Wests Tigers in secret talks to lure Waratah Ryan Cross back to Rugby League

**WARATAHS centre Ryan Cross is in discussions to become the latest rugby union convert to return to the NRL after meeting Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens for coffee last Thursday.\
\
The Sunday Telegraph was tipped off about the pair being spotted on the cafe strip at Darling Street in Rozelle, and Cross and the Tigers have confirmed they are in the early stages of negotiations.**

A return to rugby league with Wests Tigers would continue the Concord club's strong father-son ties, with Cross's dad Paul a cult figure at Balmain during the late 1960s and early '70s.

An 18-Test Wallaby since switching to rugby union in 2007, Cross has spent the past 12 months playing outside centre for the NSW Waratahs after four seasons with the Western Force.

When contacted yesterday, the rugby union international confirmed he was thinking about a return to the NRL.

"I do still want to continue playing football - the body feels good," Cross said.

"Definitely rugby league has always been close to my heart and I've grown up with it. It was never really something that I considered I would go back to, but now that I've been back in Sydney for 12 months it's a big possibility.

**"Obviously, my dad played at the Tigers - and I was a supporter as a kid - so hopefully something can be worked out."**

Cross is also being pursued by rugby union clubs in the UK and France.

The Tigers have made no secret of their bid to overhaul their playing roster for next season, with Andrew Fifita, Bryce Gibbs and Tim Moltzen all headed elsewhere.

There have been continued rumblings of discontent within the playing group over the changes, particularly when lock Chris Heighington was told he may be forced to the interchange bench in 2012.

The Tigers announced the signature of Melbourne Storm's Kiwi international Adam Blair last Wednesday and have also signed Eels centre Joel Reddy and Penrith prop Matthew Bell.

**Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys confirmed coach Sheens had met Cross after his father Paul contacted the club.\
\
"As I understand it, it was an opportunity just to catch up and see where Ryan was at. I think he's always maintained his love for the game of rugby league," Humphreys said.\
\
"We are unsure as to whether there's an opportunity or not there for Ryan, but we're having a chat and we'll see what comes in the next few weeks.\
\
"His father Paul did play for Balmain many years ago and he rang me about Tim and Ryan having a chat."**

Cross played 143 first-grade games for the Sydney Roosters before his move to rugby.

His return would complete the merry-go-round of rugby union converts returning to the NRL after Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuqiri and Mat Rogers all came back.

Is this a sign that Sheens is planning on using Ayshford at lock next year? It might explain why he wants Heighington on the bench next year. God (And Sheens) know why 😕

Hmmm… Why get Reddy and Cross if you aren't going to be ditching Ryan, Brown and Daniela?

Ryan Cross would make a very handy fullback imo. He would have picked up a lot of skill under the high ball from Union.

Really hoping that we do not sign him to be honest. He's quite old and who knows how good he will be now after playing union for years. He'd just be either forcing Ayshford into the forwards or taking the spot of an exciting young back. Unfortunately from reading this article you get the feeling that he will be coming to the tigers..

he will probably be just a back up back liner im sure if we re sign utai he will be on the wing but if we dont it will go to either reddy or cross ( if we sign cross )

The only reason for signing Ryan Cross would be as a fullback option . He must be only doing this as he thinks Tedesco is a few years away yet . Hope we aren't planning on spending top dollar though . Wouldn't think he would come cheap .

Well guys you can't put an old head on young shoulders the value of having this type of player is expieriance you have a talented group of young guns you need some one they can learn from.Cross would be a good player to have around and certainly would add to our strenght good buy IMO.

It could only be $100-$120k a year or a largely incentive based contract. Punting a quarter of a mill on a guy that old and whose been away from the game for years is way too risky.

Ryan Cross ???? He was struggling BADLY in his last year in the NRL. He would be a very VERY poor purchase. So the $150k a year we save by releasing Fifita is going to go to Ryan CROSS !?!?!

What about developing Mullaney ??

This would only ever happen at WT.

One thing I do know is that whenever he played against the Tigers he almost always had a great game, often scoring a couple of tries.

He's class, and same age as Tuqiri when he joined the Tigers?

If we buy him I'm only happy for him to play fullback, (although I'd prefer brown), if not fb then I think we r covered, but wel see, if we got him cheap he could be good value

I don't see the point to be honest. If he's going to be a signing based on depth, then I'd prefer to blood Tim Simona, Limoni Kamuta and Faleula Finau.

Would be a good depth signing if he is cheap which I would assume he would be. Depends what we do with Brown and Utai if they resig we don't really need him if they don't he would be a good signing. Great under the high ball, strong, quick and has experience

They're not really secret talks…

I guess all this talk from Sheens about trying to upsize the forward pack next year also extends to the backs. He's said he doesn't want us to get outmuscled anymore and I guess that includes out wide. Ryan Cross & Joel Reddy are big boys, throw in Lawrence & Ayshford and possibly Mitch Brown or Matt Utai and thats a big backline. Simona, Kamuta & Finau are all great emerging talents, but Kamuta & Simona are no bigger than Benji.

I think Sheens may have already earmarked the likes of Koroibete, Tedesco, Finau and Nofoaluma for long first grade careers but wants to bring them along slowly and Cross & Reddy might be an option for a year or two until they are ready.

Who knows, we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out. I'll put my hand up, I initally turned my nose up at Matt Utai linking up with the club, but presently he and Lote when fit would be my two first choice wingers. I don't follow Union at all so Im not too sure how Cross is travelling atm, he might be a gamble.. but a 30 year old 165cm tall park footballer was also a gamble and has given us terrific value for money so far..

He was referring to the pack….but yes Ryan Cross will add size to our forwards.

..............So what is it about? For starters, coach Tim Sheens, along with his support staff, decided that he wanted a bigger, more aggressive pack. He won a competition in 2005 with a group of forwards which was, comparatively, quite lightweight. But he believes the game has changed since then. ''For us to be real contenders, not just one year but consistently, we need to be a bit bigger and stronger,'' Humphreys says. ''There have been instances where we have been out-muscled or out-wrestled, and the view is that we needed to address that...................

Dont know if its been posted already, but a decent enough Union highlight reel for anybody whos interested.. links up with Lote on a couple of occasions. Some of this vision is a few years old though.

Oh, and annoying U2 soundtrack accompanies the vision.. just thought I warn you.. might want to mute it
