Very happy we didn’t appoint Flanagan. He probably is better than Gardiner and Cayless in experience wise, plus his credentials show that. Looking forward to seeing what next season holds for both lads.

You are very happy we didn’t appoint him because he is better than these two?

I'm very happy we didn't appoint him because he is a drug cheat.

Maybe so but he is what we needed.

I don't believe in risking the health of our players.

You have zero evidence that would be the case

Happened before

Leopards, spots and all that?

What has he done to show that he has changed? Has he accepted responsibility? Admitted fault?

I don’t care

Neither do I because we made the right decision to keep him away from our players.

Remains to be seen.
For now colour me sceptical.

Doesn't remain to be seen because regardless of what happens going forward we made the right decision.

You have no way of qualifying, nor quantifying that presently.

Yes I do, we didn't employ someone who was a risk to our players health, that is the right decision in my opinion regardless of our results moving forward.

Exactly. It is your opinion only.
This is why I said “it remains to be seen”. That is a fact and it trumps your opinion.

There is no fact that can Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon maintaining a safe environment for your players.

That is not the point we are discussing.

It is 100% the point, Flanagan is a risk to the health of players. I am very pleased he wasn't employed.

It’s not the point.
You proudly boast that irrespective of how these new coaches go, we’ve made the correct decision. I said that remains to be seen.
Going off on tangents about possibilities is fantasy only. For all you and I know, Flanno may have been the missing piece to a tilt at the premiership.
See, I can do it as well.

I don't care if he is the missing piece to a premiership, it is still the right choice, that is the point. It doesn't remain to be seen because I don't care what difference he could have made.

Ok so what you are saying is it’s only your opinion on this matter that counts?
IMO talking in absolutes about future occurrences is the height of arrogance and ignorance.

IMO it’s not win at all costs.

Win at all costs? Do you really think he would have doped our players?

Dunno. He might have turned a new leaf.Do you let a known pedophile talk to your kid? There’s no proof they’ll do anything in the future.

That’s not a good analogy.

Why? We are playing real life here. It’s definitely uncomfortable. But there are real ramifications from decisions made by the club. Where you draw the line is opinion. Apologies if I stepped over the mark.

I do believe as a coach, he could have been an asset. Moot point now though.

I said I consider your opinion wrong, as you consider my opinion wrong. This is a forum for opinions and it would be boring if we all agreed. Some topics my opinion can be changed, on others I am unmovable. On this it is pretty black and white for me, I actually think drug cheats should be banned for life and people who were involved in a program where players were being given injections that they did not know the substances of, are the lowest of the low, they actually put the players health at risk to improve their footy team in an illegal manner.

I am very black and white on this subject.

I have stated this before but Stuart O'Grady was one of my all time favourite sport people until the day he confessed to using performance enhancing drugs. Since that day I haven't read anything about him and refuse to watch thing on TV about him. I was extremely disappointed when he was used in the Olympic coverage. I have seen drugs pretty much destroy a sport I love and have no time for anyone involved in it.

I'm very happy we didn't appoint him because he is a drug cheat.

Maybe so but he is what we needed.

You have zero evidence that would be the case

I don’t care

He has shown in the past that he doesn't accept the consequences of his actions. I don't know what he would do, so in my opinion it is not worth the risk.

That’s a fair call.
I have no way of knowing either, but suspect lightning would not strike twice in this regard and therefore have stopped short of claiming that it will.
I do believe as a coach, he could have been an asset. Moot point now though.

I agree, if you can view him solely as coach he would be an asset. Lightning might not strike twice in this regard, but that is the risk I am not willing to take.

I guess my point is I would not put myself (or an organisation I ran) in a position to be surprised. There’s probably no data available to assess the risk of reoffending coaches that dope their players. If it passes your sniff test then that’s where we disagree.

So is everyone happy with assistant coaches ???

Define happy? I've got no issue with Gardiner, I think he's done a good job as evidenced from KOE last season, and the players respect him which is also a positive. Cayless...who knows? The Roosters don't tend to hire mugs so he'd have to have some ability. I'm hoping both assistants can take a bit of pressure off Madge and earn the respect of the players.

Biggest issue we have, and have had for years now is a lack of mental resolve. We've really lacked that since our last finals appearance and how we regain it, I don't know. I still think we have too many players who are just content to be playing FG and simply lack the will to do what is necessary to win the tough games.

I think your last line is close to our biggest problem, I think we have a lot of players that like to go out at the weekend and tell people they are an NRL player.

I think the line of we've got too many players happy playing FG and not willing to go the extra mile is a major problem we need fixed I understand needing to relax away from footy but staying up all night playing cod the day before a game and posting it on insta isn't a good look

Wests Tigers have today confirmed the appointment of Ben Gardiner and Nathan Cayless as Assistant Coaches to Head Coach Michael Maguire for the 2022 NRL season.

