Wests Tigers on mission to convince

The Wests Tigers' two-game mission to convince the rugby league world - and, perhaps, themselves - they are the real deal begins with Friday night's NRL clash with Manly.

The inconsistent Tigers have two straight for the third time in 2011, but are yet to notch three consecutive victories this season.

Highly rated when the campaign kicked off, but ravaged by injury since, the Tigers take on premiership high-flyers the Sea Eagles and St George Illawarra in what could prove to be two season-defining weeks.

They head to Bluetongue Stadium in seventh position and desperate to cling on to their precarious place in the top eight.

"I'm not worrying about where we finish just yet, it's about finishing in the eight," coach Tim Sheens said on Thursday.

"Where we finish and what will be is six weeks away."

Should the Tigers make the finals, it's certain they will then be facing a crack at the title from the bottom half of the top eight.

Priority one may be clawing their way into the playoffs but Sheens said ensuring he has a healthy enough side to make the most of a September appearance would be priority two.

"You need to go in with a full complement of players," Sheens said.

"Our main aim is to try and build that over the next six weeks, try and get everyone fit and on the park and playing well.

"And at the same time win enough games to make sure we get there because there's a logjam where we are not far behind us.

"A side at eighth has beaten first a couple of times in recent years because the side at eighth comes in with a full complement of player and plays well enough.

"You just don't know those things six weeks out."

Second-placed Manly have won nine of their past 10 games and Sheens said they deserved to be spoken of in the same breath as competition favourites Melbourne and St George Illawarra.

A huge crowd is expected in Gosford with the match throwing the tasty match-ups between New Zealand team-mates Benji Marshall and Kieran Foran, and young halfbacks Robert Lui and Daly Cherry-Evans.

The Sea Eagles admitted this week that tensions still simmer between the silvertails and fibros after fireworks in recent clashes.

Sheens described the old rivalry as "long gone", despite taking his side to Wests old ground Lidcombe Oval a few seasons back to soak up the ambience.

"There's nothing like that used for today's team, that's long ago," he said.

"Those sorts of things are well and truly behind this club, let alone these players who've got no recollection of any of that sort of thing."

Manly have won six of the past eight games between the sides and have never scored less than 28 points in seven games at Bluetongue.

The Tigers have won three of their past four in Gosford.

This Wests Tigers side has too many pretty boys that dont like to spill blood in the side to trouble Manly. They will get bashed out of it.
They need ticker, heart, passion, aggression, fire, desire and will, if they are to match it.

Ryan - Played through with a split head
Utai - Played through with a broken arm
Ellis, Farah & Marshall - have all played through games with recurring injuries or coming back early from injuries
Fulton - has copped two concussions and stayed on the field
Gibbs - has been playing on a busted knee since last year
Lawrence - back 3 months after a hip injury

Don't tell me that the players aren't tough, don't spill blood or don't have ticker.

Tigerdale… its like your comment went from my mind through to your keyboard...

Sick of the haters... don't like the Tigers or the way they are run then look elsewhere!

i KNOW the tigers will show more ticker, heart, passion, aggression, fire, desire and will on the field, then you do from the couch.

is that acceptable?

They're all tough no doubt about it.
But Manly are a team that hands out the split heads and we're usually the team that receives them.
I hope we can reverse the equation , or run rings around them and wear them out.

bug i dont why you even follow the tigers as you Very rarely say anything positive at all. Why cant you ever say something that resembles a supporter. :astonished:

Couldn't agree more CB. Once again logic beats a random outburst.

I see where bug is coming from though. I think the boys are tough and try hard but we do get out-muscled a lot. To beat manly our forwards will really have to show true grit and make a lot more dominant tackles than we usually do.

Ok, how about PASSION, AGGRESSION, FIRE & DESIRE. Lets see if the boys can go out there and Rip the heads off the Manly scum. Because you just know that Watmough, Rose and Matai will cheat, bash and steal from us for 80 minutes.

I agree, but being outmuscled doesn't constitute as being gutless or not showing aggression or passion.

Manly players will do ANYTHING to win.

Our players dont usually go to those lengths.

most of the time, people see wests-tigers as good guys.

just for this game, if manly play dirty, do the same, to show wests-tigers can be either good or bad.

so if opponents want" to turn it on or get grubby" , wests-tigers will do exactly the same.

I see your point. We could probably do with a few mongrels tonight that we have had in the past…...guys like Senter, Shane Walker, and dare i even say it????????????Terry Hill.

But lets not underestimate what we do have. We may not have the niggle of the above mentioned players, but we do have:
1.One of the best go forward men in the game, Galloway
2.The best one on one hitter in the game, Lawrence
3.The best consistent aggressive hitter in the ghame, Ellis
4.The best defensive front rower in the game, Gibbs
5.The biggerst heart in the game, Heighnington

Hey King Sirro if you included John Hopoate and Craig Field we could of had a grub match not a grudge match .

I understood where you were coming from Bug, just thought the criticism of the players not wanting to spill blood or insinuating that they are princesses was a little harsh.

Just the same as you, I would like to see them mix it with Manly in terms of aggression (controlled aggression that is,) and pack hit some of their forwards to let them know they're not a pushover.

I liked your first one better … but rules is rules ...

I think the Tigers will get up tonight. They better, otherwise I'll have to suffer my brother-in-law gloating!!!
