Wests Tigers fume over GWS Giants jersey

Yes they will play out of Homebush.

Why are we so sure that we will have a new strip in 2011\. Has it been confirmed by the club?

Suddenly a new contender for worst car sponsoring a major Australian sports team emerges…

I think we are still winning Yos.

Yeah probably. I only drove a Proton once to get the free jumper and that was enough. Never actually driven a Skoda but they look crap and have a reputation for being rubbish.

Game on!!

Wrong. They are playing out of the Showground at Homebush which will be known as Skoda Park (and 4 games in Canberra). The old Bulldogs ground that our state govt game them $45 million to upgrade capacity to 25,000.

From the Telecrap:

"In a massive night for GWS, they also announced Skoda as premier partner for three years and naming rights sponsor of the Sydney Showground field, which will be called Skoda Stadium in a deal worth in excess of $1.5 million a year ".

Blacktown is only their training facility

This crap makes me pissed off.

Its a crap name, and they're not even trying to differntiate themselves from their competitors!! Simply copying the colours of the most popular team of the region, of the opposing sport, is just plain pathetic. Next they'll be saying that anyone who wears black, gold and white are diehard GWS fans. And Giants, i just laugh. With all the tens of millions of dollars they're investing, the best their marketing team and all their market research could up with was the Giants!

Are they any hate sites on facebook which we can join to show how many people hate the concept of GWS and want them to fail miserably!

The club needs to have a close look at this, there may be some real issues in terms of what's called 'Passing Off'

Nothing would please me more than for some beak to find that this GWS troupe have sought advantage by either inferring an association with the Tigers or by seeking commercial advantage by use of the colours.

Time to have a serious chat with a good commercial law firm, although I'm sure Humphries already has

Slightly off topic, but Skoda are anything but rubbish. Take one for a drive, they're very well built and are more reliable than their big brothers VW and Audi.

As for the jersey colours, I'm not too fussed. I don't think they'll be poaching Wests Tigers fans.

To be fair to them, things seem to have picked up since they came part of VW. I don't like the look of them though and in a world of bad car names they seem to come up with some of the worst.

Still it might be fun to announce that you're off to test drive a yeti

Exactly. Hopefully the club are on the ball here!

its not a bad design - I don't mind it - much like the wests tigers jersey it stands out amongst the dreary striped variations we see from the melbourne clubs in the AFL

Teams like the tigers/raiders/melbourne in the nrl have striking designs which stand out, and if GWS is going for a stand out design compared to the other AFL teams - mission accomplished.

The AFL will pup millions into this franchise for the next 20 years. While they know there is very little chance of the Club being successful in the short term in relation to Fans and Support in an area which is well-known to be 'Tribal' towards Rugby League, there long term plan is about generation change which is 16-20 years down the track. It has started within the School-Based Programs, an expanded Junior Base will follow, leading to a strong Franchise within Rugby League Heartland.

Unless Rugby League in this country can start looking at the big picture, drive Junior Development across a greater area and expand/relocate to become a truely National Competition, AFL will rule the roost in NSW also!!!

It will take closer to two generations (30-40 years) to truly win the hearts and minds of the western Sydney public - but it is almost inevitable with the AFL's unlimited bucket of cash!

League will survive - but could be the poor relation in 30 years time!

They are hitting Queensland too. While they wont put a 2nd Franchise into Brisbane in the next 20 years, I'm certain we will see a franchise in Cairns before 2020… Pretty much all the traditional Rugby Schools in Qld have been over-run with AFL now!

Their schools program is extremely impressive - and they get in early with the 5 and 6 year olds!

That is where the cultural shift will commence - and will serve as the foundation from which the AFL reaps the long term rewards.

Even a staunch league town like Toowoomba (where I have family) is experiencing exactly what you refer to in their schools Watto - and they are hours from an AFL franchise!
