Campbelltown Council pushes for NSW, federal government to cough up cash for Campbelltown Stadium upgrade after Leichhardt Oval’s $30m funding pledge. A multimillion funding pledge to revamp Sydney’s ageing Leichhardt Oval has spurred another Sydney council to lobby for its share of the government funding pie.
A multimillion funding pledge to revamp Sydney’s ageing Leichhardt Oval has spurred another Sydney council to lobby for its share of the government funding pie.
Campbelltown Council is calling on the NSW and Federal and Governments to help bankroll upgrades to Campbelltown Sports Stadium in a move to address the ageing state of the facility and increased demand from sporting groups.
Mayor George Greiss said the council-owned stadium is facing similar issues to Leichhardt Oval which recently received $30 million in State and Federal funding for much-needed upgrades.
Campbelltown Sports Stadium dates back to the 1950s and there are concerns the ground could miss out on major events if upgrades are not carried out in coming years.
Campbelltown Council has released a business case showing upgrades are needed to the main grandstand as well as female changing room facilities, food and drink areas and other amenities.
The stadium attracted more than 200,000 visitors last year.
The business case shows a basic upgrade would cost $10 million while a complete redevelopment of the stadium would require a budget of $175 million.
A $35 million pledge – similar to the funding pledged to Leichhardt Oval – would enable more seating, food and beverage outlets, lighting, a new LED big screen and amenities.
Councillor George Brticevic said the ageing state of parts of the stadium were comparable to Leichhardt Oval.
Leichhardt Oval has received NSW and Federal Government funding.
“Leichhardt Oval is in dire straits and I don’t deny Inner West Council getting that funding because it’s a very old ground, but it is located in part of the Prime Minister’s federal seat and there’s always been criticism of pork barrelling,” he said.
“Our stadium is weathering as well, it’s getting old and soon it won’t be fit for purpose unless we get funding.
“In a couple of years time we could lose the games that are played at Campbelltown to other stadiums such as CommBank or Allianz.”
The stadium dates back to the 1950s.
The funding plea comes as the NSW Government faces calls to upgrade a growing list of Sydney sporting grounds including Brookvale Oval on the northern beaches and Shark Park in the Sutherland Shire.
Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss said upgrades would address increased usage of the site which last year hosted 25 major events and attracted 250,000 visitors.
A redevelopment of the main grandstand would increase the seating capacity of the stadium from 17,000 to 25,000 – making it about the same size as Penrith Stadium.
Mr Greiss has written to both the NSW and Federal Government sports ministers to make the funding pitch.
“With West Tigers and Macarthur FC using Campbelltown Sports Stadium as their main home venue from 2024 onwards it has become one of the highest activated stadiums in NSW and remains the only stadium in south west Sydney,” he said.
“To enhance the user and spectator experience we need government support.”
In a statement, a NSW Government spokesman said the government would consider the council’s proposal.
“The NSW Government considers proposals on a case-by-case basis and will review the business cases presented by Campbelltown City Council,” he said.
“The opportunity to increase women’s participation, create a home for women’s professional sport, with funding from all levels of government, made Leichhardt Oval a compelling proposal for the NSW Government.”
According to the council, the upgrade could also attract more major events to the site including FIFA, Asian Football Confederation, Socceroos and Matildas games.
