WESTS TIGERS - COACH IVAN CLEARY..OFFICIAL

I really think that Cleary, if he is chosen as coach, should allocate two on field co-captains. One being Woods who leads by example and takes the hard knocks and yards on field to inspire his team. The other co-captain being a player like Moses who likes to chatter throughout the match to motivate and keep the players' minds on their game for the entire duration of the match. Unfortunately this is not one of Woods' strong points. Making Moses co-captain would also help to keep him with Wests Tigers next season. I would be disappointed if Cleary did not make a decision like this.

The way Moses is playing atm he should be captain in reserve grade.

The Wests Tigers will meet with Ivan Cleary this week to sort out a deal that could parachute the coach in to rescue their season as early as round six against the Cowboys.

Fairfax Media understands the Wests Tigers board has given the green light for the club to head hunt Cleary and will open negotiations with the former Panthers and Warriors coach this week.

Speculation has been rife surrounding Cleary and a potential move to Belmore to replace Des Hasler as Canterbury coach, however it appears almost certain he will end up at the Tigers as early as after this Sunday's game against the Dragons.

The Tigers are conscious of the fact they don't want this season to spiral out of control and are holding on to hope of playing finals football for the first time since 2011.

The club is also mindful of the fact there may be other NRL jobs available to Cleary if they delay negotiations and are keen to put pen to paper.

The club hierarchy were quick to point out a noted "improvement in effort" from the Tigers against Melbourne on Sunday, however they were unable to put in a complete performance against an out of sorts Storm line-up.

But their skipper Aaron Woods insists it's too early to put a line through their 2017 campaign despite winning just one of their first four games.

"This season is not a write off," Woods said.

"As we saw yesterday, we should have beaten Melbourne. A couple of things didn't go our way. We played a good 50 or 60 minutes, but that's not enough to compete with NRL standards.

"We're still a massive chance and I believe in the boys we have. There's no bloke not trying. Sunday was just one step in the right direction. We have a lot more steps we need to take but we know we have to work hard and get ourselves out of it."

Cleary is the master of the rebuild, taking the Warriors to the grand final and also overhauling the Panthers into the premiership force they've now become.

The pending appointment of Cleary will mark the beginning of a significant period for the Tigers, who remain hopeful of retaining the "big four" of Woods, James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks.

Brooks will miss this Sunday's clash with the high-flying St George Illawarra, however Mitchell Moses is expected to recover from a sternum knock to take his place in the side.

If negotiations progress as quickly as hoped, it will be quite a baptism of fire for Cleary taking his new side to Townsville on the competition's hardest road trip for a clash against the Cowboys.

If there is a delay in the club's dealings with Cleary, the Tigers' following game is against the Eels on Easter Monday.

Cleary has a monumental task ahead of him. While off the field the club is enjoying the largest growth in membership of any team in the NRL, on the field their best players are frustrated by the lack of success.

"I've played just two semi-final matches," Woods said.

"That's frustrating. I've played more Origins and games for Australia than finals. Lucky I have got to play in big games because of them. It's something I want to turn around. I want to play in big games for this club. It's not ideal the situation we're in at the moment."

While the off-contract players want to know who will be coaching the Tigers before committing to the club, they insist they aren't part of the plans to recruit the coach.

"I don't want to know because I keep getting dragged through everything," Woods said.

"No one believes what I say. It is what it is."

I hope this is right, Cleary needs to be here tomorrow, not next week, and if we keep farting around he might not be here at all.

I understand your frustration but the club is only one party in the negotiation. Maybe Cleary is quite happy to let things ride out for a bit as he watches his demand rise (and with it his potential salary).

Get the feeling that this could be the last straw for many WT's fans if we don't sign Cleary

We need a proven coach, not another rookie, someone who can man manage, Cleary fits the bill and has previous work experience with Pascoe. We would have had the inside run and the perfect opportunity to get the deal done, if we miss out it will be another poor managerial mistake from the club.

I think you're right happy. If the club mucks this up, they are going to lose A LOT of goodwill from fans.

If we miss Cleary it will be because of our clubs history

In our short history we have learnt absolutely nothing , and everyone can see that from a mile away

When you take off the tangerine , black and white shades off for a moment you wonder why Cleary would be considering it when there are some far stronger clubs with far better histories looking for coaches

And even if we do manage to sign Cleary then how many seasons will it take for us to get a roster that is competitive ??

I'm not confident , if I was in Cleary's shoes you'd have to be desperate to want to come here

I think if we move fast it can be achievable for 2018, but only if we get him ASAP.

Too late 851 … we should have done this 6 months ago if this was the plan

It will be for me. Not because i think he is the be all and end all, but because i believe he is the best available for this club . Certainly better than what we have had and management has had every opportunity to have all this in place and get the deal done. It will just show me, that incompetence is so deep in this club i can't see a way out and ill be buggered if im going to keep paying for me and the boy to be members and parting with hard earned money for the same old crap.

Ive never threatened to walk away before, but ive supported Balmain and now Wests Tigers for 35+ years. All through those times, there were bottom feeding years, but always hope, but i feel if this all falls apart, finally the hope is gone. Ill just be disappointed 3 times a year at Origin instead, although i think change is coming there Happy

Like you Furious,I was a Balmain boy all my footy life, now Iam a Wests Tigers Tragic and love the club, however I can't understand the love for Brooks and Moses as long as it has been, clearly to me,and only in my opinion they are overated and overhyped kids who did really well in NYC,they are not NRL standard playmakers yet demand big dollars….that is what will lose me if they get the big money they want for very little performances in the last three seasons....

I honestly think Moses will come good. He was shite last year until he took up his option. These blokes tell you they don't let their contract crap interfere with their footy but it's rubbish. Theyre human beings and like all of us don't like an uncertain future. Whether its with us or elsewhere, once his future is settled ill be very surprised if he's not "back".

The unfortunate part of this is these 2 halves (or their manager) pulled the same stunt last year. Now he has 4 of them and the same disruptions are eating away already this year. Contracts have been on the table for months…....they obviously are not passionate about this club, and thats ok, just man up and sign elsewhere and let us get on with signing players for our future. Im glad Pascoe is talking deadlines.

There is literally only one NRL job available.

27/3/17
Ivan Cleary will be the Wests Tigers’ new head coach, according to Fox Sports chief NRL reporter James Hooper.

And he could be in charge as early as this week.

“Negotiations are ongoing, it’s just wrapped up in a little bit of red tape at the moment,” Hooper told NRL Tonight.

“They’ve got a football committee appointed, they’ll then make a recommendation to the board.

“It could happen as early as this week, if not, then absolutely Ivan Cleary will be in the seat at Concord next week.”

Meanwhile, the club has signed ex-Queensland Origin forward Chris McQueen.

“It’s a three-year contract, worth around the $1.2 million mark,” Hooper said.http://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/teams/tigers/canterbury-bulldogs-make-massive-play-to-poach-wests-tigers-skipper-aaron-woods-nrl-media-watch/news-story/374f2b4d8180b3c2a49b260b09a9f51a
