Watchful Tigers keen to snare Blair

The $1.5m includes 3rd party deals, so who knows how much the club will actually pay him.

Having as many 3rd party deals as possible is the only way to compete with the richer clubs in the NRL. It effectively makes a joke out of the salary cap.

The Broncos have 25 individual 3rd party sponsers and as such put Darren Lockyer under the salary cap at $250,000, sure he gets a lot of additional 3rd party money. Broncos made the finals for about 20 years in a row and always had a great roster (they cottoned onto 3rd party deals very early).

If we want to maintain a competitive roster in the future we must get as many 3rd party deals as possible.

I believe Lote has 3rd party deals and I would be surprised if our other key players don't have them as well.

Our club is very marketable and we have a very astute CEO, I am sure that we are heading in the right direction. I believe we can be among the top of the NRL for many years as we have a great junior base and a very marketable brand.

Back to the topic if we get Blair in to our squad we will improve. If we need to pay him $300,000 under the cap and $200,000 for him in 3rd party deals a year it will be worth it as he will provide our pack the sort of player we are missing.

3rd party sponsors take care of a lot of it…

Younger guts take less to stay here....Payten only has 1 year left...NO one will leave Sheens does not want to leave.....

Why do you think that 117'2402

Blair will be a Great signing if true

Another few lines on it in todays SMH, Bellamy saying what a great player he is and how they cant match our offer but will have a talk to him over the few days and try and get him to stay. I think this could end up another one of those fruitless exercise where we are being used to up his price with the storm.

**Storm in nervous wait for Blair decision**

April 8, 2011

MELBOURNE Storm coach Craig Bellamy yesterday said his door was always open for forward Adam Blair to give him a decision about whether he will be staying with the club next year.

**However, it is believed that Storm officials have privately resigned themselves to losing Blair, who is off-contract this year, as the club cannot match the big-money deals that the New Zealand Test vice-captain has been offered, with the Wests Tigers now in prime position to snare him.**

Blair re-signed with the Storm three years ago on a comparatively modest contract and with the 25-year-old, who can play in the front and back-rows, in the prime of his career and regarded among the best forwards in the NRL, he would now command a much greater wage.

The Storm is expecting Blair to inform them of his decision within the next couple of weeks.

They are more confident about keeping emerging talent Matt Duffie however, believing that he will turn down the overtures of Sunday's opponent Parramatta, now coached by former Storm assistant Stephen Kearney and his assistant coach Brad Arthur, who guided the Storm under-20s team, of which Duffie was a member, to the 2009 premiership.

Bellamy yesterday said he could only wait for the classy forward's decision.

''I've heard the rumours like everybody else but it hasn't been confirmed so I can't shed any light on that,'' Bellamy said. ''Adam knows he can come and talk to me at any time so if that [decision] is the truth I imagine I'd hear from him soon. At the end of the day it's his decision and he'll let me know when it's the right time.

''We've gone pretty hard to try and keep him but if the rumours are true we obviously haven't gone hard enough. He's a wonderful player and we'd love to keep him but at the end of the day it's his decision and we know it's a big decision.''

Bellamy yesterday admitted losing a player the club has nurtured from his teens was disappointing.

''I think we got him when he was about 16\. We brought him over from New Zealand so it's really disappointing if that's true but we'll just wait and see and see what happens,'' Bellamy said.

Meanwhile, Bellamy said he had not given too much thought to matching wits with his former assistant Kearney on Sunday.

But he admitted that Kearney and Arthur would have more insight into the Storm systems than other opponents.

''I imagine he'd be a bit wiser about what we're going to do this week [compared] to people who haven't been at this club but at the end of the day if you start worrying about that and you start doing things that are not going to suit the team then that's not going to help anyone,'' Bellamy said.

''We'll just stick to what we think will work this week and go from there. I've always been proud of Steve for what he's done. He was a wonderful player at this club and a wonderful coach while he was here as well and he's done a great job with New Zealand.''

Again, why do we need him??? he is a good player but we have adequate forwards. Why dont we sign a goal kicking winger??? who are we going to let go???

Think you will find Storm has problems on two fronts . With the scandal last year they are using the contracts that were in the safe \ cupboard and with the big names they kept they have nothing left to upgrade with . And secondly , can imagine they will struggle to get third party sponsors because of what happened last year . (well I would not be interested if I was a 3rd party sponsor would you) also read about the winger at Storm and reports are he will probably go to Eels .

interesting, so who's on the chopping block then?

Brown;
Daniela;
Moors;
Flanagan;
Utai

These blokes will be the first to go if the Tigers sign Blair.

Yeah, don't know about losing Brown though and Utai has certainly been playing well since coming on board.

Don't really think the price is worth it.

He is worth it, he will do wonders for Fifita and Woods

I think the loyalty money is raised from $100,000 to $200,000 next year, also the cap goes up a bit as well. the players who will have to improve this year are moors who hasnt done much, also daniella has to improve & flanagan is heading back to england next year, & with 3rdpd we could probably sign blair & keep brown & utai.

i reckon payten might go too england after this season? i know we re-signed him in the off season.

When lockyer announced his retirement and there was talk about him joining the coaching staff of the broncos I heard one announcer say that payten had a similar agreement that when he retires he'll join the tigers coaching team in some capacity.

With payten moving on that would free up some money for Blair and a positon on the field as well.

Payton has an agreement with the tigers that when he finishes playing he'll b with the tigers in an off-field roll…most probably as an assistant coach...so he won't b going 2 Engalnd

That pack has premiership written all over it…

One needs to drop off the bench to make room for a back. A back on the bench is handy indeed.

if ur being sarcastic i apolagize in advance but a back on the bench is useless…wat kind of strategy is used in bringing a winger on with 2 mins left?

Look, Brown's played some good games for us, and he was an important part of our successful run last year, but the reality is he's a fringe first grade.

Adam Blair is the NZ vice captain, one of the very best forwards in the game, only 25 years old and about to enter the prime of his career. He could easily have another 7 or 8 top seasons left.

I'd easily trade a handful fringe first graders for a forward as good Blair.

was in a bar friday night before the wests tigers match and some guy who didnt drink and also a wests tigers supporter assured me that blair will be signing either monday or tuesday - make of that what you want.i bought him a beer and said hope you are right.

I just read that billy slater signed for storm for life and adam blair is going to sign with us thats why they re signed billy slater http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/cashedup-storm-sweeten-billy-bid-20110409-1d8gv.html
