"Maguire also has Benji Marshall as a No.6 option in his farewell season, Madden and Talau are both Australian Schoolboys who have impressed this summer, **while there is also Tyson Gamble who debuted for the club last year.**"

I reckon Daley could really help Gamble.

He sure can .. I've had high hopes for this Gamble dude .. he certainly has the body size to be a good running 5/8 .. !! But just imagine having Daley coaching Jock Madden and Brooksie running the show out there … wow .. !!

Why does the myth about great players automatically making great coaches never die. Just because he was a great player doesn’t mean anything. Anyone remember Michael Maguire being a great player, or Trent Robinson? For all we know Glenn Air or Ben Kusto could guide our halves better.

True, but remember, he's not the head coach.

Those of you blokes that are bagging Daley are possibly the least qualified to do so. I'd suggest that to achieve as much as he has in the game, he knows a thing or two. If we want to win, we need experience and he has that by the bucket load. I mean really, we have a premiership winning coach and an origin winning halves coach with a bunch of young blokes that need guidance. I'd rather what we have than pretty much every other combination of coaching staff in the comp. This is what attracts top players. Get over yourselves.

In fairness, there's a bit of a difference between being a positional coach over team coach. There's so much more in the vein of head coaching that has to be considered, structure, game plans, roster etc, whereas someone like Daley is coming in to impart some wisdom in a position he was very much considered a great of the game in, at least certain in his generation.

Just because he struggled with origin, there's nothing to suggest that he wouldn't be a good voice to have whispering in the ear of your halves.

Amen.

I played against Daley coming through junior reps and into 23s. He carved me up every time and I wasn't even on the same planet. He was good alright.

But this doesn't transfer into coaching in any capacity. In fact, I think the bloke is well liked because he is a blokes bloke and always sides with the players, who get to muck up and do what they want. Bit like when your parents go out and your maniac uncle looks after you, let's you set fire to stuff, drive his car without a licence, sneak a sip of beer or scotch. You like him cause he lets you muck up.

He is not a professional or a man manger in the modern sense.

100% AGREEMENT.

Brilliant signing for the Tigers. As a specialist coach he has a lot to offer and as a player few showed such passion, strength, leadership, committment and a brilliant running and passing game - all the things Brooks needs to focus on to become his best

Anyone who doesen't understand what Laurie Daley brings doesen't remember him playing

There is a difference between being a brilliant player, which I don’t think is in dispute, and being able to articulate and pass on that knowledge. i.e. coach.

Tommy R comes to mind

Awful commentator and that clouds a few opinions. As a halves coach its a great step forward by the club.

× 2..

Terrible commentator. Wouldn't shut up. But he was a great 5/8 so I can only see upside in this. Good move.

Super player in his day and I actually like him as commentator, he sorya calls it half like an ex player and half as a fan and does give a go imo.
Madge probably thinks his go giving combined with skills knowledge not to mention big game experience will be useful for Brooks and Reynolds at least who need a little extra conference.

Doc we should just consider ourselves lucky that there are posters on this forum who know so much about everything. Experts on every topic.

I don’t know Daley, have never played with him or been coached by him but I would suggest that Maguire just may have had something to do with him and would be in a position to make an informed decision.

There are quite a few brilliant players that can’t coach to save thier life.

He didn't do a lot with NSW but he was up against some of the greatest generational players as well

As a player you couldn't doubt his passion and skill

The other advantage was he was a good centre as well , he will offer a lot to PM and Marsters

Time will tell

He'd be a better "Halves Coach" than a General Team coach.
Hate how he talks though… Says "PLAY" as "PUH-LAY!" Pet peeve. Really abruptly says some letters in words.

Can only seeing this being good for Luke.
Better than that glory days hero Andrew Johns.
His brother Matt would be good though.

Matt's a brain but far too full of himself.
I would almost take him in, but another part of me says avoid him. I can't put my finger on it but the DH culture seems a part of him like he could be around it and not notice it, maybe even foster it.

5 cracks for 1 series win is not great in a two horse race. In fact it is very mediocre.

That would be like a coach making the Top 8 once in 5 seasons and saying well he did a decent job !

However I quite like the move. Laurie has a failure as a Head Coach. However this motored role is totally different in a area where he should be able to help.

he is a highly respected figure in the game. Madge is known for his intensity. Laurie is probably more laid back. A good mix.

I dont see any real negatives to this.

I see it as a proactive move and it sends a good message that the club is not wallowing over recent less than positive events. Daley might not be well regarded with the punters but within the game itself it appears to be quite the opposite.

Daley is respected by the people that matter in the game ,if he does come on board for a minor role at the club this can only be positive ….every bit helps to build a team and the corporates like to rub
Shoulders with people of this caliber ,this appointment if it happens does have multiple levels to it our club is getting smart and not before time !