Gardiner joined Wests Tigers in 2021 as Head Coach of the club’s Knock-On Effect NSW Cup side, Western Suburbs — leading the Magpies to second on the ladder before the competition was suspended. Prior to that, Gardiner spent time in a number of different coaching roles with South Sydney, Cronulla, North Sydney, City Origin and NSW U/20s, as well as an assistant to Maguire with the New Zealand national side.

A former captain of Parramatta and New Zealand following extensive first-grade experience at both club and international level, Cayless joins Wests Tigers after serving as an NRL Assistant Coach at the Sydney Roosters. Prior to that, the former prop coached both the New Zealand Warriors (2018-19) and Wentworthville (2016-17) at the reserve-grade level.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe welcomed Gardiner and Cayless to their new roles.

“On behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to welcome and congratulate Ben and Nathan on their appointment as our Assistant Coaches,” Pascoe said.

“Ben and Nathan are both young, impressive coaches who we know will add a lot to our coaching staff and playing group through their relationships, knowledge and work ethic.”

Wests Tigers Coach Michael Maguire said he was looking forward to working with the duo.

“I’ve spent time with Ben and Nathan at international level and know they will grow our players while adding a lot to our staff and club,” Maguire said. “I’m looking forward to working with them to build our squad and getting stuck into the pre-season together.”

Wests Tigers players will report for pre-season training in early November before the full squad resumes officially on November 17.

How the bloody hell do we win the KOE Cup when they pinch our superstar coach .......the room is spinning ....everything is getting dark ......

Well we know Cayless must be defensive coach as the Magpies defence under Gardiner last year was rubbish. The attack was good though.

Hopefully he can help bring out the best in posters line Tuilagi.

Shame there wasn't much first grade potential in last year's side though

Club has made a call on the assistant coaches , now is the time to back them until they look like they are failing , we need to start getting behind all the club decisions and support them until we see from results there is an issue , get on board people start to think positive , I know it’s hard but let’s just give it a go , we need more positive chat than negative , add a couple new additions and who knows , top 8 hear we come

You are comparing ice cream with dog turds.

Even then, CMON.
Flanno had a team with Nothing. He talked of buying used Gym equipment then renting a truck to drive it down to the stadium.
When someone like Stephen Dank turns up saying "I am a doctor I will give legal supplements to your players" ofcourse he is saying yes, because the Sharks then had Nothing. You would not have known and neither would I. A coach would have said "hey doc, is this prohibited or allowed?" doc says allowed.

Now, sure Wayne Bennett may have asked questions. But were talking a first year coach.

Lets rollcall for a second of our past coaches. Who would have stopped Dank?
Terry Lamb - Nope,
Tim Sheens - maybe, he has the experience and knowledge. though is probably not detail orientated enough.
Mick Potter - No, he was still too new and would have rolled with it.
Jason Taylor - Yes, but only because he and Dank got into a verbal argument about coaching styles and Taylor punches him out. Stopping for actual medicine reasons, NO.
Ivan Cleary - No, far too easy going. His signings were too light on the details and the reason why were in trouble.
Michael McGuire - Maybe.

Flanagan got a very hard coaching trap. He built a wooden spoon team from scratch at a club which then had Nothing. We would not have caught Dank if he came here and Flanagan has learned from his lesson.

Rate Coaches on coaching stuff, yes this is a part of their job but not their main focus. Flanagan as a coach, got the main focus.

Ok, I think we have made a huge mistake.

So Nathan Cayless. A really tough player, the Eels were Hindmarsh and Cayless and clearly Cayless could pull off the big hits. Physical conditioning, tackling etc would be fine. Cayless definitely inspired people.

Except remember the Eels. Nathan Hindmarsh was in every tackle. He literally wasn't repicked for State of Origin in a struggling period because Hindmarsh wasn't seen as a Prop. He did everything. (yes he was picked again for a token game). My point, the Eels had no structure when Cayless was Captain.

Yes Parramatta was a strongly defensive side and yes Cayless was the other Parramatta player making the tackle with Hindmarsh. But that is defense through bulk, not smarts.

Is Cayless going to coach Wressling? Cayless retires after playing Melbourne so he faced the Chicken wingers. But is he going to coach it into people? We are often regarded as Soft. Several games we just let tries in. We don't wressle anywhere well enough compared to the other teams.

Maybe I am wrong. Cayless reminds me of Todd Payten and as a player Cayless was far better. I really hope he brings his Grit to the coaching role as that is what we need. Nathan's brother Jason Cayless did NOTHING as a player so I have to wonder.

Gardiner IMHO we saw 2021 and well he is back. No real change so were back to 13th. He has that experience across Sydney and he brings this, but is that what we need.

I would have gone totally different:
Shane Flanagan + Josh Morris. I know not John but Josh Morris. Brett is working at Easts, Josh would have been perfect to coach defense into our centers. We need someone to get good defensive combinations in our back line.

So what's the go if Madge doesn't last very far into next season? Will the club have someone external ready to come in or will Gardiner caretake the season to show what he has for the top job in 2023 and beyond?
