Unpopular view, but I reckon we are going Ok

Averaging 24 points scored against every week is not ok. I cant see us improving this either.

I know that everyone sees this and goes on about our defence needing to improve but I don't think it's the defence that is that bad. The problem is the poor plays when we have the ball as well as giving away penalties.

You have to attack and threaten with the ball. That is a given. You don't have to though go for the hail mary play on the 3rd tackle too often or push a pass that shouldn't be thrown. If we get this part of our game right then we should have more ball and then we should be defending less which will make an impact to the number of points scored against us.

Totally agree, thats why i cant see the defensive stats improving. Robbie and Benji never learnt how to curb their eagerness to score off every play and I dont see Brooks or Moses practicing it either.

Some great posts and points raised.

We need one experience half, two rookies is not the answer

Players picked in their correct position. i.e Rankin

Poor bench selection

Need repeat sets and stop giving away silly penalities

We are looking more a one man team. Teddy plus support

My expectations at start of season was bottom 4 and believe with our current roster and coach that is our correct position.

Shopping list for 2017 experience half back, Second rower and another impact prop.

Realistically we are an average squad anyway so " going O.K " early in the year is about right , we are not a Squad that you look at and say this is a Top 8 side .

When all is said and done…..sugar coat it as much as you want but the board reads 3 losses on trot and some nervous moments wins over the Warriors and Manly .

Once we get well and truly into the year with players playing with injuries , the players starting to get worn out due to the Representative Season ? that's when you know how good your Squad is .

This week is a Prime example.....we lose Tim Simona for 2 to 3 weeks and we are going to suffer big time cause reality is we haven't got a player that can replace him for his ability and what he brings to our side , that's when you will be able to tell the difference .
If we get some injuries or suspensions we are paper thin in replacements .

To me it's not being negative but being realistic with the Squad we have and for me it doesn't surprise me that we are just doing that " going O.K " , apart from Ballin there is no injuries at the moment and when that happens we simply haven't got those replacements and that is when we will become unstuck .

It's pleasing that we have been competitive in all our games but in none of those games you could feel comfortable that we were in complete control .

If it wasn't for Teddy i think we would of been pretty close to 0/5.

I have to agree with the opening posts we are going ok. I believe we can trouble most sides but our problem is keeping our intensity up for the full 80 mins. Every week we are sailing along pretty well then right on halftime we will let the other side score , then again after halftime. It just takes away any momentum we had then our heads seem to drop a little. If we could tighten that part of the game up then we can only improve. Points dont seem to be a problem ( ex parra game ) just the small lapses in defence.

2 on the Inury list FT
Ballin and Sirro

Oops goes to show how highly I rate him

Well i will retract that FT
Sirro has been named to play
I was looking at last weeks Sunday Herald lol

Yeah I just seen that .

Hopefully he makes me eat humble pie and has a breakout year from now till the end of the year.

Agree with most of this. Our defence hasn't been too bad, the trouble has come when our halves have lost control of the game….then we fatigue, then we make errors, give away penalties and then lose the arm wrestle and miss tackles when possession swings 60 v 40\. We are two quality forwards and an outside back short.

Until we get some semblance of consistency how can anyone say we are going OK

If you measure our best to our worst its like dropping from Mt Everest to the deepest ocean still

We still have a soft underbelly , many of our "potential" players aren't measuring up and we have little or no depth in most positions

And until we can actually see our salary cap issues easing and some quality signings you can't really even stick positive spin on that

Then add this plan for Wests to give Balmain 10 years to pay off their debt for a 25% stake , which is just ludicrous in my opinion and I think Goose has had a long liquid lunch

I may not know much but I do know that leaking points, as we do, is not a recipe for success. Our halves still don't know how to control a game and they are nearing the magical "50 games and you're a real first grader" stage.

As per the time extension for Balmain to repay debt, even if the cost is a reduction in ownership, I applaud Western Suburbs. This dinosaur still needs to know that Balmain are not gone completely.

Good post Goose.Based on the rate of improvement from last few years I was hoping we could be competitive in every game this year - so far we've done that.

This week will be the real clicka for us. This is a game I would expect to lose in other years because - that's what we do. Get off to a good start, show some promise, then lose four in a row.
I think our form has been pretty good - we havnt been badly beaten and all games shoulda coulda won.
Complete our sets, dont get offside with the ref, and every player plays to their ability we can win - the likelihood of that happening - hate to say it but not confident.

Everett,I will go with your first point….we had Austin and nobody thought much of him because we have the SAVIORS in Brooks and Moses....good to see Blake being touted for SOO this year, hope he makes it...Anasta was worth bugger all compared to Austin,it was a shame to see him go...certainly hope the saviors can get their games together, otherwise its no different to 2015....and before the forum goes into melt down for what I said,I was at the Sharkies game and both dead set still looked like rookies 3 seasons down the track...

I think most on here can see that they aren't performing to the level they need to and nowhere near their payrate.

Well Said.

Once the grind kicks in and we are missing a few like every team then you see the full effects of your squad.

I suspect it won't be pretty.

We really nedded to start at least 3/5 with 4 home games. To start 2 from 5 and with a tough 3 months coming up, well you would have to be an optimist to say we will improve on our current 40% win record.

The good consistences I can recall are Woods running strongly and making metres plus tackles, Tedesco's brilliant weaving and tackles, Kev's runs, Robbies tackling, runs and short kicks. Moses involved in everything as best he can, and Grants runs must be as everyone says so. That makes about half the team always trying and consistently good. It is the other players that need attention and whole team try to avoid penalties and losing possession.

If they try every week like the Parra game then they are worth watching.

I agree with the OP. There have been some quite clear stats outlined this week which confirm that the overwhelming majority of tries we leak occurs during the period when our main forwards are off the field or fatigued. The forwards are either being asked to play too many minutes or they are being replaced by significantly inferior players. This in turn confirms what almost all posters on this board seem to think; that our team selection, particularly the bench has been found wanting. Edwards being injured to start the season has been something of an excuse for this, but the widely ridiculed 3 hooker circus is a self inflicted wound. So to sum up, the starting 13 seem to be performing quite well although with some more "well" than others. Select a solid bench - and I would say we have one this week - and better results are likely to follow.

Of course a loss against Newcastle and all the above becomes a load of tripe!

Yeah, we are going okay, but should be three and two and need to sort out our rotation at the very least.

I agree with you goose!
Were are going a lot better than most of us on this forum thought we would.
We basically have an incomplete team.with respect, some of these boys aren't ready for 1st grade,we know that(not sure the coach is aware)yet in the same breath I think they should be proud of them selves.
This team will only get better as the year goes on and if you don't think there will be a few bumps on the way, well ?
And no I don't settle for mediocrity,I just understand what the club has to do to clean up the cap.
