Utai hopes for Wests Tigers lifeline

If I was willing to give Peter Lewis a fair chance to prove himself I cannot in good concious do anything but the same for Matt Utai

Shamefully, I had vague hopes he would turn out to be our crazed, hothead prop, a la Carl Webb on a good day.

Tigers to take a punt on Matt Utai
Sport Confidential with James Phelps From: The Daily Telegraph February 01, 2011 12:00AM

FORMER Bulldog Matt Utai is attempting to resurrect his career, with the Tigers throwing the barnstorming winger an NRL lifeline.

After spending last year playing park football for the Auburn Warriors, Utai has spent the new year training with the Tigers' full-time squad, hoping to earn a first-grade recall.

The Tigers attempted to sign Utai last year after he reneged on a $130,000 deal to play in England with Celtic Crusaders, backing off after the Super League side demanded a transfer fee.

With no such hurdles this year, the Tigers have invited Utai to train with the team to see if the premiership-winning player can still be a force in the NRL.

Sport Confidential understands his former Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes - now the strength and conditioning man at Concord - is behind the punt. Utai could prove to be a handy acquisition should he get through the brutal pre-season, with winger Taniela Tuiaki on the long-term injured list.

 OMG telecrap…seriously stop reading forums guys....very funny..

Going to be really interesting to see how he goes. There has been many negative, even spiteful comments in this thread, I wish Utai all the best, lets hope he makes an awesome contribution.

There's just something about wingers and this forum…

I have never seen Utai play but judging by the comments, he sounds like a waste and if the signing is confirmed, then I guess I wish him all the best, but if Tuiaki isn't fit then Brown should get the jumper.

Seriously doubt Utai is going to end up on the wing in FG if the club does stick with him. People need to realise he's not as quick as he used to be, and he is a defensive liability out wide. He is carrying quite a bit of bulk and he'll more than likely end up in the forward pack if the club does sign him.

Forward or back just a crazy move, even if he is on a minimal contract. Sends all the wrong messages to players on their way up and on ability way behind what is required in 2011.

Hopefully he gets a run in the 9's squad. Would be interesting to see where he is at

Seem to recall the same dumb stuff being said when Pat Richards and Brett Hodgeson signed from Parra reserve grade.

Yeah Elford and Whatuira too!

Hopefully he isn't signed

I'm not hearing the best things about Mr Utai…
