Oh and gobbs Wests didnt forgo anything they were kicked out of the league then Balmain through them a lifeline.but yes the lower clubs were forced to merge or die.Not starting but just stating a fact.
Last time I checked, both Balmain and Western Suburbs had to forgo their history and tradition in the elite level. North Sydney and South Sydney were the only clubs to be expelled from the 2000 NRL Season with the Bears going into administration in the middle of the '99 season and the Rabbitohs were told they failed to make News Ltd.'s criteria. Western Suburbs were not kicked out, they opted for a Joint Venture arrangement to ensure the Football club survived well into the future and Rugby League in the South-West corridor of Sydney remained intact. 11 years on, both Balmain and Western Suburbs Football club's are alive and kicking thanks to one another. Just wanting to state a fact :wink:
