Wests Tigers sign Rugby winger John Grant

Exactly, trouble catching is ridiculous, unless hes lost the ability to catch in the space of a few months.
I watched him play alot of Shute Shield and he was fine under the high ball and passing and kicking.
Some of you guys make it sound like only superstars can play NRL. Half the NRL cant catch or pass properly, so seriously lets see what next year brings for Grant.

I doubt he would have had much chance to demonstrate his ability under the high ball in Union

Grant would be training harder, longer and differently to anything he's ever done before- (athletics and R.U) - Big weights included. He would be wondering what the hell he's got himself into at the moment.

The finer skills like catching and passing are effected by severe fatigue and I'm guessing that's where he might be having trouble.

But as he settles in and gets fitter, he'll show the skills we have seen on YouTube. (I hope- because, gee he run!)

I will reserve judgement until I see him run out during the trials. He's got just under 2 weeks to go before Christmas break and will hopefully pick up the Tigers backline plays once ballwork starts in Jan. No doubt he's got some learning to do, but he's young and it's obviously a big step up from Shute Shield in terms of intensity which has probably been a big shock to him.

He's certainly not going to dislodge Tuqiri or Ryan while they're fit, so hopefully he adjusts to the pace of State Cup and we'll see how he develops from there. He's certainly showed enough of what he can do in broken play and when put into open space.

A State Cup backline could look like:

1\. Meaney
2\. Grant
3\. Simona
4\. Brown
5\. Matt Utai (or someone with pace)
6\. Chisholm
7\. Humble

Gee there are some harsh calls re Grant on here!!

From what ive seen of him he can catch/ pass and run pretty bloody well!!

With all the negativity being thrown around, you'd think we signed Matt Utai again or something…

oh wait....

Depends what you call harsh Simon

If by saying we don't think he will crack it in the NRL is harsh . Well I'm being harsh and will continue being harsh

The stocks of outside backs in Super 15 in Australia aren't big by any stretch of the imagination For him not to be picked up by any Franchise even as a back up sets off alarms to start with

Why no other NRL club seemed to be chasing him sets off another alarm bell

No European ,Japanese ,Italian or French rugby sides were chasing him especially seeing the chicken feed he will be on with the Tigers sets off more alarm bells

Everyone comparing games of Seven's rugby against Zimbabwe to the NRL is kidding themselves

As I have said previously players in this day and age do not go unnoticed in either code

For him to missed by all of these talent scouts there must be some reason I'm sorry

I hope i'm wrong but reality tells me otherwise

All im saying is…....peeps are way off with saying stuff like he cant pass oe catch........this is ridiculous at best!!

My main hopes with him are his size and pace!!! Which he has in abundance!! And we have lacked in both!!

If this is the case with rugby union players how then did we end up with Tuiaki.
Thats a gamble that paid off, let's hope it's two from two

I would like to think that Sheensy is a better judge of a footballer than most of us on this forum and he obviously thinks he can do something with him.
From what I've seen of him so far, I'm looking forward to his debut.

Black and White Tiger read what I said again .I'm not bagging rugby players at all
Tim Horan if he switched after the World Cup in my opinion would of been one of the greatest centres to play both codes

I'm just wondering why if he is as good as all the You Tube vision says he is why hasn't anyone else picked him up

Tuiaki had other options due to his size because he could play multiple positions and it is more likely not to be on the radars of talent scouts as he wasn't in Australia

Soon as he showed up on a radar he was signed (By us luckily)

"Tuiaki had other options due to his size".

What options?

Could he play wing and fullback? maybe halfback?

What the hell are you talking about?

The Australian Rugby selectors have done a great job in picking the Wallabies over the past couple of years haven't they?

Lote could not get a run. There were a lot of critics on this forum when we signed him. How did that work out?

Grant is about 6'6", can outrun just about everyone in the NRL, and judging by your MR. T. criteria, he should be able to play, wing, fullback, centre etc.

Let's just wait and see how he goes next year. I believe that he could be a sensation on one wing with the other young Fijian on the other (if Lote gets injured). You cannot beat speed in the NRL and with these two players, plus Benji, Lawrence, Miller, Moltzen, Lote etc, we have plenty of it.

PS. No one ever asked if Ken Irvine could catch a high ball or pass a football. He was a winger. A winger is the person in the team that finishes a try. Grant should be able to do that in spades.

Remember Tuiaki played 2nd row for us from time to time

Grant could not be used in the forwards as a battering ram Col

That is what the hell I'm talking about

I've never spoken about Lote and his signing as I wasn't a part of the Forum then

Your views on current wingers is outdated sorry Col Wingers these days have to be able to get us on a roll at the start of sets of six ,deal with the high ball , grubbers and chips as well as finish tries

The bomb was rarely used as an attacking weapon in Ken Irvines day (So I have been told from others ) John Peard was the one who began using the bomb as an attacking weapon

Can't beat speed can you? does Royston Lightning ring a bell? It takes a lot more then speed to cut in the NRL, otherwise by your logic Usain Bolt would be the greatest player of all time should he ever play league

I dont care if he cant do little drills, as long as he can run fast tackle hard and score trys he will do me, give the bloke a chance once he gets on the paddock then judge him. :bash :blah

There was no bigger fan of Mr T than myself. However, if you remember, he had a problem turning and chasing a ball that was kicked through. All I am saying is that what I have seen of Grant, (not just on you tube) he can catch a ball, high or low, can turn and chase with his acceleration, he is big enough to play in the forwards, he can tackle, and finish (leading try scorer in union last year). As stated earlier, he is also faster than anyone playing in the NRL at the moment. What more do you want?

Another PS. There is not a team in the NRL that would not have Ken Irvine in their team today before any other winger currently playing.

Good on you MagpieCol!!!!!! I had a mate named Col from some years ago that I have lost contact with who was an old magpie supporter! Now I'M A QUEENSLANDER!!!!!
GO YOU TIGERS!!!!!!

Didn't we have a tall winger a few years ago? Oh, that's right…he scored a try in the 2005 grand final! May be a wishful thinker like young Pollyanna, but I'm hoping for a repeat performer.
(P.S. Can't remember if Richards played any other position in FG, but I'm sure you'll let me know if he did)
BRING IT ON!!!!! :righton:

Col all of this doesn't answer one question I have continually raised with Grant is this

If he is such a great union player why did they hand him to rugby league on a platter for next to nothing ??
