In October 2018, Nathan Cayless resigned as head coach of Wentworthville. The Parramatta Eels also announced that they would be ending their partnership with Wentworthville after the conclusion of the 2019 season. Parramatta CEO Bernie Gurr spoke to the media saying "Out of the review we found if we want to be a successful development club we need to have the Parramatta Eels in the ISP. Then you've got a clear one-club mentality".

Yes, this "one club mentality" is exactly what Coach Sheens advocated all those years ago bringing in the one reserve grade at the Wests Tigers.

It was an argument that he lost. Will he win it this time?

Not happy that both have links with Madge. Could argue that we have replaced on set of stooges with another.

I will give a pass mark to Gardiner's appointment. The NSW cup side looked good this year and was largely made up of young guys.

Cayless I am not so sure on. The roosters were not keen on keeping him despite losing an assistant & I am sure I read he had previously been moved on from Parra & the Warriors, who don't exactly have a history of success.

I would have preferred someone other than Cayless (& not Flanagan) but time will tell.

I agree it’s same for same just younger .. Gardiner no problem but the other assistant should of come totally from outside the Tigers and coaches system.
The talk was good from the club initially then straight back to jobs for the boys , there is some very insecure issues at the club .
This is the first fail for Emperor Sheens !

Hey champion @Snake, I enjoy your thinking (usually) but the newly appointed assistant coaches have been named 24 hours and can't have failed yet - pre-season training hasn't even started. In any event, they are NOT the same coaches as before, they are bringing different and new skill-sets in communication with the players.
I think they need to be seen in action and like everyone in the coaching area need review based on performance. -

He actually didn’t… since 2007 all Wests Tigers contracted players have played for the one feeder team..

I’m a fan of the assistant coaches they make a lot of sense to me. Young and aspiring first grade coaches.

Word from my roosters mate (yeah, ashamed to admit I have one) is that club credits cayless for improvement in jwh's play, particularly his becoming more consistent. His time also coincided with improved Angus chrichton.

When we signed Momo and materson he said club was upset to lose Momo but wasn't fussed about materson. He didn't know why they didn't want materson.

Sounds promising.

I might him mixed up with someone else but wasn't Gardener a school teacher as well this year and if so I assume he will be going full time now in this role?

Do we know who is taking over from Gardener for the reserve side?

Seems like a nice guy who players enjoy playing for. Might also keep some of them on the books as he knows there games pretty well.

I think his background as a teacher and teaching kids from a variety of backgrounds has naturally developed his communication skills to the point where he is able to make people feel comfortable but also get the best out of them. Barking orders at people these days doesn't seem to have much of an effect unless you're in the military or LE where it's ingrained in the culture.

Some comments asking what people have seen in Gardiner?
What I liked about Gardiner's team this year is that they really put in with their individual tasks but also worked well as a team. And the games where they didn't go that well in the first half were always turned around with good tactics and efforts.
And it was obvious he had great rapport with the players when he was communicating with them. He was very personal with his one-on-one discussions and the players were always very attentive and communicative with him in return.
Just those points alone tick plenty of boxes for me.
Man-managing is extremely important and Gardiner seems to have a big upside in this area, on top of being able to coach footy.
From what I've seen he could go a long way I reckon.

👍👍👍

Unicorns.. Sheens didn’t care what they were called as long as the players played for the one team..

I hope these guys Assistants care as much about the culture and work ethic required to turn this club around as Madge does.

Too much of the same garbage for almost 20 years.

Unfortunately not the same as our NRL team

From what I observed this year I reckon Gardiner is in the job for the right reasons mate - very obvious he was heavily invested in his players. And they seemed to respond to that as well. I was pretty happy that he has decided to step up his coaching role with us.

Can't comment on Cayless in that regard.

I read somewhere earlier today that one of the reasons Cayless got the gig was because he was very impressive in the interview explaining how he could improve our player's defensive technique. Can't find the reference now, but sounds promising.

Though if I was interviewing for the role and didn't say that I had ideas on how to improve the defence I'd have rocks in my head

Given the state of our defence, saying the correct things would not be a difficult task.
Let’s hope he can effect actual change.
He knows personally how to do it…can he teach and will they listen?
