of origin clash at lang park.
as the blues ran on the field, there was the customary booing by the queensland crowd.

gibson wryly delivered- they'd boo santa claus.

funny stuff.

This vandetta the media has for us ATM is like nothing I have ever seen. They've even taken to bashing the fans, that's how pathetic it is.

I messaged the reporter on twitter of the article and said the booing from fans was more caused by how the contract negotiations were handled. His reply was

"Spoke to some who said they booed because of the meeting. Others may have different reasons."

I'd love to see the media come out and state he was boo'ed because he has carried himself terribly. I wonder what someone like Sterlo thinks of the way these guys have carried on.

Didn't know where to post this but thought highlighted part is relevant to James and Aaron

Shaun Johnson re-signs with New Zealand Warriors until the end of 2019

THE Warriors Shaun Johnson has recommitted to the club despite lucrative interest from NRL and overseas rivals as out of favour utility Tuimoala Lolohea eyes a move across the ditch.
>
New Zealand No. 7 Johnson has inked a new two-year extension despite a $1 million deal understood to have been offered from English Super League and interest from Sydney clubs.
>
Johnson’s retention until the end of 2019 is a significant coup for new coach Stephen Kearney,
>
but it will likely come at the cost of Lolohea, who is being pursued by Canberra and the Wests Tigers.
>
The 22-year-old Kiwi international is understood to have been shopped to Australian clubs in a bid to secure a first grade spot, despite being under contract until the end of 2018.
>
Lolohea has been playing on the wing for the Warriors reserve grade outfit for the past month with Ata Hingano and fellow youngster Mason Lino ahead of him in the halves pecking order.
>
Kearney’s naming of rookie Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad to debut against the Roosters this Sunday is a further blow to Lolohea, who is understood to be reluctant to leave family to chase an NRL start.
>
If he can be convinced to leave his homeland the Tigers loom as a likely option before the June 30 deadline, a move which could see Mitchell Moses’ repeated request for an immediate release to Parramatta granted.
>
As for Johnson, he has always spoken of being a one-club player and lifting the NRL’s sleeping giant to its maiden premiership.
\
\
But after years of underwhelming returns since leading the Warriors to the 2011 grand final in his rookie season, for the first time Johnson considered leaving his local club to pursue success elsewhere.
>
In a week where Test forward Ben Matulino announced he will link with former coach Ivan Cleary at Concord, and with fellow international playmaker Kieran Foran almost certainly leaving at the end of the season, Johnson’s recommitment is a serious shot in the arm for the Auckland-based franchise.
>
“This was a big contract for a lot of reasons and I’m excited to be able to lock it away and know I’ll be here for another two years,” Johnson said.
>
**“My belief in this club is massive and my belief that we can do something special here is bigger than ever with everything we have in place.\
\
“ … There was more to think about this time but, in the end, it came down to winning.\
\
\
“I could go to another club and another system but I realised winning there (at another club) wouldn’t mean as much as winning here. That’s what I want to be a part of here**.”
>
Johnson’s decision means the Warriors will keep three-quarters of their all-Kiwi spine next season, with captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Johnson and hooker Issac Luke all tied up until at least 2018.
>
The club is resigned to losing Foran as he eyes a move closer to his family in Sydney, with Canterbury all but confirmed to secure his sought after signature.
>
Reports from New Zealand also suggest that the Warriors will lure Titans back-rower Leivaha Pulu away from the Gold Coast for 2018, adding to a roster that is already set to be bolstered by Storm star Tohu Harris.

"Winning wouldn't mean as much as winning here".

That may be one of the greatest quotes i've ever read from any player. Warriors supporters have got to be proud of him.
