IVAN Cleary has confirmed he would be interested in coaching the Wests Tigers, but says the club is yet to make contact with him.

Cleary has been labelled the leading contender to replace sacked Jason Taylor in the role.

He denied the job had already been offered to him when speaking on NRL Tonight.

“Not true, that’s flat out not true. I’ve had no contact. The word is they’re going through due process and that’s probably the right thing to do,” Cleary said.

Asked if he would take the job if it was offered he hinted he would, although expressed some reservations.

“I’d certainly listen. There’s a lot of upside at that club. I’d look into it,” he said.

“I’ve said many times that I’d like to get back in (to NRL coaching) but it would have to be the right job as well.”

Cleary admitted perceived instability at board level would need to be addressed with him before he would take the role.

“Yeah because that’s a big part of the whole operation,” he said.

“It does start at the top, and I know there’s been some change there. It’s easy to say there’s instability because a lot of coaches have come and gone but there’s been change at the top and sometimes that brings stability.”

Taylor was sensationally sacked by the club on Monday in the wake of a 46-6 loss to Canberra on Sunday. They won big in round one but consecutive losses — in which they collectively scored one try — proved the last straw for the board.

Cleary - who was shown the door by Penrith at the end of 2015 - said he empathised with Taylor who is now out of a job.

“What has been missed in this is Jason Taylor. I feel for him, it was a tough day.”

Since Monday’s bombshell speculation has been rife as to who accepts the poison chalice that is the Wests Tigers coaching position. They’ve had three head coaches in six years.

Cleary is undoubtedly the best credentialed rugby league coach currently without a job.

He has previously coached the Warriors and the Panthers for a combined 252 games. His record sits at 121 wins, 128 losses, and three draws.

He was Dally M coach of the year in 2014 when he took Penrith to the preliminary final. In 2011 he coached the Warriors to the grand final, only to lose to Manly in the big dance.

Tigers premiership winner Todd Payten is another who has been mentioned as a possible Taylor successor.

Fairfax Media reported on Tuesday the Wests Tigers could take up to two months to officially appoint a new coach.

Andrew Webster has been promoted from assistant to act as interim coach.

Cleary is the best option in my opinion. Des is balking at a 2 year deal with the Dogs 1.1m p.a as it is based on performance. It drops significantly if they don't win finals games.
If Wests give him a 5 year 5m deal without incentives he will take the cash.
Cleary is cheaper and spends less on footy operations but if Wests group want to spend their way out of this Des can be had.

Gould came out and publicly and backed him after sacking him so Inthink it speaks volumes.

Says he's not even been contacted by the club yet lol

On a side note …I wonder if Megan Barnard can coach ??
I'm sure the boys would play for her lol

Gamesmanship. Of course they'd have contacted him. If he's telling the truth, Pascoe and co should be following Taylor out the door.

Another quote from him when asked about if he'd be interested "I'd certainly listen. There's a lot of upside at that club, I'd look into it."

What are they waiting for?

Why did Cleary feel the need to go on TV ?
Was it a paid gig ?
I'm sure he's been contacted well before Taylors termination .
Is Cleary a Liar ?

Could be a couple of reasons why he might not be telling the whole truth.

1\. The bloke has class and doesn't want to twist the knife out of respect to the guy who has just got the bullet. He remained pretty quiet about his axing from Penrith.

2\. He doesn't want to allude to the fact that his possible future employer had already made a decision on JT's future prior to the season starting and were waiting for the right circumstances to axe him.

We assume it's going to be Cleary because of his link to Pascoe. What about Egan's connection to Des?

I honestly can't see any other option than Cleary, the more I think about it. He's experienced, with specific experience with young teams. He's still relatively young in coaching terms, so his best is to come. He has a strong link with the CEO. Most importantly - he can start yesterday.

Payten strikes me as a name thrown out by his agent rather than a realistic proposition. Not sure which of the current assistants or other miscreants would be wanting to throw their hats in the ring.

True, I was humouring Hobbo though.

Unless we break out the biscuits and hit up Harry T for some development coin we're not a sniff of getting Des.

Fair enough …..
But I still can't see the point of Cleary going on TV to deflect questions in regards to maybe becoming the new Wests Tigers coach the day after the previous coach was punted .
It was more like a dodgy awkward A Current Affair sloppy style interview .
Seemed pointless IMO .

