We need a new coach and we need to lock it in now

Why is Cleary deemed to be a more respected coach than a Taylor? Their coaching feats are just about on a par. I think people are always overrating Cleary purely because of his calm demeanour -his coaching record is really not all that great, imo.

Really, or par?

Cleary made a GF with the Warriors and a PF with the Panthers.

Statistically they are 2 of the lower ranked clubs in the game.

So it is a stretch to say their coaching records are on par.

Yep. And Taylor got Parra to the semis after taking over mid-season and got Souths to their first semis in yonks. Not saying he's better, but I'm not confident there's much difference.

Granted Cleary did really well at the Warriors, but apart from one decent season, his time with a highly talented Penrith team was pretty poor, imo. And as Masterson has pointed out, Taylor got 2 of the generally poorer teams in Souths & Parra to the finals in his time there as well. He also did pretty well working alongside Trent Robinson to get the Roosters a Premiership in more recent times.

Sure statistically Cleary looks to be and probably is a better coach, but I really don't think the gap between them is as big as many people seem to believe. It's not like we're comparing Taylor's credentials to Bennett's or Bellamy's here! I also really think another disruption to the coaching ranks would be detrimental to the team right now - they need some stability.

If we ask the big 4 who they want, what would any recommendation be based on? Maybe we should get Mr Jenkins. Apparently he made quite an impression coaching a few of them in the Leichhardt Wanderers U/7's

Taylor did turn around the fortunes of 2 struggling sides in Parra and Souths. Would have been interesting to see how things turned out at Parra had he stuck around. Although he improved Souths from last to 7th in one year he obviously rubbed a few people the wrong way.

Garth Brennan or Jason Demetriou.

Who and who? Never heard of 'em.

Not sure why a lot of people think Clearly is a master coach, he had very good rosters to work with at Warriors and Penrith, particularly the Warriors.
There is no guarantee he would be better than JT.
Our club, from the outside at least, appear to be asleep at the wheel in relation to almost everything. Hope behind closed doors they are dosed up on No-Doze and are actually steering this club forwards. Unfortunately it doesn't really look that way ATM.

Why do people want Todd Peyton?
He trained them as kids but it's a different game now in NRL. They just want him so it can be like good old days, mates club.
F@#k that.

I don't care if JT is resigned or not but I'd much prefer him over Payten.

As I said every Thursday when I bring the young fella home from footy training I hear Todd Payten , he doesn't sound like a head coach

If you don't believe me listen to MMM Central Qld around 5.30 pm every Thursday to the Round Up program , you'll be convinced then , he is on every week

Paul Green makes Payten look very good

It's not that I particularly rate Cleary or Hasler as better talent coaches than Taylor. I think Cleary is, Hasler may not actually be a better coach but both of them are far more respected and will attract better staff and players to the club. There is more to a head coach than coaching and tbh I think the quality of the cattle a coach puts around himself, assistants, specialists etc. has more to do with on field results than the actual tactical skill the coach himself possesses.

We look like a half baked mess to anyone who looks at us and Taylor doesn't command respect. Taylor's disposition when interviewed always has an air of defensiveness. We need a head coach that commands respect. Which is why I want Hasler. We don't need our talented players to be more talented. We need a coach to bring professionalism and toughness to the club.

Why the hell is Woods dancing round the subject.. Beating around the bush? Saying they need to know who will be coach without stating he wants JT to stay… Seems like it's all a joke to him and treats the fans with disrespect..

Say something

Or say nothing

Don't beat round the bush

Mate I tell you why he is beating around the bush.

Because he wouldn't mind a change of coach.

He can't say that in public.

He can endorse JT for next year - which he did not exactly do.

Some might see that as disappointing.

Good point. But on the other hand, would they have stepped up like they did after Farah was dropped if they didn't support him? They immediately won 3 in a row, including beating the defending premiers. If they didn't support him, that would have been the perfect time to dog it and not win another game like they dogged Potter at the end of his tenure. If we didn't win another game after Farah was dropped, there's no way Taylor would still be coach.

Let hasler go. He is staying at the dogs.

Everyone knows I have no time fir JT, he is promoted above his ceiling, being a good assistant coach. He does not have the man manager or people skills to be top dog. I agree 100% that we would attract a better quality of players with a different coach. But the Cronk idea is great one, would love to get him here.

You just have to look what's available out there. It's a merry go round of the same faces come recruitment time.
Nathan Brown, Griffin etc etc. It's really depressing.

It's our destiny to persevere with what we have. We created this mess through poor recruitment and retention. Humphreys mistakes still lurk the halls of Concord let alone Mayers.
Lean years are expected.

Not my choice by any means…but given the budget and the apparent need to keep the cherubs happy as that is important..it would not surprise me 1 bit..

They're talking 4 yr deal, I'd want to know the club wasn't going to do something idiotic. You could sign on the dotted line then find out in preseason that the club has ressurected Brian Smith

Not that it seems to worry JT… but his future must be on the line if we keep leaking points in the coming weeks or dare I say months. I know we haven't had the cattle, but how many bad games does it take to get someone new into the team.
If the defense doesn't toughen by mid season I can't see him being signed up again. He's had plenty of time to refine this team and maybe just maybe HE'S NOT up too it!!!!!!!

I think this is the case tbh. However I just can't see us attracting talent with him in charge.

I wonder if Gus asked the players at Penrith who they wanted as coach, I'm guessing by who they currently have the answer is no.

Not sure what brings you to that conclusion when we've attracted players like Idris and ET.
