Wests Tigers announce leadership group for 2022

Tamou would have to be our worst captain so far. At least Woods was effective as far as his on-field performances went.
I disagree. Woods, as captain of this club, actively shopped himself, Tedesco and Moses around to other clubs. All the while, he and the others stringed the club along, implying that they were seriously considering our offer, when they had no intention of accepting.

It was the grossest act of betrayal in WT’s history – perhaps NRL history.

His on-field performances are irrelevant to our assessment of him as captain.

He was a traitor, pure and simple.

For heavens sake Benny, if you truely care for this club then please just shut up.

What the f is happening’ Tigers slammed over β€˜embarrassing’ five-captain debacle
Rugby league great and former Wests Tigers board member Benny Elias has blasted the club’s decision to appoint five captains this season.

The club has announced James Tamou, Luke Brooks, Adam Doueihi, Ken Maumalo and Tyrone Peachey will share the captaincy duties in 2022.

It came just days after last season’s skipper Tamou said he was happy to let somebody younger at the club have the job.

Elias told foxsports.com.au he’s spent countless hours defending the Tigers in recent years but said the latest decision from coach Michael Maguire β€œblew me over”.
β€œI can’t work it out for the life of me,” Elias said.

β€œI was very vocal on Doueihi being the captain. I just can’t believe there are five different people.

β€œThere should be a leader in any organisation, especially a football side where you have a captain that you respect and follow through good and bad.

β€œWhen you go into a board room to make a decision, you look for your CEO to make the decision. When the referee wants to talk to the captain, who’s he going to talk to - the five of them?

β€œWhy is it five captains? Why not three or nine? How did we land on five? It’s embarrassing.”

Elias was left equally unimpressed with the Tigers in their heavy loss to Manly in a trial last weekend.

The Tigers were belted 28-4 and showed little improvement on their disastrous 2021 campaign.

β€œThey say it’s only the trials but if it’s only the trials, why play them,” Elias said.

β€œWe got dusted up in the second half against Manly, our performance was okay in the first half but look I struggle to continue to be positive.

β€œIt breaks my heart and I can imagine how the supporters are, but you stick strong.

β€œI’m a big believer in sticking strong to my club which I love and I continue to support them but sometimes I just pull my hair out thinking what the f is happening.

Was more referencing Brooks....
But yeah, I feel Hastings has so much pressure on him this time round - He needs all the simple he can get.
- He's a legends son
- He failed last time
- He's almost pre-ordained as the WT's saviour
- He's talked up a pretty big game....

I hope he kills it...
Imagine if they both kill it this year and we lay a good foundation this season for an even bigger 23. Thats my hope for the year

There blowing whiskers again appointing 5 captains, means no one suitable.
Leadership is what we need looks like another rebuilding year already.

Tamou - Not enough field time bench by season end.
Doueihi - Obvious choice but out Injured for part of season.
Brooks - Given more responsibility but not a leader nor talker?
Tyrone Peachy - New Recruit what about longer term club players?
Ken Maumalo - Fairly new Winger can't be heard from the sideline?

"On-field performances are irrelevant"?
Not so sure about that. So if on-field performances don't matter why not just employ a motivational speaker to captain the club on match days?
On-field efforts are more important that talking garbage off-field: or else Moses Mbye would go down as a legend of WT.

I really hate this. I honestly don’t know why it’s so hard to choose a captain unless absolutely no player has shown leadership qualities during off-season. I know AD is the clear cut choice and is injured but surely you could find someone else in the interim at least.

I don’t think having five rotating captains will ever really work. We tried this under Ivan in 2018 if I recall and reverted to co-captains the next year.
After reading the article posted earlier this afternoon with quotes of Maguire talking about rotating captains, felt that I should come back to this, admit that you were spot on and shake my head in disbelief.

All good. Honestly I overreacted to the captaincy news and come to think of it, I read the plans for rotating captaincy from a different news article separate to the Tigers website.
