Tukimihia Simpkins #248

I am a fan of the kid and love that offloading ability...but must admit I have serious doubts as to whether he will make it. To be brutally honest, he has the mobility of a RUGBY UNION forward, and that is his background. It is a big step up to the NRL from Union.

That 'tackle' attempt 3 mins into the second half was...it was park footy if I am being honest. He just seems to lack any lateral movement.

He has a great skill of offloading and that comes from union. He looks like a kid who may end up back in that game by his early 20s.

Hopefully I am wrong.

Prepared to cut a lot of slack to a bloke playing first grade in the forwards at his age. He's not 27 like Walters.

He is a year or two away tbh but is being forced up because of our lack of depth

If you compare him in terms of mobility, he is years behind the standout guys in the lower grades. He is one of the least mobile young players I have ever seen in terms of side to side movement.

Bench was poorly managed again today.

Tuki didn't achieve anything today...
No one else did either tho.

I think Tuilagi achieved today

And unfortunately it looks like his season has come to an end.

He’s 2 years away. It’s not the end of the world he just needs a lot more development which is fine because he’s just a kid

Could definitely become a good player - needs more time to develop. Needs to work on himself physically because he was getting bumped off tackles all day today

He needs to work on tackling technique too. I saw two lifting tackles from him that escaped scrutiny but one could have been a penalty IMO.

Perfect summary. And to people who talk about him being young, things like natural pace and movement aren't really things you train, they come naturally. Like the two cowboys 18 year olds who debuted last week showed far more mobility and promise than Simpkins.

At the age of just 19, Tuki Simpkins gave us all a glimpse of the potential he possesses during his five games in the top grade.

Having made his NRL debut in Round 18 against Brisbane, Simpkins played all of his games off the interchange bench, and although he played limited minutes, the opportunity at the top level will be beneficial to him moving forward.

Simpkins was called up to Michael Maguire’s NRL team after excelling for Western Suburbs Magpies in the Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

Across 13 games in reserve grade, the hulking forward averaged 112 running metres a game and made 384 tackles (avg. 29.5) with an efficiency of 95.8 percent.

As well as running hard and being a wall in defence, Simpkins possesses a deadly offload — utilising it on 22 occasions and creating attacking raids along the way.

He may have only had a short stint at the top level this season, but Simpkins has the potential to have a long and bright career in the NRL.

Total running metres — 215 (avg. 43)

**2022 FORECAST**

With a handful of games under his belt, Simpkins will be better for the run when he returns for Wests Tigers next season.

A strong pre-season — starting in November — could see him gain a position in the top 17 in 2022, but he’ll be in a battle with a number of rising forwards at the club.

Although Simpkins is eager to be in the NRL team every week, at the age of just 19, there’s no rush to push his progression. He has a bright footy career ahead of him!

Has a while to go. There are some skills that he possess that will prove handy for us but you can tell he is still a kid. Needs to get his body right. He's a keeper just needs time and a couple of years.

not many 19 year olds these days get a crack in the NRL unless they have the talent. Tuki is still learning his craft and physically isn't anywhere near where he'll be in a couple of years. going to be a very very good player moving forward.

Def a lot of talent and given he could have played not just flegg but sg ball this year he was amazing. Will be better next season after another off season too and keep getting better. While we need to sign some players now we also need to make sure we keep room in the cap for these guys
