What Hoodoo at BankWest ... plenty of disappointed Individuals this morning ?.What a great place to watch footy in general .. great job Gladys!

They really need to address the playing surface for night games...some is going to get seriously hurt...

Yeah, like the security staff!

I don't think it's the surface, I think its weather with the ground configuration and night games, it was freezing there last night and the dew would've been very very..... Dewy 😔

Dew forms when a surface cools through loss of infrared radiation down to a temperature which is colder than the dewpoint of the air next to that surface.

Dew most often forms on on evenings or nights when there are few clouds, since the greenhouse effect from clouds can keep surfaces from cooling by infrared radiation loss to outer space. Calm winds at night also contribute to dew formation because a windy night keeps the lowest layers of the atmosphere warmer, and also helps evaporate any dew that might begin to form on surfaces.

Dew is made of liquid water that has condensed from some of the water vapor contained in the air.

If the layer of air next to the ground also cools to the dewpoint temperature, then fog forms as well.

Therefore the answer is underground heating and/or large fans.

Well according to Freddy Fittler as he was talking with the groundsman.....and it’s actually that the grass is so thick and that it hasn’t had time to bed down just yet.
Having said that the way Chee-Kam glided on it for the match winner, you could have been convinced it was a dry day game in September.
Hang about we don’t play in that month...,, August 😅

Bankwest Stadium under fire over slippery NRL surface conditions

Tensions are growing over the slippery conditions at the $360 million Bankwest Stadium after the quality of rugby league suffered over the weekend. But the facility’s head curator has called for patience as his staff put in place a plan to fix it.

It’s Sydney’s new $360 million state-of-the-art sporting venue that has already come under fire for a playing surface that is “like an ice-skating rink”.

But as tensions grow about the slippery night conditions at Bankwest Stadium that is resulting in a less than attractive brand of rugby league, head curator Graeme Logan has called for patience, conceding it is going to take time to get it right.

There was more criticism following Thursday night’s clash between Wests Tigers and South Sydney with long grass blamed for causing the players all sorts of troubles on a dewy night after a week of rain.

But with the NRL back at Bankwest this Friday night for the match between the Tigers and Sydney Roosters, Logan yesterday addressed the criticism and revealed that the grass would be given an extra short cut in the coming days, while a special dew suppressant would also be used.

Logan said the ground team were still fine tuning processes to best manage the new turf at the venue which has had some teething problems because of the stadium’s uniquely tight configuration.

Logan said Sydney’s unseasonably hot autumn followed by a winter cold snap also had an impact on the surface.

“We had very good growing conditions through an extremely warm autumn so there is a well-grassed pitch and we are getting a lot of dew in Western Sydney now that winter has hit,” Logan said.

“We will change up our processes this week, reducing grass length further to 26mm (down from 30mm) and use a dew suppressant to wick away the moisture from the leaf of the plant quicker.

“It is a delicate balance to present a well-grassed surface that everyone likes the look of and one that also gets the tick of approval from a playability point of view, and it takes a little time to learn the environment of new arenas.

“We are constantly working with our clubs and the players to get match conditions as good as possible.”

Not the “dew suppressant”. That always works so well. NOT. I can’t stop laughing 😂😂😂😂

I have also noticed that there seems to be as many, if not more, opposition fans at Bankwest Stadium. Though, this Friday might be different as Chooks fans don't even go to their home game, let alone travel to other stadiums. But the following game might see the Eels with a bigger fan base in attendance.

@rah53 don't be surprised if our home games get hijacked in marketing. Remember last year when we played Newcastle in Tamworth, they treated it like it was their home game, when it was ours.

What is few suppressant? Is that a fancy name for security rolling around on the grass to suck up the liquid

What is it? A gigantic sponge?

The “dew suppressant” gets mentioned a lot at Suncorp as players slip over left, right and centre. No idea what it actually is. It’s a running joke in our family.

I can't see us lasting at Bankwest...I've been there twice now and whilst I have great seats, row 9 on 40m line, the ground has Zero atmosphere (except when a streaker runs on the field), the ground is an ice rink, and at night with the lights on if you look up slightly you are blinded by the stadium lights on the roof..

Bankwest reminds me of when the Tigers were rebranded the Sydney Tigers and played out of the old Parra stadium in front of a handful of fans...it failed miserably then and here we are years later and it seems to be failing badly now...

@tigerap I was there for the games against the Eels and Raiders. I had to miss the Souths game because there was a meeting I couldn't get out of. The atmosphere was electric for the game against the Eels, but it was the Eels fans making all the noise. In the Raiders game, us Tigers fans again had zero to cheer for. The game against Souths only had a very small crowd, so it wasn't so great.

All we need is a decent crowd and a decent performance by the team, and people may change their negative views. Look at what the Raiders fans were able to create from just a couple of bays.

I've only been there twice but never thought this

Which bay are you in tigerap?

I'm getting accustomed to this high quality level of watching footy Wether we win or lose.
I haven't bought a Cambo or LO membership for some seasons now though I go to the occ game getting walk up tix... If we go back to ANZ I won't go back there.... Bankwest is the future, we need to give it time

And moving back to LO ended up well for Balmain didn't it.

I agree, folks just need to get used to it, like we did for ANZ. The trip to Parra is no worse than Homebush for most folks - in fact for me it's superior because you don't have to swap trains at Lidcombe.

Crowd v Souths was disappointing, though it looked bigger in the cloisters; I'm surprised it didn't exceed 10K because there looked to be a lot of people about. But vs Souths you'd expect a bigger turn up from two Sydney sides.

That being said, it was a Thursday game and it was cold; from memory all the Thursday games are rather poorly attended.

Raiders game - no excuse except less Raiders fans.

What I will say in criticism of Bankwest is one design failing / impact - that the NW grandstand (far side towards the park) is almost entirely corporates and media, whereas most of the punters and members are on the SE side. So when I sit down, there's almost nobody seated on the opposite side and they don't come out until kickoff (and some don't come out at all). It looks bare and there's double the number of advertising banners.

Being heavily tiered, I can hardly see any of the supporters in my grandstand and the two end bays tend to be empty, because they fill last. In all, it gives the stadium an empty feeling similar to ANZ when you see stacks of empty seats but can't really see the full seats. Therefore I can understand why it's rocking when it's packed and seems a little spartan when it's not.

Compare to Leichhardt, the Latchem Stand is mostly full as is the Hill, so it always looks busy. And if the Hill is esp. full then the place LOOKS packed even if it's only 15K.

Often it's the look that gets people in the mood for cheering.

Also IMO they don't do enough pre-game "Tigers" stuff to really make it stand out as a home game. We all know we are in Parramatta, so it needs to be sold more heavily than LO or CSS.

There's plenty of automatic branding in the stadium, but they have hardly made an effort to rev the crowd. For example you could easily have a big Tigers banner on the grass and have the announcer talk it up more. Play the Tigers music etc.

Here is a pic of what I mean about the NW stand (top left) - lots of empty space even when full.
