Wests Tigers are pleased to announce exciting additions to the Club’s coaching structure for the 2014 season.
>
Head Coach Mick Potter will welcome Todd Payten and David Kidwell on board as Assistant Coaches. The newly appointed pair will replace Royce Simmons and Steve Georgallis, who advised the Club earlier this season that they would be moving on.
>
Payten has had an exceptionally successful start to his coaching career as Wests Tigers NYC Head Coach, winning the 2012 premiership and remains in contention for this year’s title.
>
Various players in the Wests Tigers top 25 squad for 2014 have played under Payten and for Potter this promotion was a logical step up to the senior coaching ranks.
>
“Todd has wealth of playing experience and now a couple of years of NYC coaching under his belt,” Potter said.
>
“This is the natural next step in his coaching progression and he will be a valuable addition to our staff at NRL level.”
>
David Kidwell comes to the Club after impressive stints as an Assistant Coach at Melbourne Storm (2011-13) and NYC Coach at South Sydney Rabbitohs (2010). Kidwell was a standout for this role and will bring a new perspective to the Club.
>
“David will bring a hardened edge to the team and certainly has a great philosophy on Rugby League. His uncompromising approach to the game combined with his own ideas will only benefit our squad,” Potter said.
>
“I’m confident that David is the right fit for the Club and will work with our strike players on their attacking skills.”
>
With the promotion of Payten, the final piece of the Coaching structure is the appointment of Andrew Webster as full-time NYC Coach.
>
Webster spent 2012 as Assistant NYC Coach at the Wests Tigers following impressive stints at Hull KR (Assistant Coach) and Balmain SG Ball (Head Coach) where his team won the title.
>
Webster returns to the Wests Tigers after spending the 2013 season as Head Coach of the Parramatta Eels NYC team. Along with his full time role with the NYC team, Webster will also work with the NRL coaches and have involvement at the top level.
>
The Wests Tigers’ High Performance Unit will also welcome new additions for 2014 and will be led by Luke Portese. This department will specifically be responsible for Strength and Conditioning, Sports Science and Performance Analysis.
>
Strength and Conditioning Coach John Skandalis will be back on board, as will physiotherapist Peter Moussa. Daniel Kerner will join the team as an assistant physiotherapist, replacing Rehabilitation Manager Andrew Leeds.
>
After more than eight years with the Wests Tigers as the Club’s senior medical advisor, Dr Donald Kuah will take a step back in 2014 and oversee our NSW Cup team. Dr David Abraham joins the Wests Tigers with a wealth of experience in Sports Medicine, including stints with Cricket Australia, Penrith Panthers and GWS Giants.
>
Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer said that the new additions to the coaching structure mark the beginning of a new era at the Club.
>
“First and foremost, we need to acknowledge the fantastic work and effort put in by our departing staff members. They have each contributed in a special way to the Club’s success over a number of years,” Mayer said.
>
“In regards to our new structure, it is an exciting time for the Club and we believe that we have the right balance to nurture our more experienced players and to bring through many of the young stars seen on display in 2013.
>
“It’s an exciting time for the Wests Tigers and we all look forward to a very exciting 2014 and beyond.”
>
The new additions complete the 2014 coaching structure and all staff will be on board when the pre-season gets underway in early November.

top stuff!

They say every company needs new blood every five or so years help spur innovation and maintain a competitive edge.

All good moves, especially the re-evaluation of our rehab and hi performance unit.

Luke Portese got involved last off season but it must have been a short term contract.

No word on who will be doing what, I'd imagine Kidwell will be doing a good deal with our defense. The comments on Kidwell working with strike players in attack is probably about developing impact forwards such as BMM etc.

I'd still like to know if we are heading down the path of a halves coach for Brooks/Moses and maybe Sirro.

Wouldn't mind betting that either Payten or Kidwell will be groomed for the top job in 2015 the only way I can see Potter staying on is if he gets us top 4, but they all seem pretty decent appointments none the less

I don,t understand a couple of the appointments but all in all the direction is great news with many new faces bringing new ideas and hopefully a way of minimising injury , at least as a fan there is a positive vibe around the club for 2014.

SMH reported Fittler was a possibility. Wouldn't mind seeing that. Brett Kimmorley is also now out of a job as Sticky doesn't want to keep him on at the Raiders. Could also be an option.

He was here all year.

Not sure on Payten as D coach….he has been 'taught' by Simmons

He always had a good defensive technique himself though. Time will tell anyway. But at least the club has been more proactive than it has been in some time with the changes they are making.

No excuses for Potter in 2014 …. If he can't make a go of it under this scenario then that's it.

What are your expectations for 2014 Knuckles ??

10th -13th for me , this is still part of the transition Brooks will have some good days , but he will have some bad as well

And we don't have a five eight in place either

True.
He needs to be given a fair go
It seems a bit 'odd' though to me this appointment, defense is very much about communication, and Todd was one very quiet dude…though on the other hand very much a team player

honestly can't see us coming 13th… I mean, with a consistent spine, teddy hitting a bit of form and all these young guys starting from round 1, not 10 onwards will give us a massive boost in those first 5-7 rounds which have always stuffed up our season. And obviously. Injuries.

For me, Top 10 is acceptable under potter in 2014.

Maybe potter will be looking at defence?

No freddy? Disappointed :frowning:

And what players have we recruited who will make such a dramatic change to our side ??We don't know who our spine will even be Round 1

There are more factors than that to consider. Injuries, the draw in the early rounds.

We are putting together a formidable team, but they still don't have the toughness to slog it out with the top 4-6 teams.

How does the draw matter? it'll be as bad as this year or better. Sure, if we get good teams first few rounds we'll do poorly but then we'll get the bad teams later on so it'll even out by the end.
