By established I mean competently playing NRL in a reputable team. And by solid I actually mean in career best (or close to) form, and displaying attributes and skills that almost independently lift their team i.e. a potential/recognised superstar, or at least a universally recognised very high quality player.
Haha sorry I find this paragraph pretty funny. By solid you actually mean potential or recognised superstar, or at least UNIVERSALLY recognised as very high quality?
OK but I would propose to you that isn't remotely what the word "solid" implies.
So no Tigers don't make a habit of signing superstars, we never really have, and Nicho Hynes, if that is indeed your example, isn't a superstar or universally recognised. Bloke dead set has played about 5 excellent matches, 7 pretty good matches, 10 moderate off-bench matches in a medium-duration but limited on-field career.
I also don't agree with your interpretation of what established is - playing well in a good team? For how long? 1 match? 20 matches? Arguably under your definition, guys like Joe Stimson, Sandor Earl, Albert Vete, Cheyse Blair, Young Tonumaipea, Mo Blair, Ben Hampton etc. were established at Melbourne, because they played alright and the team overall was doing well. And where are they now?
Hence my recognition that it was a bad choice of words, I was being modest.
No need to make a habit of signing superstars, but it would be nice to sign a player of that calibre to continue building the team at this point in time – and we’ve undeniably missed quite a few opportunities in recent history, whether that be our fault or not, or whether that worked out better or worse for us – it isn’t my point, which was only to recognise that we do tend to miss out on what appear to be good opportunities, and in place (barring developing/junior players) sign players who were once highly regarded or considered stars but are a shadow of their former selves. There are too many to name and we all know who they are. But DWZ would be the latest addition to that list!
Nicho Hynes is a potential superstar – are there many who would disagree with that? I’m not sure anyone would disagree that he’d be a high quality signing either.
Established is hard to quantify, in this context I’m sure there would be many interpretations as to what EXACT definition this fits. How about performing well for their team recently, say year to date – half a season or so? This is only half of the criteria I mentioned however, and those players you mention, I can’t say whether they’d have qualified for the other half at the time (being a very good player in their own right). But I’m pretty sure Sandor Earl didn’t, for one.
I think hynes has talent, but I do believe he won’t be as good for the sharks. I would say the sharks Will regret paying the600k. He looks better than he is because of the players around him. I wouldn’t say he’s a game breaker but a solid player who hopefully will improve in a good team.