Slim chance that he was already slotted to discuss other things and obviously the goings on with WT hijacked the interview?

Des is currently employed - we'd have to pay compensation or some such to the Dogs to release him.
Plus he comes with ridiculous off field demands - facilities, staff, procedures. Not sure we could offer him that.
I think it's a non-starter for a few reasons.

i like cleary and think that he's a great motivator and a great coach.

however, i'd prefer geoff toovey or really go in hard for des hasler- go in with all we have for des.

OK so if it is Cleary, and a lot of people think he can indeed coach, I mean he comes to the club with a fair amount of respect and credibility despite having been sacked from his last role… how many poor results would it take for people to turn on him?

Does he get 2 seasons? 2 seasons and 3 rounds?

I'm not nay-saying, I think the guy has talent and a lot going for him, and that game-cred will go a long way compared to the already substantial number of people who disliked JT before he even joined the club.

I'm just saying out loud that I know our club and supporters, we have a poor history and a significant number of supporters turn on the coach fairly quickly, even inside the first year, if the results don't come.

If Cleary does indeed take over and we make the 8 this season, you can expect him to be allowed to stay on for some time I would think.

It's a very good question. In a vacuum I would say at least two years. Possibly three.
Sadly things are never judged in a vacuum.
JT came in with a young, inexperienced squad with salary cap issues, so we all knew any improvement had to come from within. For whatever reason, that wasn't really happening on any great scale, despite an improved ladder position this year. Obviously the situation was also heavily impacted by the 2018 situation, which probably made the club panic a little more than they would have otherwise.
I do sympathise with him a bit, as there were some outside factors at play, but then again that's kinda part of the job, and I wasn't seeing enough on the field to make me believe that this squad was going places.
I agree with the decision to move JT on, but the timing is ludicrous and suggests all sorts of incompetence further up the line.

I am not a huge Cleary fan, but I do respect what he's done at both NZW and Penrith - develop a squad from the ground up. I know th Penrith situation was due to a cap rebuild (similar to ours) - don't remember what happened at the start of his nz reign.
I think he'll have a bit of pull in the market, and may net us some decent players for next year, as we currently have about four. A lot of questions though.

As for Potter - I felt he was harshly done by as he seemed to be coaching with one hand behind his back. He didn't choose his own staff, had Mayer and the board signing players without his approval and literally against his wishes and suffered a ridiculous injury run. That first half of 2014 was the best we've played in years.
Then again, it seemed the players may not have really respected him, and the injury run may have been his own doing to an extent.

Agree 14 was the best and most balanced we looked and Potter had Brooks and even Tedesco playing better got the best out of Blair ans Thompson and actually bought guys over like Taupau Austin and others.

Jt hardly got anyone over.

Always feel jealous when I see her glow around Brendan Julian on Fox lol.

Well, consider this; it seems that Cleary has already got the job of Head Coach but what has he done to improve things? I say sack him now before things get any worse.

What an over-dramatisation my the journo, several clubs have this kind of turn-over, esp if you include interim (to year-end) coaches who were not kept on the following year.

Parra Eels have had 3 coaches in 6 years. When they appointed Brad Arthur it was the 7th coach in 9 years.

Dragons have had 3 coaches in 7 years. When they appointed McGregor it was the 3rd coach in 4 years.

Roosters have had 3 coaches in 9 years, but when they appointed Robinson, it was the 5th coach in 8 years.

Manly have had 3 head coaches in 6 years.

Warriors have had 6 coaches in the past 7 years.

Knights have had 4 coaches in the last 6 years.

Panthers have had 4 coaches in the last 6 years.

Sounds like a subtle way of saying "give me a call Justin".

Seriously what odds Pascoe didn't already speak to Cleary before Taylor was sacked? They know each other from Penrith and even if they did not you would expect some early diligence?

We are fools if we didn't

You would like to think if we replace Taylor it has to be a step forwards , not sideways or backwards

I do it at work all the time, but in reverse.

I say things like "I spoke with XXX yesterday" when actually I emailed them and they emailed me back. But it sounds better when they think you've actually bothered to pick up the phone and track that person down, have a conversation.
