Wests Tigers fume over GWS Giants jersey

OMG… I just bought the new XR50 in a deep gold/orange... The first person who ask's me if I support GWS Giants I'm gona punch in the face!!!
:deadhorse:

Crikey Watto this is exactly the colour that the misses and I were going to trade our old XR6 in on :imp:

Total theft I would say. Strange how there are no AFL Team that wear green has their main colour minus the Fremantle Dockers who have a third of the jersey being green.

After they stole our colours, they might as well have taken our mascot.

Greater Western Sydney Tigers.

I hope they crash and burn, but I don't think its gonna happen.

The AFL will pup millions into this franchise for the next 20 years. While they know there is very little chance of the Club being successful in the short term in relation to Fans and Support in an area which is well-known to be 'Tribal' towards Rugby League, there long term plan is about generation change which is 16-20 years down the track. It has started within the School-Based Programs, an expanded Junior Base will follow, leading to a strong Franchise within Rugby League Heartland.

Unless Rugby League in this country can start looking at the big picture, drive Junior Development across a greater area and expand/relocate to become a truely National Competition, AFL will rule the roost in NSW also!!!

Well, if u can find me 2 or 3 boys with a polynesian background who'll play this ridiculous regional sport, I'll be very surprised. AFL is not anywhere near a fit with the culture. Thin white boys, by the score, but they're not the future of the NRL

NEW AFL club Greater Western Sydney Giants are "piggy-backing" on the success of the Wests Tigers into western Sydney's sporting landscape, the NRL club said yesterday. The Tigers were miffed that the new Sydney AFL franchise chose gold, white and a dark charcoal as their club colours - strikingly similar to the famous playing strip of Wests Tigers and previously Balmain Tigers.

For more than 100 years, the working-class Tigers have been black and gold.

GWS say their colours are orange and charcoal - with big-money recruit Israel Folau saying his club's new strip "looked great" - but there is no denying the jumper closely resembles Wests Tigers'.

"It's not a surprise, it was something we were anticipating," Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said. "We thought they would be colours they [GWS] could call their own from an AFL point of view. No one has orange in their code.

"We're already in the west and have a strong profile.

"I guess they have piggy-backed on us to some extent, not that they would admit that.

"But it's pretty convenient."

Balmain great Steve "Blocker" Roach said the Giants' playing strip wouldn't ensure on or off-field success.

"Good for them," said Roach, who played 185 games for Balmain. "I don't think it will make much of a difference. Generations of supporters have followed our game in Sydney's west. I don't think their colours will make much of a difference."

It is understood the gold/orange strip will only be worn for Sydney games. The Giants will don a NSW sky blue for all games played outside of Sydney.

That alone is an unusual decision made purely for marketing purposes.

Asked about his club's playing strip, Folau said: "I absolutely love it. I think it looks great. I'm so excited and cannot wait to get out there and wear it."

being the greater WS they should have taken the main colours from WT and penriff - black and the main colour from parra - blue –- so there colours would have been black and blue which they will be throughout the season ahead - they could also then have used the classic Chain anthem as their theme song - they just didn't put any thought in to it

Mods - The fact that we are giving them further exposure kills me.Please remove the images.I urge all to reject the all things related to this franchise.

   I nominate Spartan to be a MOD…

I Second that nomination Purely on the fact that I am a WT Nut and I'm breeding more..

We are only giving them free Media and insult to injury "on a NRL Fan Forum"… Reject the premiss that they are even a competitor I say. Its what we do in management. Make work harder.

I'm dying here guys.

As Moe from The Simpsons says "I'm choking on my own range here" - Look out anyone looking for any decisions today in the office...

Ummm… Israel Falou is Tongan?

I hear what you say, but Im telling you all, do not ignore this threat. If you do, AFL will be the dominant sport in Sydney!!!

AFL is like the Cain toad - It is spreading no matter what we do and killing off everything that was native and sacred.

If Syd falls then so will Bris…

Mate, they are doing an awesome job in Queensland. They have hit a little wall in Brisbane, but over time with there continuing dominace throughout the rest of the state, they will conquer Brisbane too.

Unless the QRL can stop bickering with the Clubs , we are sitting ducks also!!!

AFL has the money to keep this franchise running at a loss for decades. Their intention is not for it to be a walk up start profitable enterprise, but rather bring on a generational shift. The only possible loser in this for the AFL will be the Swans, with the Giants more than likely snaring a portion of their Western Sydney supporter base.

The only way the NRL can compete is to bring in the IC and make decisions for the betterment of the game, not for individual people or clubs. Compared to the AFL the NRL is run like a chook raffle.

There is no doubt the AFL will prop up this team for a very long time. About 40% of all television advertising spend is in the Sydney market even though Sydney has only about 20% of the total population. In terms of TV rights, Sydney is the golden goose and the AFL want/need it as it would dramatically increase the value of their product.

The big losers in this are the struggling Melbourne clubs - your North Melbourne's, Western Bulldogs etc who continue to struggle in terms of $'s and don't get the same level of support from the AFL that the GWS team will get.

I also think the AFL/GWS have made a big mistake basing themselves at Blacktown but playing at Homebush and 4 games in Canberra. I think they have underestimated the tribalism of Sydneysiders. It will not be an easy to task to convince the people of greater western sydney to travel to Homebush to support the team. Noone likes Homebush, and it is local to noone. The league and media will have a field day when they start drawing crowds of around 5,000 to 7,000 at the venue (it was only in the early 90's the Swans were drawing such crowds). IMHO, they would have been smarter to play out of Blacktown and try to build a supporter base there.

And, there is no certainty that the AFL's 2nd attempt on the Gold Coast will be successful either.

I don't think that they are whether they get any gate takings or not. They have spent so much on the team that they will do all they can to make it succeed. You watch, they will give away thousands of tickets to ensure that people are at their first half a dozen games just to give the impression that the team is a success. They have deep pockets.

And yes I feel sorry for the Melbourne clubs that struggle too. Richmond, Melbourne, North Melbourne, not only do they get less revenue but the new teams have the first choices in the draft and as such take the best new talent. How does Richmond build for success when they come at the bottom and cannot get the best kids.

But what do I care…....it is AFL after all!
