Wests Tigers - Ownership / Voting Rights

I believe you still need to have been a continuous football club member at Balmain for three years to have voting rights (in order to stop blow-ins joining just to help a mate get on the Board)!

This was certainly the case when voting for the merger in 1999!

I qualified under the three year rule - but many fellow football club members didn't and were not even allowed to attend the vote - instead they were forced to await the outcome of the vote downstairs in the Leagues Club!!!

With the overall membership there is also the issue with kids being members, as legally they can't have persons under 18 being members of of either the leagues club or football clubs.

I quite honestly don't see the issue with how it is now. If you want to have a say in the club, join one of the two football clubs. A Wests Tigers 'Membership' is just a name for a season ticket with added benefits. The ownership model as it is now works, with the club being run fine, and getting closer and closer to a profit. Once this is achieved, the two owners won't be obliged to prop up the club with funds, and any profits stay with the club to assist in its running.

Why would you need to be 18 to join the football club?

That's right Red. Or 36 months as they put it (I'm sure there is some legal reason why 36 months is better than 3 years but anyway…). Also they only elect half the board each year now.

I was at the club upstairs in 1999\. I don't remember being locked out but I remember some members being put in another room and getting a CCTV feed.

So how do you go about getting a Balmain or Western Suburbs Football Club membership?

I always assume this was part of the leagues club membership.

Excuse my ignorance

I may be wrong about the lock-out in 99 yoss - but I recall non-voting members (including some mates of mine) being turned away to ensure voting members like myself could get access to the vote - this was probably due to the size of the crowd that attended!

Thanks for that will chase this up as I live in the area

Would be great if someone could post the wests link as well as I'm sure there will be a few willing to join up upon hearing this info

Why couldn't they include, members rights and benefits to all leagues clubs, but not the leagues club voting rights.

So essentially being a Wests Tigers member you would get you into all the leagues clubs, on game day or more.
That would save you having to line up & sign into the leagues club.

And in turn i'm sure Wests tigers could up that certain membership so they make a profit from it.

Thanks everyone for this.

I've been thinking along the same lines during the offseason of how to become a voting member of the football club(s) and this thread has answered all my questions in one go.

What a great forum we have!

A few reasons. Firstly the Leagues clubs are not the same as the football clubs. A lot of leagues club members probably don't care about league.

Secondly it probably wouldn't be legal. Signing-in is some archaic rule but it's the law. You can't just declare yourself open to anyone - they would need to come under one banner (like Panthers with their clubs).

Thirdly it wouldn't help much timewise. Anyone can be a WT member, even 17 year olds. So they'd end up IDing people anyway…

I think you're probably right. I do vaguely remember that. I thought you were saying voting members were being turned away. My memories of that night are the speeches (some great, some terrible, most full of emotion) and that weird feeling of wanting to do what was needed but feeling a bit sad having to do it.
